To auto-start an FFmpeg stream when a Raspberry Pi boots, first confirm that your FFmpeg command works interactively, then run that command from a systemd service configured to start at boot. Keep the YouTube stream key private, account for delayed or unavailable networking, and use YouTube’s current Live Control Room settings for the channel rather than copying old encoder values.
What you need before configuring systemd
- A Raspberry Pi with an operating system installed on boot media. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation covers the basic setup and headless options.
- A working FFmpeg installation and a known input: for example, a media file, network stream, or capture device. FFmpeg accepts these input types and writes output to a destination URL, as described in its command-line documentation.
- A YouTube live stream configured in YouTube Live Control Room, including the current ingest server and stream key for that stream.
- A network connection that reaches the internet. A service can be ordered after boot networking, but that does not guarantee DNS, an internet route, or YouTube is reachable when FFmpeg starts.
Choose the Pi model and camera or capture setup based on the input, resolution, and encoding workload you intend to run. No particular Pi model or camera stack is guaranteed by this procedure; the available camera input paths vary by hardware and operating-system image.
Make the FFmpeg command work before automating it
Run FFmpeg from a terminal using the same account that will run the service. Confirm the input device or file, audio and video mapping, FFmpeg binary path, output URL, and YouTube reception before introducing systemd. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP and RTMPS variants and shows the general pattern of sending an RTMP stream as FLV output.
Use the ingest URL and encoder requirements shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room or current official YouTube encoder documentation. This article does not prescribe universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, or ingest protocol values: the appropriate values depend on the channel’s current YouTube instructions and the source and encoding capability of the Pi. Do not treat parameters in older Raspberry Pi camera examples as current recommendations.

Keep the real stream key out of public repositories, screenshots, and logs. Raspberry Pi Foundation’s historical camera example warns, “Keep your key secret and don’t share it online.” Treat the key as a credential and restrict access to any file or service configuration that contains it.
Create a protected configuration and wrapper
A wrapper script keeps the systemd unit readable and lets you test the exact launch command under the service account. Replace the illustrative paths and placeholder values below with your own. Do not put a real key in a public script or publish this example unchanged.

#!/bin/sh

# Replace with the actual input and current YouTube ingest URL/key.
exec /usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/input
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is only a structural example: stream copy works only when the input codecs, timing, and format are suitable for the output. If they are not, configure transcoding using settings appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current requirements. FFmpeg’s RTMP-to-FLV example explains the output pattern, not a guarantee that every source can be copied unchanged.
Save the wrapper somewhere accessible to the service account, such as /usr/local/bin/youtube-stream.sh, and make it executable. Store secrets in a file or environment source with permissions restricted to the service account, rather than embedding a real key in a world-readable unit. If you use a shell wrapper, quote arguments safely and ensure it has a valid interpreter line. Adapt the example so the secret is read securely; do not echo it or print it to logs.

Define a systemd service that starts at boot
Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service with a unit along these lines. Replace the account, paths, and dependencies to match the Pi’s operating system and network manager.
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=YOUR_SERVICE_USER
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/working-directory
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/youtube-stream.sh
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
network-online.target is useful only if the operating system’s network manager provides and manages that target. After= establishes ordering; it cannot prove that external DNS, the internet route, or YouTube is ready. Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation describes wireless setup and an option to wait for a network connection during boot. Even with that option, retain a sensible restart policy and check the journal when the connection or remote endpoint is unavailable.

Select restart behavior for the workload. Restart=on-failure restarts a process that exits unsuccessfully, but it cannot fix a bad key, unsupported encoder, missing camera, or persistent network failure. Validate the service syntax on the Pi’s installed systemd version and confirm the configured user can access the input and protected key source.
Enable, start, and inspect the service
- Reload unit definitions after creating or editing the file:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable startup at boot:
sudo systemctl enable youtube-stream.service. - Start it now to verify the service path:
sudo systemctl start youtube-stream.service. - Check its current state and recent messages:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service. - Read the service journal for FFmpeg or input errors:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service. Add-fto follow new messages while diagnosing a live start. - After correcting a configuration problem, restart the service with
sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service, then check status and YouTube Live Control Room reception again.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not start or stay live
- It works in a terminal but fails as a service: systemd runs as the configured
User, with its own working directory and permissions. Verify that account can read the input and secret source, access the capture device, and execute the wrapper and FFmpeg binary. Check the journal for the first error. - The service starts before the network is usable: confirm the OS network manager supports
network-online.targetand that its wait-online mechanism is active. Ordering alone does not establish internet or YouTube reachability; use restart behavior and inspect connection failures. - YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the ingest URL and key match the current stream in Live Control Room, and verify the output protocol and format against YouTube’s current instructions. Never paste the key into a public issue or log while troubleshooting.
- FFmpeg exits on an input error: check the file path or capture-device path, permissions, and the camera stack supported by the installed OS image. Raspberry Pi camera software and input paths differ across hardware and OS versions.
- The process repeatedly restarts: read
journalctl -u youtube-stream.serviceto identify the exit cause. A restart policy can retry an exited process; it will not resolve a persistent bad configuration, unavailable input, invalid key, or unreachable endpoint. - There is no useful journal output: verify the unit’s
ExecStartpath, wrapper executable bit, interpreter line, and unit syntax, then runsudo systemctl daemon-reloadand inspect service status again.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s older camera-to-YouTube example illustrates the camera-to-RTMP workflow, but its SysV init.d and update-rc.d startup instructions are historical and should not replace a current systemd service.
