For a new general voter registration in India, submit Form 6 through the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Voters’ Services Portal, then use the portal’s Track Application Status service to follow the submission. You can also apply through the Voter Helpline app or file through the election official responsible for your area. Use a different form if you are registering as an overseas elector or updating an existing entry.

Check that you are eligible to register

According to the ECI’s registration FAQ, an applicant must be an Indian citizen, ordinarily resident in the relevant constituency polling area, and not disqualified from enrolment. The age test is based on the qualifying dates used for electoral-roll revision: you must have attained 18 by 1 January, 1 April, 1 July, or 1 October in the relevant year. The portal describes Form 6 as available to people who are 18 or will turn 18 in the coming months; apply according to the qualifying-date rule.

Choose the correct form

Use the form that matches what you need to do. Form 6 is for a new general registration, not for correcting or moving an existing entry.

Form Use it for
Form 6 New general voter registration.
Form 6A Registration as an overseas elector. The ECI describes this route for an Indian citizen living abroad who has not acquired another country’s citizenship. The constituency is linked to the locality of the Indian residence stated in the applicant’s passport.
Form 7 Requesting deletion of a name from the roll or objecting to an entry.
Form 8 Shifting residence, correcting an existing roll entry, requesting a replacement EPIC, or marking PwD.

These form purposes are set out in the ECI’s FAQ and Citizen Service Portal. If your name is already registered and your details need changing, use Form 8 rather than applying again with Form 6.

Apply for a new registration

  1. Open the ECI Voters’ Services Portal: go to voters.eci.gov.in and select Form 6 for a new general registration. If you are applying as an overseas elector, choose Form 6A instead.
  2. Complete the current official form: enter the information requested and provide the supporting material specified by the form and its instructions. The ECI’s Manual on Electoral Rolls describes online forms that let applicants upload scanned documents and a photograph. Check the current form for what applies to your case; requirements should not be assumed from a general guide.
  3. Submit the application: keep the reference details provided after submission, since the ECI manual describes status lookup using a mobile number or reference ID.
  4. Use an alternative channel if needed: the ECI also identifies its Voter Helpline app and offline filing options. You may file the application and relevant documents in person with the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO), send them by post to the officer, or deliver them to the Booth Level Officer (BLO) for your polling area. See the ECI’s FAQ for the described routes.

Track the submitted application

  1. Open the ECI Voters’ Services Portal and choose Track Application Status.
  2. On the tracking sign-in page, enter the registered mobile number, email ID, or EPIC number, complete the captcha, and request an OTP. The ECI tracking page describes this login flow: Track Application Status sign-in.
  3. Use the OTP to continue and view the status associated with your application. The ECI manual also describes checking status with a mobile number or reference ID.

The reviewed ECI pages do not state a general processing-time guarantee. Check the tracker for your case’s progress or contact the responsible election official for a case-specific update; do not rely on an assumed number of days.

Check application progress separately from voter-list enrolment

Track Application Status follows a submitted form. It is not the same as searching the electoral roll to see whether your name appears after enrolment. The ECI’s registration FAQ advises people to verify enrolment in the electoral roll, so use the roll search as a separate check once you need to confirm that your name is listed.
