If YouTube has already applied a copyright strike to your live stream, there is no general appeal route that avoids a counter notification. Your non-counter-notification options are to ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request or, if you qualify, complete Copyright School and wait 90 days for the strike to expire. If the removal is only scheduled and the strike is not active yet, you may still have a seven-day window to act.
First check whether the strike is active or the removal is scheduled
Open the notice and YouTube Studio and confirm the status of the affected live stream. A scheduled copyright removal request is not the same as an applied strike: the scheduled notice gives you seven days before removal and a strike. Once the strike is active, the available options are different.
- Active strike: The live stream has been removed and the copyright strike appears in YouTube Studio. Consider asking the claimant to retract the request or, if eligible, complete Copyright School and wait for expiration.
- Scheduled removal: The seven-day pre-strike window is still open. YouTube lists deleting the content before the deadline or seeking a retraction as actions that may avoid the strike. Check the notice promptly for its deadline and instructions.
YouTube says that when an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. A strike is distinct from a Content ID claim and a Community Guidelines strike. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes
If the copyright strike is already active
Ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request
- In YouTube Studio, open the copyright section and find the affected video under Active copyright strikes.
- Use the claimant contact information shown for the video to ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request. Be specific about the removal request and the content involved.
- Keep copies of the notice and your communications. YouTube recommends keeping records related to copyright removals. YouTube Help: Copyright removal tips
The claimant—not YouTube—decides whether to retract. YouTube says it does not mediate copyright ownership disputes. If the claimant retracts the removal request, the associated strike may be cleared unless other videos are tied to it; the removed content may be restored unless you deleted it. Complete Copyright School and wait, if you qualify
YouTube says an eligible copyright strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three copyright strikes. This clears the strike when the eligibility conditions are met; it does not restore the removed live stream. A channel that receives three copyright strikes in 90 days is subject to termination. If the removal is scheduled but the strike is not active
YouTube gives the uploader seven days to act before a scheduled copyright removal takes effect and a strike is applied. The listed options include deleting the content before the window expires or asking the claimant to retract the request. A counter notification cannot be filed until the removal takes effect and the strike is applied. After a strike is active, deleting the video generally does not resolve it. Check YouTube Studio and the notice to verify whether the removal is pending and how much time remains. YouTube Help: Copyright removal options

Why a Content ID or Community Guidelines appeal is not the answer
A Content ID claim appeal is part of the claim process, before a possible takedown. If the claimant rejects an appeal, they may submit a copyright removal request; if that request is valid, YouTube removes the video and applies a strike. A Community Guidelines appeal concerns a different policy basis. Neither process is a general appeal route for reversing an already-applied copyright strike. What a counter notification would mean
A counter notification is a legal request to reinstate content removed after a copyright removal request, not an ordinary appeal form. It is intended for cases where you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification, including a possible copyright exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. YouTube’s instructions require contact information, a clear explanation to the claimant, and direct links to the removed material. If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action; otherwise, the content may be reinstated.
