1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun FFmpeg as the main process of a systemd service and set Restart=on-failure with a restart delay. That lets systemd restart FFmpeg after a qualifying failure or crash. For transient RTMP output errors, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can also retry the output connection. Neither layer alone detects every case where FFmpeg stays running but YouTube receives a stalled or unhealthy stream, so verify stream health separately.
Choose the recovery layer for the failure
Systemd and FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer address different failure modes. A service restart is for a process that exits; FIFO recovery can retry some output errors without restarting FFmpeg. A process that remains alive while the stream is frozen needs an end-to-end health check.
| What failed | Recovery approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits with an error or is terminated by a qualifying signal | systemd with Restart=on-failure |
Service status and journal |
| RTMP output encounters a recoverable connection error while FFmpeg remains alive | FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery options may retry the output | FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s received-stream health |
| FFmpeg remains alive but the feed is stalled or unhealthy | An end-to-end check or purpose-built watchdog is needed | YouTube Live Control Room and the actual event |
Systemd’s restart behavior does not restart a service after an explicit systemctl stop. Its documentation describes restart conditions and service-process behavior; it does not prescribe distribution-specific installation steps. systemd.service manual
Run FFmpeg under systemd
1. Create a service unit
Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. Replace the example command with your existing FFmpeg command, including its input and YouTube ingest destination. Keep FFmpeg itself as the process started by ExecStart; a wrapper script that exits separately can make it harder for systemd to supervise FFmpeg’s actual process.

This is a starting-point unit, not a complete streaming command for every input. Confirm the FFmpeg path, input, codecs, output URL, and key for your setup. The five-second delay is an example to tune: a pause avoids an immediate restart loop, while a longer delay may be appropriate if the host or network needs time to recover.
Do not publish a real stream key in a shared unit file, screenshot, or command transcript. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to the associated stream. YouTube says a compromised key can be reset in Live Control Room, after which the encoder must be updated. Manage live stream settings

2. Load, enable, and start the service
- Ask systemd to load the new or changed unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service. - Check whether systemd considers it active:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service. - Read recent service output:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new messages while diagnosing, usesudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f.
After configuring the service, test the restart behavior deliberately in a safe test stream: stop the FFmpeg process in a way that causes failure, then confirm the service becomes active again and that YouTube receives the feed. Do not use systemctl stop youtube-stream.service as the failure test: an explicit stop is intentional and is not restarted under the documented restart semantics. systemd.service manual
3. Decide whether clean exits should restart
Restart=on-failure is generally the appropriate choice when a clean FFmpeg exit should mean the stream is finished. It covers nonzero exits, qualifying signals, timeouts, and watchdog expiry. Use Restart=always only when you also want a successful, clean exit to start another run. An intentional systemctl stop is not restarted by either setting. systemd.service manual

Retry transient RTMP output errors with FFmpeg
If FFmpeg stays alive but its output connection encounters transient errors, the FIFO muxer can attempt output recovery. FFmpeg’s manual shows RTMP recovery options including -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. In a typical output path, the relevant pattern is:
-f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
Integrate those options into the output portion of your existing command rather than treating this as a full replacement command. Exact placement depends on the command and FFmpeg build. FFmpeg documents max_recovery_attempts as defaulting to 0, meaning unlimited attempts; choose a limit if indefinite retries are not suitable for your operation. FIFO recovery handles the muxer/output path, not a process that has already exited, and it does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. FFmpeg documentation: FIFO muxer

Match the YouTube ingest settings and verify the event
In YouTube Studio, confirm the current stream URL, key, and ingest protocol for the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises testing with audio and video similar to the planned stream before going live. Check the received-stream health and verify that the event is accessible; an active systemd service is not proof that viewers can see a healthy stream. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube streaming tips
- Video: Use a supported codec and settings for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for streaming.
- Audio: For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio options.
- Network: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Connectivity interruptions can still break a stream, so use a stable route to the ingest server.
- Host resources: Watch CPU, memory, and network use on the Vultr VPS while streaming. Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu streaming-server guide is built around OBS, not an FFmpeg requirement; in that OBS scenario it warns that high CPU can cause dropped frames and buffering, and suggests lowering resolution or moving to a plan with more vCPUs. Treat its below-90% CPU advice as specific to that scenario, not a universal FFmpeg threshold. Vultr guide
Troubleshoot restarts and unhealthy streams
The service is failed and does not restart
- Check
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandsudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pagerfor the exit reason. - Confirm the unit has
Restart=on-failure, then reload after edits withsudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Check that
ExecStartpoints to the actual FFmpeg binary and that its input and output arguments are valid. - Remember that an explicit service stop is not a failure and will not trigger a restart.
FFmpeg runs, but YouTube reports no signal or a broken feed
- Check the FFmpeg output logs and the stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room; systemd only reports process supervision, not successful delivery to YouTube.
- Verify the event’s current ingest URL and stream key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the service configuration.
- Check whether the RTMP path is suffering transient errors; FIFO recovery may help with those output errors, but it cannot confirm that the stream is playable.
- Compare the outgoing protocol, video, audio, keyframe interval, and bitrate behavior with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
The stream reconnects but keeps dropping frames or buffering
- Check outbound bandwidth against the total stream bitrate and leave the headroom YouTube recommends.
- Inspect VPS CPU and other resource use during the stream. If the host is overloaded, reduce resolution or encoding workload, or consider a VPS with more vCPUs.
- Test the network route and stream with representative media before relying on it for an event; repeated process restarts will not fix an undersized host or unstable connection.
Or let it run in the cloud

Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
