How long can the Vedanta rally continue? There is no fixed expiry date. The rally is defensible only while commodity support is joined by higher volumes, lower unit costs, reliable project execution, controlled leverage and capital allocation that does not overdraw cash flow. Vedanta’s FY2025-26 results provide a strong starting point, but a substantial part of the earnings improvement came from market factors that can reverse.
What the FY2025-26 numbers actually prove
Vedanta Limited reported record FY2025-26 revenue of ₹1,74,075 crore, EBITDA of ₹55,976 crore and profit after tax (PAT) of ₹25,096 crore. Net Debt/EBITDA was 0.95x at 31 March 2026. These figures show that the company entered the rally with stronger reported earnings and a lower net-leverage ratio than a business carrying more than one year of EBITDA in net debt.
They do not, by themselves, prove that the same earnings can be repeated. The finance review attributes ₹10,984 crore of the EBITDA increase to market factors, including stronger commodity prices, rupee depreciation and favourable input prices. Those factors can lift profit without a permanent improvement in productive capacity. The first question for a shareholder is therefore not “Did EBITDA rise?” but “How much of EBITDA would remain if commodity prices and currency conditions moved back toward normal?”

Management also states: “The commodity markets have always been cyclical.” That qualification should sit beside every projection based on the latest quarter or financial year.
Test 1: Separate commodity beta from operating improvement
Vedanta’s businesses do not respond identically to a change in one commodity. Track the relevant price, Vedanta’s realised price, sales volume, cash cost, by-product contribution and product mix for each segment. A rally supported by volumes and costs is more durable than one explained mainly by spot prices.

Aluminium
Aluminium generated FY2025-26 EBITDA of ₹25,502 crore, the largest contribution among the disclosed segments. Examine whether production and sales volumes are increasing, whether power and raw-material costs are falling per tonne, and whether value-added products are improving realised prices. A higher aluminium price can expand margins quickly; a cost reduction or capacity ramp can continue to help after the price cycle turns.
Zinc and silver
The zinc segment contributed ₹23,377 crore of EBITDA in FY2025-26. Because zinc operations can also produce silver, review the mix of zinc and silver revenue rather than treating the segment as a single-price exposure. Check mined and refined volumes, grades, treatment and refining costs, and the share of earnings attributable to silver prices. A strong silver contribution can amplify results, but it also makes the segment’s earnings more sensitive to another volatile market.

Oil and gas
Oil and gas contributed ₹4,350 crore of EBITDA. Follow realised crude prices, production volumes, lifting costs, royalties and any changes in the production profile. Oil earnings can provide diversification from metals, but they remain exposed to commodity prices and operational interruptions.
Use a bridge, not a headline percentage
For each reporting period, build a simple EBITDA bridge with five lines:

- Currency: the effect of rupee depreciation or appreciation on export-linked revenue and costs.
- Volume: tonnes or barrels sold versus the prior period.
- Cost: energy, raw materials, freight, labour and other unit-cost movements.
- Mix and one-offs: value-added products, by-products, hedges or non-recurring items.
Label the price and currency lines as market-sensitive and the volume and cost lines as execution-sensitive. If the market-sensitive lines explain most of the increase, use a lower normalised earnings base when judging the share price.
Test 2: Check balance-sheet resilience beyond the 0.95x ratio
Vedanta reported gross debt of ₹81,740 crore, net debt of ₹53,254 crore and cash and cash equivalents of ₹28,485 crore at 31 March 2026. Net Debt/EBITDA was 0.95x. The ratio is encouraging, but it depends on the EBITDA denominator and on how quickly cash can be used to meet obligations.
Questions to answer in every filing
- What portion of gross debt matures in the next 12, 24 and 36 months?
- How much cash is freely available at the operating companies, and how much is restricted or needed for working capital?
- What are the average interest rates and the mix of fixed and floating-rate debt?
- How much interest expense is covered by operating cash flow under lower commodity prices?
- Are dividends, capital expenditure and debt repayments being funded from recurring free cash flow or from new borrowing?
Parent-company debt and refinancing matter even when the listed operating company reports a comfortable ratio. A refinancing at a higher rate, a weaker credit rating or a delay in moving cash between entities can change equity risk perception before it appears in annual EBITDA. Review exchange filings for maturities, guarantees, stake sales, inter-company transactions and rating actions rather than relying on the headline leverage ratio alone.

Stress-test leverage
Run at least three internal cases. In the downside case, reduce commodity prices and EBITDA while leaving scheduled debt payments unchanged. Recalculate Net Debt/EBITDA, interest coverage and available cash. If a modest earnings decline pushes leverage sharply higher, the rally has a narrow margin of safety even if the latest reported ratio is below 1x.

