India has no single nationwide green-loan application form. You apply through a bank or NBFC’s own green-finance product, then demonstrate that the proposed use of funds fits a recognised environmental category and has measurable benefits. A strong application combines a clear project scope, technical specifications, supplier quotations, financial information, a defensible baseline and evidence that the lender can monitor the results. Federal Bank’s published Green Loan Scheme illustrates the process: it accepts individuals, proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies, lists renewable-energy and efficiency uses, and states a loan amount above ₹10 lakh to ₹500 lakh. Its page directs applicants to a branch or callback rather than a central government portal.
What a green loan is in India
A green loan is credit earmarked for a project that produces an environmental benefit. The lender still assesses repayment capacity, security and normal credit risk; “green” describes the use and sustainability characteristics of the financed activity, not a government guarantee, automatic subsidy or assured approval.
RBI’s framework for acceptance of green deposits, issued in 2023, requires a financing framework that explains how projects are evaluated and selected, how eligible activities are identified, and how sustainability information supplied by borrowers is monitored and validated. Banks therefore need more than an assertion that equipment is environmentally friendly. They need an auditable link between the money lent, the asset purchased and the claimed result.
Different lenders use different product names, forms, limits, pricing and technical tests. Start with a lender’s current named green-finance product, obtain its written checklist, and treat the product page as lender-specific rather than as a nationwide rule.

Which projects fit recognised green categories?
RBI’s eligible-category framework covers the following areas. SBI’s green-finance framework provides practical examples within several of them.
| Recognised category | Examples a lender may consider | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Renewable energy | Solar, wind, biomass and hydropower assets | Generation capacity, site details, equipment specifications, supplier or EPC quotation, permits and expected output |
| Energy efficiency | LED systems, efficient equipment and building retrofits | Existing energy use, proposed equipment ratings, operating assumptions and projected reduction per unit of service |
| Clean transportation | Electric vehicles and charging infrastructure | Vehicle or charger specifications, route or usage assumptions, charging plan and ownership documents |
| Climate-change adaptation | Assets designed to reduce identified climate vulnerability | Risk assessment, design features, site information and the adaptation outcome being measured |
| Sustainable water and waste management | Wastewater treatment, water-saving systems and recycling facilities | Process flow, capacity, input and output measurements, treatment standards and operating plan |
| Pollution prevention and control | Equipment that reduces or controls harmful emissions or discharges | Baseline pollutant data, technical performance specification, compliance documents and monitoring method |
| Green buildings | Buildings with recognised certified green-building characteristics | Design drawings, certification pathway or certificate, energy and water modelling, and construction budget |
| Sustainable management of living natural resources and land use | Projects using land or biological resources under sustainable-management practices | Land rights, management plan, permits and measurable resource-management outcomes |
| Biodiversity conservation | Projects protecting or restoring habitats and species | Site and ownership evidence, conservation plan, approvals and impact indicators |
A project can be commercially useful and still fail a green screen if its environmental objective is vague, its baseline is missing or the lender cannot verify where proceeds went. Conversely, a smaller project can qualify when its technical case and evidence are clear.
Step-by-step: applying for a green loan
1. Define the borrower and the financed asset
Write a one-page project description before contacting lenders. Identify the applicant’s legal form, the site, whether the site is owned or leased, the asset to be purchased or built, the requested amount and the implementation schedule. State what the project replaces or improves and who will operate it.

Federal Bank’s published scheme explicitly lists individuals, proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies as eligible business units. It states a loan amount above ₹10 lakh to ₹500 lakh. Those are that bank’s published terms for the page in 2026, not limits that apply to every Indian lender.
2. Map the proposal to a recognised category
Choose the narrowest applicable category from the table rather than using a broad label such as “sustainable business.” For example, an electric delivery fleet belongs under clean transportation; a factory motor replacement belongs under energy efficiency; and a wastewater plant belongs under sustainable water and waste management.
Describe the environmental objective in measurable terms: energy consumed per unit of output, electricity generated, water treated or saved, waste diverted, pollution reduced, or a documented adaptation or conservation outcome. Avoid claiming benefits that the design cannot measure.

