Assess an AI cloud provider as both a financial counterparty and an infrastructure project. Before signing, reconcile unrestricted cash with operating cash flow and committed spending; test whether contracted revenue is collectible; rebuild GPU-level economics; map debt, covenants and refinancing needs; verify that promised capacity is commissioned; and model lower prices, delays, customer defaults and hardware obsolescence. No single cash, utilization or leverage threshold guarantees continuity, so your acceptance limits must reflect workload criticality, contract term and migration time.

What financial health means for an AI cloud buyer

A provider can report a large contract pipeline and still fail to deliver your GPUs. It may have cash that is restricted, customers that pay slowly, debt that matures before workloads generate cash, or equipment that loses value when a newer GPU generation arrives. The relevant question is not simply whether the company is profitable today. It is whether the contracting entity can fund, operate and replace the capacity you need for the entire commitment, including a stressed period.

Use five tests:

  • Liquidity: Can unrestricted cash, operating inflows and committed financing cover the next 12, 24 and 36 months of obligations?
  • Collectability: Are customer contracts backed by creditworthy counterparties, enforceable payment terms and realistic renewal assumptions?
  • Unit economics: Does each GPU-hour generate cash after power, colocation, networking, support, depreciation and financing?
  • Delivery: Are power, sites, networking, orchestration and GPUs already commissioned or contractually backed with remedies?
  • Resilience: Can the provider refinance, replace obsolete hardware and withstand a major customer default?

Price and benchmark performance matter only after these tests. A low hourly rate is not a bargain if an outage forces an emergency migration or if the provider cannot finance the next hardware refresh.

1. Establish the legal and reporting perimeter

Start by identifying exactly which entity will invoice you, own the GPUs and bear service obligations. A public parent, operating subsidiary and special-purpose vehicle may have different assets, creditors and reporting requirements.

Confirm the contracting structure

  • Legal name, registration jurisdiction and governing law of the service provider.
  • Parent guarantees, keep-well agreements or other support, including conditions and limits.
  • Whether capacity is owned, leased, vendor-financed or held in a special-purpose vehicle.
  • Which entity owns customer deposits, hardware, data-center leases and power contracts.
  • Audited reporting basis, fiscal year-end and the date through which accounts are current.

Ask for the latest audited annual report, quarterly accounts, management accounts, debt schedule, covenant package and internal forecast. An independent diligence checklist also calls for cash-flow burn, debt maturities and covenants, GPU inventory and supplier contracts. Match every number in a presentation to a line in the reporting entity’s accounts; a parent’s cash does not automatically belong to the subsidiary signing your order.

Define what counts as available liquidity

Separate unrestricted cash from restricted cash, customer deposits that are contractually committed to delivery, and undrawn facilities that have conditions or borrowing-base limits. Record currency, location and any transfer restrictions. A facility described as available may require additional collateral, financial ratios or lender approval before drawdown.

2. Reconcile liquidity to committed spending

Build a cash bridge for 12, 24 and 36 months. Use the provider’s opening unrestricted cash, realistic operating cash flow and legally committed funding, then subtract every cash requirement needed to keep your service running.

Closing liquidity = opening unrestricted cash + operating cash flow + collectible customer prepayments + committed equity or debt capacity - GPU purchases - construction and fit-out - power deposits - leases - interest - principal - maintenance capex

Run the bridge monthly where large GPU deliveries, debt maturities or power deposits create lumpy outflows. Treat forecast customer prepayments as a scenario, not as cash in hand, unless the money has been received and is not refundable under likely termination events.

What the figures can and cannot tell you

IREN reported, for the period ending June 30, 2026, $5,895.6 million in cash and equivalents and $1,723.9 million in restricted cash. The same reporting period showed a $702.6 million net loss and $2,100.4 million of net operating cash inflow. These figures illustrate why one headline balance is inadequate: restricted cash may not fund ordinary obligations, and accounting loss, operating cash generation and capital spending can move in different directions.

Liquidity item IREN figure for the period ended June 30, 2026 Buyer interpretation
Cash and cash equivalents $5,895.6 million Starting point; confirm how much is unrestricted and held by the service entity.
Restricted cash $1,723.9 million Do not count as generally available until release conditions are understood.
Net loss $702.6 million Signals accounting loss; reconcile it to cash generation and future funding needs.
Net operating cash inflow $2,100.4 million Test whether it is recurring, contract-backed and sufficient after capital spending.