Test 3: Decide whether dividends and growth capex can coexist
Vedanta declared ₹34 per share of FY2025-26 dividends. It also outlined FY2026-27 growth capital expenditure of ₹17,000–19,000 crore. Both are substantial claims on cash flow: dividends return cash to shareholders, while growth capex is intended to create future capacity and earnings.
Do not treat the dividend as an automatic measure of earnings quality. Compare the cash dividend with free cash flow after maintenance capex, interest, taxes and working-capital movements. A payout can be attractive in a strong commodity year but less sustainable if prices fall while the company is committed to projects.
Evaluate each capex project on its own economics
- Identify the capacity being added, its expected commissioning date and the segment it serves.
- Check whether the project depends on external power, imported inputs, new approvals or a particular commodity price.
- Compare expected incremental EBITDA with the capital required and the time to reach designed utilisation.
- Track spending against the ₹17,000–19,000 crore FY2026-27 plan and note slippage or overruns.
- Ask whether management would slow discretionary spending if free cash flow weakens.
Capital allocation strengthens the rally when growth projects are completed on time, raise volumes or lower costs and are funded without a damaging increase in debt. It weakens the case when high dividends and aggressive expansion require repeated refinancing during a down-cycle.
Test 4: Look for execution-led catalysts
Commodity prices are outside management’s control; execution is not. The following indicators can make a rally less dependent on a favourable market:

Volume growth
Check quarterly production and sales against installed capacity and prior periods. Rising volumes with stable or falling unit costs indicate operating leverage that can persist after a price spike fades. A price-led revenue increase without volume growth deserves a lower quality score.
Cost reduction
Track energy intensity, raw-material consumption, freight, employee costs and other cash costs per tonne or barrel. Separate structural savings from temporary input-price benefits. The latter can disappear when energy or materials markets turn.
New aluminium and power capacity
Capacity additions can support future earnings, but only after commissioning and ramp-up. Monitor construction progress, testing, commercial production, utilisation and the cost of supplying power. Delays defer the expected benefit while interest and committed spending continue.
Demerger and pure-play structure
A demerger or a more pure-play structure could make individual businesses easier for investors to value. Treat it as a catalyst only when there is a documented timetable, regulatory progress, clear liabilities and an explanation of how debt and cash will be allocated. Announced intent is not the same as completed separation.

Stake sales and debt actions
Asset sales, stake sales or refinancing can reduce debt, but their effect depends on price, timing and the assets sold. Read the exchange filing for proceeds, use of funds, retained ownership and any change to future earnings before assigning a positive value to the announcement.

Build bull, base and bear cases instead of copying a target price
A broker target is an opinion based on assumptions, not a forecast certainty. Citi and Kotak Securities were cited in an external market report, which also warned about debt and metal-price volatility. Build your own range by changing the assumptions that matter most.

Use the same debt, capex and share-count assumptions across cases where possible. The purpose is to see how much of today’s price requires the bull case. If the valuation works only with high commodity prices and flawless execution, the downside is asymmetric.
Test 5: Value the share on normalised earnings
Start with the market price on the date of your analysis and calculate the implied enterprise value and equity value using the latest reported debt and cash. Then replace FY2025-26 EBITDA with a normalised figure from your base case. This prevents a one-year commodity windfall from setting the valuation anchor.
Useful valuation checks
- Compare enterprise value/EBITDA under bull, base and bear EBITDA, not only the reported ₹55,976 crore.
- Compare the implied equity value after gross debt, cash and other relevant claims.
- Test the dividend yield using a sustainable payout rather than assuming ₹34 per share repeats every year.
- Check whether growth capex increases future cash flow or merely replaces declining production.
- Apply a discount for parent refinancing risk, execution uncertainty and commodity volatility where those risks are material.
Do not infer safety from a low multiple calculated on peak earnings. A lower multiple can be misleading if EBITDA falls faster than the share price.
A repeatable monitoring routine for shareholders
Use a fixed process after every quarterly result, annual report and material exchange filing:
- Record the operating data: segment volumes, realised prices, cash costs, production, sales and capacity utilisation.
- Reconcile earnings: classify the change in EBITDA as price, currency, volume, cost, mix or one-off.
- Update the cash bridge: start with operating cash flow, subtract maintenance and growth capex, dividends, interest and debt repayments, then check the resulting cash balance.
- Refresh debt risk: update gross debt, net debt, maturities, interest costs, cash location and refinancing events.
- Check execution: compare project milestones and spending with the announced plan; note delays, overruns and commissioning results.
- Revalue: run the bull, base and bear cases using the new normalised EBITDA and cash-flow assumptions.
- Write a decision rule: define in advance what would make you reduce exposure, such as a sustained cost miss, a material leverage increase, a project delay or a commodity assumption breaking your base case.
Keeping the same worksheet over time is more useful than reacting to one dramatic price move. It also exposes when an investment thesis has quietly changed.
How long can the Vedanta rally continue?
The rally can continue while four conditions hold together: commodity prices remain supportive enough to protect margins, operating volumes and costs improve, leverage and refinancing remain controlled, and dividends and growth capex are funded without undermining the balance sheet. FY2025-26 satisfies the first screen with strong reported results and Net Debt/EBITDA of 0.95x, but the ₹10,984 crore market-factor contribution to EBITDA growth makes normalisation testing essential.
The most durable continuation would come from volume growth, lower structural costs, successful aluminium and power capacity additions and a credible demerger or debt-reduction plan. The weakest form of continuation would rely on high metal prices, a favourable rupee, generous dividends and repeated refinancing. Investors should therefore treat the rally as conditional rather than self-sustaining, and update the bull, base and bear cases whenever prices, filings or project milestones change.