3. Establish a defensible baseline
A baseline is the condition against which the project’s benefit will be measured. Use an appropriate historical period and explain the activity level during that period. For an industrial retrofit, baseline energy should be normalised against production or another service-output measure. For an EV fleet, document the vehicles and fuel use being replaced. For a building, record relevant energy and water consumption or the modelled performance of the conventional design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFederal Bank’s page gives an example threshold for efficient equipment: at least 15–20% lower energy consumption per unit of service output. That is an example of that bank’s published criterion, not a universal RBI threshold. Show the calculation, assumptions and source data so an appraiser can reproduce it.
4. Assemble the technical and commercial evidence
Prepare the design, capacity, equipment ratings, supplier or EPC quotations, itemised capital expenditure, operating assumptions and implementation schedule. Include ownership or lease documents and any permits relevant to construction, installation or operation. Keep versions of quotations and drawings so the submitted scope can be matched to later invoices.
Also prepare borrower KYC, constitution documents applicable to the legal form, financial statements and any information the lender requests for ordinary credit underwriting. A green designation does not remove repayment-capacity checks.
5. Shortlist lenders and request the current checklist
Contact banks or NBFCs that publish a green product or framework. Ask for the current application form, eligible categories, exclusions, minimum and maximum size, pricing and fees, margin, collateral or other security, approved-vendor rules, technical-appraisal process and disbursement milestones.

6. Submit a mapping sheet with the application
Attach a concise table that lets the credit and sustainability reviewers trace each claim:
| Project activity | RBI or lender category | Technical specification | Expected measurable benefit | Evidence document |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rooftop solar installation | Renewable energy | Panel, inverter and installed-capacity schedule | Expected annual electricity generation and displaced grid use | EPC quotation, site rights, design and generation estimate |
| Electric commercial vehicles and chargers | Clean transportation | Vehicle models, battery capacity and charger ratings | Fuel displacement and electricity-use estimate for the operating routes | Dealer quotations, route assumptions and charger plan |
| High-efficiency motors and controls | Energy efficiency | Existing and proposed ratings, run hours and control method | Energy use per unit of output, with the baseline calculation | Equipment quotations, production data and engineering calculation |
| Green-building construction or retrofit | Green buildings | Envelope, HVAC, lighting, water and certification specifications | Modelled or measured energy and water performance | Drawings, budget and certification documents or pathway |
| Wastewater or recycling system | Sustainable water and waste management | Treatment or processing capacity and process flow | Volume treated, water reused or waste diverted | Design, permits, operating plan and measurement method |
7. Preserve a complete submission trail
Save the application, lender correspondence, quotations, approvals, final purchase orders, invoices, commissioning records, meter readings and impact calculations. If the scope changes, document what changed and obtain the lender’s written approval where required. This record allows the lender to validate use of proceeds and protects you if a later review asks why the final asset differs from the initial proposal.
8. Meet disbursement and post-installation checks
Some lenders release funds against invoices, construction stages or commissioning milestones. Confirm the sequence before signing. After installation, retain photographs, serial numbers, completion or commissioning evidence, meter data and operating records. Report actual performance in the format and frequency specified by the lender.
Documents that prove a project is green
There is no universal document pack because lenders set their own appraisal rules. The following pack covers the evidence categories that a lender normally needs to review the environmental case and the credit case. Ask the chosen lender which items are mandatory and which are only supporting material.
| Evidence group | What to include | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Project definition | Asset description, site, ownership or lease, legal form, requested amount and schedule | Establishes who is borrowing, what is being financed and where it will operate |
| Technical design | Capacity, equipment ratings, process flow, drawings, specifications and operating assumptions | Allows the reviewer to test whether the claimed benefit is technically plausible |
| Commercial scope | Supplier or EPC quotations, itemised capex, operating costs and payment milestones | Connects the requested loan to actual eligible expenditure |
| Regulatory and site evidence | Ownership or lease documents, permits and approvals applicable to the project | Shows that the borrower can install and operate the asset lawfully |
| Borrower underwriting | KYC, constitution documents and financial statements requested for the applicant | Supports identity, legal capacity and repayment assessment |
| Impact case | Baseline, calculation method, assumptions, expected energy, water, waste or emissions change and measurement plan | Turns a general environmental claim into a reviewable result |
| Implementation record | Invoices, delivery records, commissioning evidence, serial numbers, meter data and impact reports | Enables use-of-proceeds and performance validation after approval |
Do not substitute a marketing brochure for engineering evidence. A brochure can identify a product, but the lender still needs the installed specification, quantity, cost and expected operating result for the particular project.
How lenders evaluate and monitor the green claim
The lender’s review normally has two connected tracks. Credit officers assess cash flow, repayment capacity, security and documentation. Technical or sustainability reviewers assess category eligibility, the baseline, the expected impact and whether the proposed monitoring method can verify the result.

RBI’s 2023 green-deposit framework describes the required process as “the process for project evaluation and selection by the RE … including identifying the projects fit for lending/investing within the eligible categories, monitoring and validating the sustainability information provided by the borrower.” The practical implication for a borrower is to make every material number traceable to a document, measurement or stated assumption.
At framework level, lenders such as SBI describe allocation reporting, third-party assurance and impact assessment. Those controls concern the lender’s green-finance framework; they do not mean that every borrower will receive an identical report template. Ask what data, certificates, site visits or assurances your facility will require and when.