IREN also warns that liquidity can be affected by falling GPU rental rates, counterparty risk, macroeconomic deterioration, higher costs and substantial additional capital requirements. Treat that disclosure as a useful checklist for your own downside model, not as evidence that a particular provider will fail.

“Our primary sources of liquidity and capital during the year ended June 30, 2026 included available cash and cash equivalents, proceeds from sales under our at-the-market facility and registered direct offering, proceeds from issuances of debt including convertible notes, GPU Financing, and cash inflows from operations, including AI Cloud Services contract prepayments reflected in deferred revenue.”

Stress the bridge

Recalculate the closing balance after a six- to twelve-month capacity delay, lower GPU rental rates, slower customer collections, higher electricity prices, an unsuccessful refinancing and accelerated replacement capex. Identify the first month in which a covenant breach, missed payment or unfunded purchase occurs. Ask management to explain the funding action for that month, not merely to provide a long-term target.

3. Examine customer concentration and contract collectability

Contracted value is not the same as cash. A large customer may delay payment, renegotiate, terminate within a permitted window or fail to renew. Concentration also creates financing risk when lenders rely on that customer’s take-or-pay commitment.

Request customer and contract evidence

  • Revenue by customer and, where confidentiality prevents names, concentration bands and the identity of the largest counterparties under NDA.
  • Contracted and remaining performance obligations, start dates and delivery milestones.
  • Prepayment amounts, refund rights, billing cadence, payment history and ageing of receivables.
  • Take-or-pay language, minimum commitments, termination rights, renewal dates and notice periods.
  • Service-credit caps, outage remedies and rights to suspend or reduce capacity.
  • Customer credit support, guarantees, deposits or letters of credit.

IREN states: “Our AI Cloud Services business has significant customer concentration, we are exposed to counterparty credit risk, and we may be unable to diversify our customer base.” Use that risk factor as a prompt to ask what percentage of contracted receipts depends on the largest customer and what portion is prepaid versus payable after service.

Model a customer failure

Remove the largest customer’s payments, then separately model a six-month delay, a price renegotiation and a non-renewal at expiry. Check the effects on operating cash flow, debt-service coverage, borrowing-base availability and your own capacity. A contract that covers your GPUs on paper may not protect you if the provider cannot replace the lost cash or if the lender can seize the financed equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Rebuild GPU unit economics

Ask for fleet-level and cohort-level economics rather than an average margin. A provider should be able to show how revenue and cash costs change by GPU generation, site and contract type.

Data to obtain per GPU cohort

  • Realized revenue per GPU-hour, split between committed, reserved and spot usage.
  • Utilized hours, idle capacity, cancellation rates and ramp time after commissioning.
  • Electricity cost per GPU-hour, demand charges, cooling overhead and power curtailment.
  • Colocation, bandwidth, cross-connect and networking costs.
  • Support labor, monitoring, repairs, spare parts and software-orchestration costs.
  • Purchase price, depreciation life, residual-value assumption and financing cost.

Recalculate contribution and cash margin under lower utilization, lower rental rates, higher electricity prices, delayed commissioning and accelerated hardware replacement. Do not rely on an industry-wide utilization threshold: the available evidence does not establish a universal safe percentage. Require the provider’s own cohort data and definitions, including whether utilization counts allocated but idle GPUs.

Variable Base case question Downside change to test
Utilization What percentage of installed hours is billed and collected? Idle capacity during ramp, churn or weak demand.
Rental rate What price is actually realized after discounts and credits? Lower rates as supply expands or a newer generation arrives.
Power What is the all-in electricity and cooling cost per GPU-hour? Higher tariffs, demand charges or curtailment.
Commissioning When does each site produce accepted, billable capacity? Six- to twelve-month delay with financing and lease costs continuing.
Replacement How long will each generation earn its modeled rate? Earlier replacement and lower resale proceeds.

