Open the layered PSD, locate the layer that controls the visible artwork, and choose the effect that matches your goal. For square blocks made from the image itself, convert that layer to a Smart Object and use Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic. For a repeating tile or decorative surface, use Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern, then clip the Pattern Fill to the target layer. Both methods preserve the template when you keep the edits on Smart Objects, Smart Filters, masks, and separate fill layers.
What a Photoshop mosaic template contains
A Photoshop template is a layered PSD starting point. It includes artwork, masks, adjustment layers, shadows, highlights, and placeholder groups that already define how a design appears on a product, package, screen, or other surface. A blank Photoshop preset is different: it supplies technical canvas settings such as width, height, resolution, and color mode but does not contain those design components.
Most templates include a layer or group whose visible pixels define the area where your design belongs. The name may be Your graphic here, Place design, Artwork, Graphic, Design, or Custom. The exact label varies, so judge the layer by what changes on the canvas when you hide it. The mosaic effect must be applied to that target, not to a shadow, highlight, background, or the entire template.

Choose between pixel blocks and repeating tiles
“Mosaic” can describe two different looks. Photoshop’s Mosaic filter redraws existing pixels as square blocks of color. A Pattern Fill repeats a selected design, such as a geometric tile or texture. They are not interchangeable: one abstracts the image already on the layer, while the other replaces the layer’s appearance with a repeated pattern.

| Approach | Visual result | Editing controls | Typical scope | Template compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixelate > Mosaic | Square blocks sampled from the image’s own colors and detail | Smart Filter lets you reopen the filter and change cell size; visibility can be toggled | Whole target layer, or a selected/masked area | Works when the design layer contains raster or Smart Object image content |
| Pattern Fill | A repeating tile, motif, or surface pattern | Pattern choice, Scale, Angle, blend mode, opacity, and mask remain adjustable | Clipped to the target layer’s visible pixels, or limited with a mask | Works best when the PSD has a clearly defined design layer or clipping structure |
Use Mosaic when you want a photograph or illustration to become recognizable blocks of its original colors. Use Pattern Fill when you want a consistent repeating surface, regardless of the detail in the source artwork.
Prepare the template before applying an effect
1. Open a layered PSD
Choose a template that exposes its customization layers. In Photoshop, open the PSD with File > Open, or use the template entry in the New Document dialog when the file is offered there. The mockup workflow documented by Adobe uses a sweatshirt and T-shirt mockup opened from Photoshop’s New Document dialog, but the same layer-inspection process applies to other products.
2. Inspect groups and placeholders
In the Layers panel, expand groups and temporarily hide obvious placeholders such as Your graphic here. Hiding a layer is a diagnostic step: it shows whether that layer controls the artwork, a mask, a shadow, or a decorative overlay. In a complex PSD, look first for groups named graphic, design, or custom. Do not apply the effect to the full canvas simply because the target layer is hard to find; doing so can pixelate the mockup’s lighting and background.
3. Duplicate before experimenting
Select the likely target layer and duplicate it with Layer > Duplicate Layer or the panel’s duplicate icon. Keep the original hidden as a fallback. This is useful even when you plan to use Smart Filters because it preserves the untouched layer structure if you later decide that the effect should cover a different area.

Apply a true pixel mosaic with the Mosaic filter
1. Convert the design to a Smart Object
Right-click the target image layer in the Layers panel and choose Convert to Smart Object. If the design is already a Smart Object, leave it as is. This step keeps the source image inside a protected container and allows the Mosaic operation to be added as a Smart Filter instead of permanently rewriting the layer’s pixels.
2. Open the filter
With the Smart Object selected, choose Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic. Photoshop displays a preview and a cell-size control. The filter redraws the image as blocks of color; it does not add a repeating external pattern.
3. Set cell size for the intended detail
Increase the cell size for larger, coarser blocks and a more abstract appearance. Decrease it to retain facial features, lettering, or other fine detail. Judge the setting at the output size you expect to deliver: a cell that looks subtle at high zoom can disappear when the mockup is reduced, while an oversized cell can obliterate small text.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfirm the filter when the preview matches the design. Photoshop places the effect beneath the Smart Object as a Smart Filter. You can double-click the filter name later to reopen the controls, click its eye icon to compare the unfiltered layer, or remove it without changing the source image.

4. Keep the template’s realism intact
Many mockups use separate shadow, highlight, displacement, or color-adjustment layers above the artwork. Leave those layers in their original order unless the template instructions say otherwise. The mosaic should affect the design surface while the mockup’s lighting continues to shape it. If the blocks look flat, check whether a highlight or shadow group was accidentally hidden rather than increasing the cell size.
Pixelate only part of the template
Use a layer mask for controlled coverage
Select the Smart Filter mask or the layer mask associated with the target. Paint with black where the mosaic should be hidden, white where it should remain, and gray for a partially blended transition. A soft brush can create a gradual edge; a hard brush keeps the boundary crisp. Because the mask is reversible, you can repaint it without restoring deleted pixels.
Make a geometric selection first
For a rectangular or free-form region, use the Marquee or Lasso tool before applying Mosaic. If the filter already exists, edit the filter mask rather than rerunning the effect. Feather a selection when a softer transition is needed, then fill the corresponding mask area.
Target the background around a subject
To pixelate everything except a person or object, choose Select > Subject, then choose Select > Inverse. Apply Mosaic to the inverse selection on the target layer or reveal the filter only in the inverse area through a mask. Inspect hair, thin objects, and gaps around the subject at high zoom; automatic subject boundaries can require manual mask cleanup.