Solar or another renewable-energy asset
Show the site right, system capacity, equipment specifications, layout, expected generation and connection or operating permissions. Reconcile the EPC quotation with the requested loan amount and identify any borrower contribution. Explain how generation will be measured and how the project will demonstrate the energy benefit after commissioning.
Electric vehicles and charging infrastructure
List each vehicle or charger, its rated specifications, purchase price and intended use. Provide a defensible operating assumption such as routes, distance or duty cycle, then compare expected electricity use with the fuel use of the vehicles being replaced. Include the charging-site right and the installation scope, not just the vehicle quotation.
Energy-efficiency equipment
Document the existing equipment, production or service output, operating hours and energy consumption. Specify the replacement equipment and controls, then calculate consumption per unit of output before and after the project. If relying on Federal Bank’s published example, show how the proposal reaches its stated 15–20% reduction threshold; do not present that example as an RBI-wide rule.
Green-building work
Separate eligible design and construction costs from unrelated building expenditure. Provide drawings, energy and water modelling, equipment schedules and the relevant certification pathway or certificate. Explain how the completed building’s performance will be measured rather than relying only on an intended rating.

Water, wastewater and recycling projects
Describe the incoming stream, treatment or processing steps, capacity, output quality and reuse or diversion route. Include permits, operating assumptions and a measurement plan for volumes treated, reused or diverted. A lender must be able to see both the environmental result and the asset that produces it.
Priority-sector classification: what the 2025 RBI directions say
“Renewable Energy” is a priority-sector category in RBI’s 2025 Directions. Under the stated conditions, renewable-energy bank loans up to ₹35 crore to eligible borrowers, and up to ₹10 lakh for an individual household borrower, can qualify for priority-sector classification.
These limits do not turn every green loan into a priority-sector loan. Classification depends on the borrower, project, lender and all applicable priority-sector rules. A facility may be marketed as green while failing the conditions for priority-sector reporting. Request the lender’s written classification decision and keep it with the sanction documents.

How to compare green-loan offers
Compare offers on the complete cost and evidence burden, not only on the advertised interest rate. Use the same project description when asking each lender for terms.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Eligible activities and exclusions | Does the lender accept this exact asset, borrower type, site and end use? |
| Loan size | What are the minimum and maximum amounts, and are they calculated before or after margin? |
| Pricing and fees | What interest-rate basis, processing fees, appraisal charges and other costs apply? |
| Margin and security | What borrower contribution, collateral, guarantee or insurance is required? |
| Borrower eligibility | Are individuals, residential borrowers, proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies accepted? |
| Technical appraisal | Who validates the design, baseline and expected impact, and what format is required? |
| Reporting burden | What meter data, invoices, certificates, site visits or impact reports are required after disbursement? |
| Disbursement | Are funds released at sanction, against invoices, in construction stages or after commissioning? |
| Priority-sector treatment | Will the lender classify the facility under PSL, and which conditions must remain satisfied? |
Common reasons applications stall or fail
- “Green” is used without a category: Rewrite the proposal against one recognised activity and name the financed asset.
- No baseline: Add historical bills, production or service-output data and explain the normalisation method.
- Unitemised costs: Replace a rounded budget with supplier or EPC quotations and an itemised capex schedule.
- Site or permit uncertainty: Provide ownership or lease evidence and identify approvals needed before installation.
- Benefit cannot be measured: Specify meters, operating records, sampling or another method and assign responsibility for collecting it.
- Scope changes after sanction: Notify the lender before substituting equipment or reallocating proceeds; preserve the approval trail.
- Assuming green means cheaper or unsecured: Ask for the actual rate, margin and security terms. Neither a concession nor approval is automatic.
- Assuming PSL treatment: Check the 2025 RBI conditions and obtain a written lender decision instead of relying on product branding.
Before you submit: a practical checklist
- Write the project description, borrower legal form, site, ownership or lease status and requested amount.
- Select the RBI or lender category and describe the environmental objective in measurable terms.
- Prepare the technical design, capacity, specifications, quotations, itemised capex and schedule.
- Calculate a baseline and expected change in energy, water, waste, emissions or another relevant indicator.
- Collect KYC, legal-form documents, financial statements, permits and site evidence requested by the lender.
- Ask the lender for its current exclusions, minimum size, margin, security, vendor rules and reporting requirements.
- Submit the category-to-evidence mapping sheet with the application.
- Obtain written confirmation of green treatment and, separately, any priority-sector classification.
- Archive the application, approvals, invoices, commissioning evidence and measurement records.
The strongest application is not the one with the broadest environmental language. It is the one in which a lender can follow the money from the sanctioned amount to the installed asset and then verify the claimed outcome from records.
