If YouTube removed your live stream for copyright and applied a strike, the formal challenge is usually a copyright counter notification—but only if the removal was mistaken or the material was misidentified. First check YouTube Studio to confirm whether you have a live interruption, a Content ID claim, a scheduled removal, or a completed removal with a strike. Each follows a different process.
First identify what YouTube did
Open YouTube Studio and review the notice and affected content. The exact enforcement matters: a live interruption is not automatically the same as a completed copyright removal, and a Content ID claim is not itself a copyright strike.

When a counter notification is the right route
A counter notification is a legal request to restore content removed after a copyright removal request. It is not the same as disputing or appealing a Content ID claim. Use it only when you can explain truthfully why the removal was mistaken—for example, because you own the relevant rights, have permission, the material was misidentified, or you believe a copyright exception applies to your specific use. Exceptions such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain depend on the facts and applicable law; naming one does not guarantee that YouTube or a court will agree.
If your stream was merely interrupted and Studio does not show a completed removal and strike, follow the information shown for that event instead. If the issue is a Content ID claim, use its claim dispute or appeal process rather than submitting a counter notification prematurely.

How to submit a copyright counter notification
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer and open Content.
- Filter the list by Copyright and find the item marked Removed.
- Open the item’s copyright details and select the counter-notification action offered there. Follow the current eligibility prompts; YouTube’s labels and navigation can change.
- Provide the requested details, including your full legal name, physical address, and a clear, concise explanation of why the removal was mistaken or the content was misidentified. State only facts you can support and explain the basis specifically.
- Review and agree to the required legal statements, then sign with your full legal name and submit.
YouTube requires personal contact information and says it shares the counter notification with the claimant. The original uploader can submit it, or an authorized representative such as an attorney can submit on the uploader’s behalf. If disclosure of your contact information is a concern, consider whether using an authorized representative is appropriate. YouTube warns that false information or misuse of the process can lead to account termination or other legal consequences. What happens after you submit
- YouTube reviews validity. If the counter notification is valid, YouTube forwards it to the claimant.
- The claimant has 10 US business days. The period begins after YouTube forwards a valid counter notification. The claimant must provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. YouTube describes examples including a lawsuit, court order, Copyright Claims Board claim, or a determination of infringement from that Board. YouTube Help: Submit a copyright counter notification
- Content may remain down while legal action is pending. YouTube may resolve the associated strike while leaving the content removed during that process.
- If no qualifying response arrives in time, reinstatement may follow. YouTube says it may reinstate the content if the claimant does not respond within the stated period, unless you deleted it. Later evidence of legal action can still lead to the content being removed again.
These are YouTube’s platform procedures, not a decision about who owns the copyright or whether your legal position will prevail. YouTube says it does not determine ownership or mediate for rights holders. Other ways to resolve a copyright strike
- Ask the claimant to retract the removal request. You can contact the claimant and request a retraction; YouTube’s copyright details may identify the claimant or provide contact information. A retraction can resolve the removal without a counter notification. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests
- Complete Copyright School and wait for expiry. YouTube says a strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School. Expiry does not restore the removed video. YouTube Help: Copyright strikes
- Act during the scheduled-removal window. If the notice says removal is scheduled, check its deadline and available actions before it takes effect. YouTube says deleting eligible content during the seven-day period can avoid the strike; deleting it after removal does not clear a strike already applied. Prevent a repeat interruption on a future stream
Before going live, confirm that you have the necessary rights for everything the stream will play, including music, recordings, video clips, and another live broadcast. Keep permission or license records available. If you are licensed to use third-party content but YouTube still detects it, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube specifically advises licensed creators to do this because having a license may not, by itself, prevent a live interruption. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