Separate accounting margin from cash margin

Depreciation affects reported profit but not current-period cash; GPU purchases and principal repayments affect cash but may not appear as an immediate expense. Your model therefore needs both contribution margin and a cash-coverage view. Reconcile each to debt service, maintenance capex and the next equipment purchase.

5. Map debt, covenants and financing dependencies

Obtain a debt schedule that lists principal, interest rate, maturity, collateral, amortization, maintenance covenants, borrowing-base rules, GPU liens, cross-defaults and refinancing assumptions. Tie every maturity to contracted cash receipts and available liquidity in the same month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CoreWeave reports that it primarily finances infrastructure through asset-level debt supported by take-or-pay customer contracts, supplemented by corporate equity and debt financing. Asset-level funding can align borrowing with contracted capacity, but it also passes customer default and renewal risk into the financing stack. If a major contract is cancelled, ask whether lenders can reduce the borrowing base, demand repayment or enforce a lien over the GPUs serving your workload.

Questions for the financing package

  • Which GPUs, servers, leases, receivables and contracts secure each facility?
  • Can lenders sweep customer prepayments or restrict cash during a covenant breach?
  • Are there minimum liquidity, interest-coverage or debt-service tests?
  • What happens if a customer prepays less than forecast or disputes an invoice?
  • Do cross-default clauses allow a problem at one site or subsidiary to affect your service entity?
  • What portion of maturities assumes refinancing rather than existing cash?

Model refinancing failure as an operating scenario. A provider may be solvent on a long-term asset basis yet unable to meet a near-term maturity, especially when GPU collateral values and rental rates are falling.

6. Verify delivery and operational resilience

Financial diligence is incomplete if funded equipment and power cannot become usable capacity. Require evidence for each site and GPU generation, not a corporate-wide promise.

Evidence of commissioned capacity

  • Energized power allocation, utility interconnection status and cooling capacity.
  • Installed, tested and customer-accepted GPUs, with serial-level or cohort-level reconciliation where appropriate.
  • Network topology, inter-site bandwidth, cross-connect availability and failure domains.
  • Spare-parts inventory, repair contracts, staffing rosters and escalation coverage.
  • Orchestration, monitoring, capacity-allocation and incident-response systems.
  • Recent availability records, incident reports and remediation timelines.

Compare promised capacity with installed and accepted capacity by site, GPU generation and delivery date. A purchase order is not commissioned capacity; a powered room is not a production cluster; and allocated GPUs are not available if networking or orchestration is unfinished.

Put delivery risk in the contract

Use milestone acceptance tied to billable capacity, with notice obligations and enforceable remedies for delay. Define outage credits, termination or reduction rights, migration assistance, data export, maintenance windows and notice periods. Ensure the remedy applies to the capacity and site serving your workload rather than only to an aggregate company-level availability target.

7. Treat hardware obsolescence as a financial risk

New GPU generations can reduce rental rates, utilization and resale value for older equipment. A provider that financed a long-lived asset at an aggressive residual value may need additional capital sooner than its plan assumes.

Test the replacement plan

  • Map the GPU-generation mix, purchase dates and remaining depreciation life.
  • Ask what workloads can run on each generation and whether your software stack depends on a particular architecture.
  • Review replacement capex, lead times, supplier concentration and disposal or resale assumptions.
  • Reduce both rental rates and residual values in a faster-obsolescence case.
  • Check whether debt maturities occur before expected resale proceeds or replacement revenue.

Do not accept a forecast that assumes every GPU earns the same rate for its entire accounting life. Your downside case should include an accelerated refresh and a period in which old GPUs remain installed but command lower prices.

8. Compare providers on evidence, not headline price

Build one worksheet and use identical definitions for every provider. Ask each provider to identify the reporting date and scope of every metric.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis Evidence to collect Decision relevance
Liquidity Unrestricted cash, operating cash flow, committed facilities and 12/24/36-month bridge. Ability to fund operations and obligations through a downturn.
Leverage Net debt, collateral, maturities, covenants and refinancing assumptions. Risk of forced asset sales, cash lockups or service disruption.
Customers Concentration, payment history, prepayments, take-or-pay terms and credit support. Reliability of contracted cash and borrowing-base capacity.
Capacity Installed versus promised GPUs, energized power and customer acceptance by site. Probability that purchased capacity is actually usable.
Economics Realized GPU-hour price, utilization, power, colocation, support and financing costs. Whether growth creates cash or consumes it.
Hardware Generation mix, depreciation, replacement capex and residual-value assumptions. Exposure to price compression and obsolete collateral.
Resilience Availability history, spare capacity, network design, staffing and remedies. Operational continuity and recovery time.
Exit Data export, migration support, notice periods and termination economics. Cost and time required to leave after a financial or service problem.

