To take photos through binoculars, focus the binoculars first, clamp a compatible phone adapter to one eyepiece, then center the phone’s active camera over that eyepiece while watching the camera preview. Tighten the alignment control only after the optical view is centered, and refocus the binoculars if needed.
How do I attach my phone to binoculars?
- Focus the binoculars first. Look through them and adjust until the scene is sharp before adding the phone. Celestron’s 81035 adapter manual, dated September 2024, recommends this sequence.
- Clamp the adapter to one eyepiece. Open its eyepiece clamp, position it around the eyepiece, and tighten it securely. Avoid a section of the barrel that rotates freely. With Celestron model 81035, lower the binocular eyecup before fitting the clamp; other adapters may differ.
- Secure the phone in the holder. Seat it flat and make sure the case does not stop it from sitting correctly. Celestron says raised grips, stands, rings, and folio-style cases can interfere with the holder on model 81035. Check the instructions for your specific adapter.
- Open the camera preview and align the phone. Loosen the alignment control, then move the phone until its camera is over the eyepiece and the preview shows the binocular view. Tighten the control once the view is centered.
- Check which camera lens the phone is using. ZEISS advises using the main camera; on most phones, the 1x setting indicates it. Some phones may switch lenses automatically. ZEISS recommends closing and restarting the camera app with the adapter mounted; disabling a focus enhancer may also help on some phones. See the ZEISS digiscoping adapter instructions.
- Refocus through the binoculars. Adjust the binoculars again if the image in the preview is not sharp after alignment.
How do I line up my phone camera with the binocular eyepiece?
Use the live camera preview rather than relying on how the phone looks from the side. Move the phone in the adapter until the eyepiece’s circular image fills the preview as evenly as possible, then lock the alignment. The phone’s active camera—not just the phone’s center—needs to sit over the eyepiece. If the preview shows only a small portion of the scene or appears dark, reposition the phone and center the optical image before tightening the adjustment.
Check adapter and phone fit before buying
Adapters are not guaranteed to fit every binocular and phone. Measure or verify the eyepiece diameter, check the phone’s dimensions and camera position, and compare them with the exact adapter’s fit limits. For one concrete example, Celestron lists a 29–45 mm eyepiece diameter range for its Smartphone Adapter DX Kit and says it works with binoculars. That range applies to this product, not all adapters.
Also check clamp style and whether the phone holder clears your case. An adjustable alignment control is useful for centering the active camera. If comparing products, consider whether the design offers fine adjustment and a safety tether; ZEISS describes a safety cord for its eyepiece adapter system. Follow the specific product’s handling instructions, since mounting systems differ.

Why are my photos through binoculars blurry or dark?
- The image is soft: Confirm that the binocular view is sharp on its own, then refocus the binoculars after attaching and aligning the phone.
- The preview is dark or shows only part of the view: The phone camera may not be centered over the eyepiece. Adjust its position while watching the preview, then tighten the alignment control.
- The phone is using an unexpected lens: Switch to the main camera if available. If the phone switches automatically, close and restart the camera app with the adapter mounted. On some phones, turning off a focus enhancer may help.
- The adapter will not sit securely: Check eyecup position, clamp placement, eyepiece diameter, phone orientation, and case clearance against the adapter manual. For Celestron model 81035, the clamp should grip a non-rotating part of the eyepiece barrel, and raised case features may prevent the phone from sitting flat.
Remove the adapter before carrying the binoculars
Celestron warns that carrying binoculars with its phone adapter attached can knock it loose and damage the phone. Remove the adapter for transport, and follow the carrying guidance in your own model’s manual.
