Use Playwright to sign in once, save the resulting authenticated browser state, and load that state in the scheduled screenshot job. The recurring job can then navigate to the protected page and capture it without keeping a plaintext password in its screenshot script. The saved state is still sensitive: Playwright warns that it may contain cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate an account.
How the password-free workflow works
“Without saving passwords” means the recurring capture does not need to store or submit a plaintext password. It does not mean the job stores nothing sensitive: the browser state used to stay signed in can function like a credential.
- Authenticate with the website, using its browser login flow or a suitable supported authentication API.
- Confirm the site reached a signed-in state, such as a known destination URL or stable account element.
- Save the authenticated browser state to a protected file.
- In the scheduled run, create a browser context using that state, navigate to the target page, verify access, and take the screenshot.
- Protect both the state file and screenshot according to the sensitivity of the account and page.

Choose UI login or an authentication API
Use the UI when the browser flow matters
Automating the visible login flow is appropriate when you need to follow the site’s actual browser experience. It can also be necessary when the site does not offer a suitable supported API. Sign in, then wait for a reliable success signal instead of assuming that clicking a button completed authentication.

Use an API only when the site supports one
When the application provides an appropriate authentication API, Playwright’s guide describes making an API request and saving the resulting state for browser use. This can avoid brittle form interactions, but it is not a universal login endpoint: use only an endpoint supported by the target application and follow its authentication rules. Save and reuse Playwright state safely
In a Playwright project, the core pattern is to save storage state after a confirmed login, then supply it when creating the browser context for a later run:

Keep the generated file out of version control. For example, add the directory to .gitignore:
playwright/.auth/Playwright specifically cautions: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat it as a credential even when it contains no plaintext password. Capture only after confirming access
After loading the saved state, navigate to the protected page and verify that it is the expected signed-in page before saving an image. A stable URL or an account-specific locator can serve as the check. If the site redirected to login or the expected signed-in element is missing, fail the job rather than silently keeping a screenshot of the login screen.

Playwright’s Page screenshot API writes a file with page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }). Decide whether the job needs the current viewport or the entire page. The API also documents image format and scale settings, masking selected locators, and a stylesheet option for changing or hiding dynamic page content during capture. Schedule the capture in your environment
The browser automation script does not itself define when it runs. Configure your operating system, CI service, or hosting environment to invoke it on the desired schedule. Because the host is not specified, there is no single cron entry, workflow file, or secrets-provider setup that applies to every reader.

- Grant the scheduled process access only to the state file and output locations it needs.
- Keep passwords, tokens, and state contents out of job logs.
- Restrict screenshot storage and retention when captured pages contain private information.
- Use an appropriately limited account when the site’s permissions allow it.
- Have the job report authentication failure rather than treating an unexpected page as a successful capture.
These are deployment and security practices; the exact scheduler, access controls, and retention policy depend on where the job runs.

Plan for session expiry and login obstacles
Saved state can expire, so a scheduled job needs a way to notice when it no longer authenticates. Playwright’s guide notes that state may need to be deleted and regenerated. The refresh procedure depends on the site’s login policy: it may require a manual sign-in, an approved API flow, or other site-specific steps. Playwright authentication documentation
Unattended login is not guaranteed for every site. MFA, passkeys, bot controls, federated identity, session expiry, or the site’s terms may make automation harder or unsuitable. Playwright’s API reference includes virtual WebAuthn credentials in storage-state support, but that fact alone does not establish that a particular site’s passkey flow will work in a scheduled job. Troubleshoot failed scheduled captures
The screenshot shows the login page
The saved session may have expired, the context may not be loading the intended state file, or the login never completed before state was saved. Check the final URL and signed-in indicator; refresh the state through the site’s permitted flow, then rerun the capture.

The login step hangs or fails intermittently
Check whether the site introduced an MFA challenge, bot check, federated sign-in change, or revised UI. Do not assume a selector or login route remains stable. If the site supports an appropriate authentication API, consider that documented route; otherwise, determine whether unattended login is permitted and feasible.
The state file exists but does not restore access
A file’s presence does not prove it contains the authentication data this site requires. Confirm the login completed before saving, load the state into the new context, and check whether the application depends on storage beyond the state being reused. The image is blank, incomplete, or captures the wrong content
Verify the page is fully at the intended destination and that the capture method matches the need: viewport or full page. If the page populates content dynamically, wait for a reliable page-specific condition before taking the screenshot. The job works locally but not on its scheduled host
Check that the host can access the protected state file and write to the screenshot destination, and that the scheduled process invokes the intended script with the expected runtime configuration. The scheduler and its access-control setup vary by environment.