Weight the axes according to your workload. A batch-training job that can pause may tolerate more capacity risk than a production inference service with a short migration window. Do not create a universal score that hides this difference.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Run base, downside and severe scenarios

Document assumptions, timing and trigger points so the provider cannot change definitions between cases.

Scenario Assumptions What to observe
Base Contracted payments arrive on schedule; commissioning follows plan; utilization and rental rates match the provider forecast. Cash after maintenance capex, debt service and committed expansion.
Downside Lower GPU rates and utilization, higher power costs, slower collections and a six-month capacity delay. First covenant pressure, funding gap and effect on your reserved capacity.
Severe Twelve-month delay, largest-customer default or non-renewal, refinancing failure and accelerated GPU obsolescence. Ability to operate, replace equipment, honor SLAs and support migration.

Set acceptance thresholds from the workload’s criticality and migration time. For example, require enough demonstrated liquidity and alternate capacity to complete migration before the severe case would interrupt service. The evidence does not establish a minimum cash runway, utilization rate, leverage ratio or margin that is safe for every buyer.

10. Use a staged diligence and approval process

  1. Screen: Identify the contracting entity, reporting perimeter, customer concentration, GPU-generation mix and upcoming maturities.
  2. Verify: Obtain audited and quarterly accounts, management forecasts, debt documents, contracts, inventory records, supplier agreements and site evidence.
  3. Rebuild: Create the liquidity bridge and GPU unit-economics model using your workload’s expected term, utilization and migration cost.
  4. Stress: Run the delay, customer-default, rate-compression, refinancing and obsolescence cases.
  5. Contract: Convert delivery, outage, data-export, migration and termination requirements into measurable obligations and remedies.
  6. Approve: Record who accepted each residual risk, what evidence must be refreshed and what event triggers a pause or migration.

Refresh balances, contracts, GPU prices and financing terms at the decision date. A conclusion based on an old balance sheet or a superseded financing package is not current diligence.

Equating contract value with safety

Problem: A large take-or-pay agreement is accepted without testing the customer’s credit or payment history.
Correction: Model default, delayed payment, renegotiation and non-renewal, then trace the effect through debt covenants.

Using benchmark performance as a solvency proxy

Problem: Fast training or inference results are treated as proof of durable operations.
Correction: Verify power, networking, staffing, spare parts, cash funding and SLA remedies separately.

Applying an unverified utilization rule

Problem: A universal utilization percentage is used to approve every provider.
Correction: Require provider-specific cohort data and stress the utilization level your workload can actually support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring refinancing and replacement dates

Problem: A forecast shows positive long-term earnings while near-term maturities or GPU refreshes remain unfunded.
Correction: Align monthly debt service and replacement capex with collectible receipts and committed liquidity.

FAQ

How much cash runway should an AI cloud provider have?

There is no universal safe runway. Set the requirement by combining contract term, workload criticality, migration time, committed capex, debt maturities and the severe scenario in your model. Count unrestricted and realistically transferable liquidity, not restricted balances or speculative financing.

Does a take-or-pay contract remove customer risk?

No. You still need to assess the customer’s ability to pay, termination and renewal language, credit support and the provider’s ability to fund delivery. Customer default can also affect asset-level borrowing tied to that contract.

What should I do if a provider will not disclose customer names?

Request concentration bands, payment history, remaining performance obligations and evidence of credit support under an appropriate confidentiality agreement. If you cannot test concentration or collectability, record that uncertainty as a risk and adjust workload size, term or exit provisions accordingly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should financial checks be refreshed?

Refresh balances, contracts, GPU pricing, capacity acceptance and financing terms at the decision date and whenever a material delivery, refinancing, customer or hardware change occurs. A stale review cannot establish that the provider can fund the commitment you are about to make.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
