Advanced Scene Switcher can automate OBS tasks using macros: conditions trigger actions such as changing scenes or starting and stopping a stream. It can schedule actions and react to scene or media behavior, but a macro schedule is not a guarantee that OBS will restart after a reboot or recover from every network, encoder, power, or platform failure. Build and test the full workflow before relying on it unattended.
What Advanced Scene Switcher can—and cannot—automate
Advanced Scene Switcher is an OBS plugin that pairs conditions with actions in macros. Its capabilities include date and time conditions, streaming-related conditions and actions, media and scene behavior, and a Macro Schedule tab for scheduling actions. You can use these pieces to arrange a planned start, scene changes, timed actions, or shutdown behavior, depending on how you configure the macros.
Scheduling an action is not the same as keeping an entire broadcast available 24/7. The plugin documentation does not establish that a schedule will launch OBS after a computer reboot or restore a stream after every failure. Treat automation as a sequence to validate—not as an uptime guarantee.
Check compatibility and back up OBS settings
The OBS Resources listing currently identifies Advanced Scene Switcher 1.36.1 and a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1; it lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Compatibility is version-sensitive, so check the listing and release information for the version you intend to install. The release notes recommend backing up settings before changes.

- Confirm your installed OBS version meets the plugin’s stated minimum.
- Back up your OBS and plugin settings before installing or changing the configuration.
- Review the current plugin release notes and issue information, especially if the setup will be left unattended.
Prepare OBS before building macros
Set up the stream and the scenes you want automation to control before adding triggers. In OBS, select the streaming service and server and enter the stream key supplied by that service. OBS notes that the appropriate stream bitrate depends on your upload speed and the service’s limits; there is no single bitrate in the available guidance that applies to every service or connection.
- Configure the stream: In OBS, open Settings and configure the stream service/server and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Build your scenes: Add and check the scenes and sources the macros will switch between. Confirm each scene works as intended without automation.
- Check performance: Test your settings and stream smoothness before going live, as OBS recommends. Resolve issues with sources or performance before adding more automation variables.
Create a macro for the action you need
Start with one clear trigger and the action that should follow it. The plugin’s Macro Schedule can schedule an action for a chosen date or time. For event-driven behavior, choose a condition—such as a relevant scene, media, or streaming condition—and pair it with the appropriate action. Exact field names and options can vary by installed version, so use the plugin’s current help and interface rather than assuming an older walkthrough matches your setup.

- Open Advanced Scene Switcher in OBS and create a macro.
- Add the condition that represents the event you want to respond to, or use Macro Schedule for a planned date/time action.
- Add only the action or actions that should happen when that condition is met.
- Review the macro’s repeat or condition-change behavior in the installed version. Configure it deliberately so that repeated evaluations do not trigger an unwanted action.
- Test the macro manually or in a controlled session before depending on it during a live broadcast.
For a scheduled start, transition, or shutdown
Use a time-based condition or the scheduled macro feature for the planned action, then configure the corresponding OBS action. A start time on a schedule should not be mistaken for proof that OBS itself will start if the computer is off or has rebooted.
For a finite video or audio item
A community forum example describes configuring a media source to switch to another scene at the end, then using a scene trigger to stop the stream. This is a configuration pattern, not an official reliability guarantee or a current-version step-by-step recipe. Test how your media source, scene transition, and stop action interact before using it unattended.

Test the complete unattended sequence
OBS recommends testing settings, scenes, and stream smoothness before a first live stream. For a 24/7 workflow, test the whole chain—not only whether a macro appears to fire.
- Confirm the scheduled or event-based trigger occurs at the intended time or state.
- Check every scene transition, source, and media-completion behavior.
- Verify the intended stream start and stop actions in a controlled session.
- Test the reconnection and failure cases that matter to your setup, such as a network interruption, and observe what actually happens. Do not assume the plugin guarantees recovery.
- After plugin or OBS updates, recheck the sequence; version changes can affect compatibility or behavior.
WebSocket is optional for remote control
OBS WebSocket is built into OBS Studio 28 and later. It can support remote control through compatible clients, but external clients are not required for local macro scheduling. If you enable or use the interface, OBS highly recommends protecting it with a password against unauthorized control. Do not expose a controllable OBS connection without appropriate security.