Create a tiled mosaic look with Pattern Fill
1. Add a Pattern Fill layer
Select the target design layer, then choose Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern. Name the layer so its purpose is obvious, and confirm the dialog. Photoshop adds a separate Pattern Fill layer above the selected layer. This keeps the pattern independent from the original artwork and allows its settings to be changed later.
2. Choose and transform the pattern
In the Pattern Fill properties, choose the tile you want. Adjust Scale to make the repeated units larger or smaller and Angle to rotate the pattern. Double-click the Pattern Fill layer’s thumbnail whenever you need to revisit those controls. If the pattern overwhelms the mockup, adjust its blend mode or opacity rather than editing the template’s underlying pixels.
3. Clip it to the design area
To restrict the pattern to the target layer’s visible pixels, create a clipping mask. In the Layers panel, place the Pattern Fill directly above the target, right-click the Pattern Fill layer, and choose Create Clipping Mask. You can also hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and click the boundary between the two layers when the pointer changes to the clipping-mask icon.

4. Combine the pattern with existing artwork when appropriate
A Pattern Fill can sit above an image and use a blend mode, opacity, or mask to create a mosaic-like overlay rather than a complete replacement. Keep the Pattern Fill separate so you can switch between the original artwork and the tile treatment while preserving the template’s shadows and highlights.
Refine scale, edges, and color
Match the effect to the mockup’s perspective
A template may bend or distort the design across fabric, packaging, or another surface. Apply the effect to the layer that already participates in that distortion whenever possible. If the template uses a Smart Object as the editable artwork, edit the Smart Object’s contents and let the parent mockup apply its perspective and warp. Applying Mosaic to an unrelated layer above the finished mockup can produce square blocks that ignore the surface angle.
Protect readable details
Small logos, safety text, and seams may need to remain sharp. Mask the Mosaic filter away from those areas, or use a duplicate of the design with the detailed elements revealed above the pixelated layer. Keep the sharp layer aligned with the template so edges do not appear doubled.

When a target has transparent edges, large Mosaic cells can sample colors across the boundary and create a fringe. Inspect the edge against both light and dark backgrounds. A tighter mask, a smaller cell size, or a separate treatment for the edge can reduce the halo without changing the rest of the design.
Save an editable master and export a delivery copy
- Save the working file as a PSD with File > Save As. Keep the Smart Object, Smart Filter, Pattern Fill, clipping mask, and template groups intact.
- Use descriptive layer names such as Mosaic – 24 px cells or Pattern Fill – clipped to artwork so another editor can identify the treatment. Do not rename a layer that the template’s clipping or displacement structure depends on unless you have verified the links.
- Save a second version before major changes if you are testing several cell sizes, patterns, or masks.
- For delivery, use File > Export > Export As or the format required by the recipient. Export a flattened copy only after checking dimensions, color, transparency, and the visibility of the intended template layers. The PSD remains the authoritative editable file.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The whole canvas is pixelated
- You selected the background or a merged composite instead of the design layer. Hide candidate layers one at a time and identify which one controls the visible artwork.
- The effect is above the template rather than inside its clipping structure. Move the Smart Object or Pattern Fill into the target group and restore the original layer order.
- A selection was absent when you expected a limited effect. Undo, create the selection or mask, and apply the filter to the intended area.
The pattern covers the entire document
- The Pattern Fill is not clipped. Place it directly above the target layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.
- The base layer has no visible pixels in the area you expected. Select the actual artwork layer, not a group label or an empty placeholder.
- The clipping chain was broken by inserting another layer between the Pattern Fill and its base. Move the fill back above the correct base layer.
The Mosaic command is unavailable or looks wrong
- Confirm that an image-bearing layer is selected. An empty group, vector shape, or adjustment layer may not accept the filter in the way you expect.
- Open the Smart Object’s contents if the template stores the artwork there, then apply the filter to the image inside the Smart Object.
- Check zoom and output dimensions before judging cell size. The same setting can look very different at different display scales.
Changing the effect damages the original artwork
- Undo and return to the duplicated source layer if necessary.
- Convert the working image to a Smart Object before applying Mosaic, or use a separate Pattern Fill layer for a tiled treatment.
- Use masks instead of erasing pixels when limiting the effect.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Mosaic when blocks should be built from the image’s own colors.
- Choose Pattern Fill when the result must repeat a tile, motif, or texture.
- Find the layer that defines the visible design area before applying anything.
- Use a Smart Object and Smart Filter for reversible pixelation.
- Use a separate Pattern Fill and clipping mask for a reversible tiled surface.
- Use masks, Marquee, Lasso, or a subject selection when only part of the template should change.
- Preserve the PSD master and export a separate flattened file for delivery.
Which workflow should you use?
The correct workflow depends on the visual source of the blocks. A photograph transformed with Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic retains the photograph’s color relationships while simplifying its detail. A Pattern Fill produces a designed repeat and can be recolored, scaled, rotated, or blended independently. In either case, the template’s target layer and clipping structure determine where the effect appears. Taking time to identify that structure is more reliable than applying an effect to the visible composite and trying to repair the result afterward.
