VS Code tasks let you run a project’s existing build, test, and deployment commands from the editor. Define them in a workspace’s .vscode/tasks.json, then run each task on demand or combine tasks into a sequence. Tasks are command runners—not a replacement for project scripts, CI pipelines, or the Testing view’s test discovery and results.

What VS Code tasks can automate

A task tells VS Code which existing command to run and how to run it. You can use a shell task when the command needs shell features, or a process task to invoke a program with separate arguments. Tasks are configured for a workspace folder; they are not available when you have only a lone file open. See the VS Code task guide.

Keep the actual build, test, and deployment logic in the project’s scripts or command-line tools. A workspace task provides a convenient, repeatable way to invoke those commands without retyping them in the integrated terminal.

Create build, test, and deployment tasks

  1. Open the project folder or workspace in VS Code.
  2. Run “Terminal: Configure Tasks” from the Command Palette, then create or edit .vscode/tasks.json. VS Code can offer tasks contributed by extensions as well as custom tasks.
  3. Set each task’s command to an existing project command. The example below uses illustrative npm scripts; replace them with commands that actually exist in your project.
  4. Assign task groups if you want build or test tasks to appear in the corresponding VS Code workflows. A group can be made the default, so the Run Build Task command runs that task.
  5. Run and inspect each task in the integrated terminal before relying on it in a combined workflow.

Example .vscode/tasks.json:

{
  "version": "2.0.0",
  "tasks": [
    {
      "label": "Build",
      "type": "process",
      "command": "npm",
      "args": ["run", "build"],
      "group": { "kind": "build", "isDefault": true }
    },
    {
      "label": "Test",
      "type": "process",
      "command": "npm",
      "args": ["test"],
      "group": { "kind": "test", "isDefault": true }
    },
    {
      "label": "Deploy",
      "type": "process",
      "command": "npm",
      "args": ["run", "deploy"]
    },
    {
      "label": "Build, test, deploy",
      "dependsOrder": "sequence",
      "dependsOn": ["Build", "Test", "Deploy"]
    }
  ]
}

The commands are examples, not requirements for Node.js projects. Confirm that your project defines each script and that the deployment command targets the intended environment. The official guide documents the task structure and examples at Integrate with External Tools via Tasks.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Run the default build task

When a build task is marked as the default in the build group, use the Run Build Task command to launch it. The guide lists Shift+Command+B on macOS and Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows and Linux for its TypeScript example; keyboard shortcuts can be remapped, so check your VS Code Keyboard Shortcuts if those keys do something different.

Run tasks in parallel or in order

A compound task uses dependsOn to invoke other tasks. If it lists multiple dependencies, VS Code runs them in parallel by default. That is useful when the commands are independent, but it is unsafe for a workflow in which tests require a completed build or deployment must follow successful tests.

Set "dependsOrder": "sequence" when the listed dependencies must run one after another. In the example, Build runs before Test, which runs before Deploy. Review the underlying commands and their failure behavior; task sequencing does not itself define a release policy or guarantee that a deployment is appropriate.

If a dependency is a long-running background task, sequential execution needs a problem matcher that lets VS Code detect when that task has completed. Without completion detection, VS Code cannot reliably know when to start the next step. Dependency and background-task behavior is described in the task guide.

Use tasks for test commands—not test discovery

A task in the test group can run your project’s test command, but running that command does not automatically populate VS Code’s Testing view. The Testing view and testing extensions provide integrated test discovery, per-test operations, and results. Use a task when you want to invoke a repeatable command; use the testing integration when you need those interactive test features. See the VS Code Testing documentation.

Use variables to make tasks reusable

VS Code supports variables such as ${workspaceFolder} and ${file}, along with input variables that prompt for a value. Add them when a task needs to work with different workspace paths or user-supplied input instead of hard-coding a value.

Handle automatic tasks and workspace trust carefully

Tasks normally run when a user launches them. A task can be configured with "runOn": "folderOpen" to run when a folder opens, but automatic tasks are controlled by the task.allowAutomaticTasks setting, which is off by default according to the VS Code task documentation. Automatic tasks do not run in an untrusted workspace.

Task definitions are files in the workspace and may be committed to the repository, so a task can run commands written by someone else. VS Code’s Restricted Mode prompts about trust before tasks are run or enumerated. Review .vscode/tasks.json before running tasks in an unfamiliar project, and consult the Workspace Trust documentation to understand trust behavior.

Use deployment tasks with deliberate safeguards

VS Code can invoke a project’s documented deployment script or provider CLI, but a task file does not make a deployment safe or define how a provider handles credentials. Confirm the deployment target and authorization process using your project and provider’s authoritative guidance. Do not put credentials in a shared task file; use the credential-handling approach prescribed for your deployment environment.

Keep deployment as a separate, clearly labeled task unless your team has an explicit reason to include it in a build-test-deploy sequence. A task can automate the command, but it cannot determine whether production is the correct target or whether a release is approved.
