To find out whether images are slowing a page, combine real-user data with a lab test: identify the page’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element, match it to its network request, inspect when that request starts and finishes, and compare the delivered image dimensions and format with what the page needs. Then change one likely cause and measure again. An image can be the LCP element without its file size being the main source of delay.
Start with field data and a repeatable lab test
Run the exact page URL through PageSpeed Insights. Read its CrUX field data separately from its Lighthouse lab diagnostics: field data reflects visits from real users, while a lab run provides a controlled diagnostic snapshot. Check mobile and desktop independently because results can differ by device.
CrUX may not have enough data for the exact URL. In that case, PageSpeed Insights may show origin-level data instead. Treat that as context about the site’s origin, not proof of how this particular page performs. For LCP, the web.dev guidance is 2.5 seconds or less at the 75th percentile, evaluated separately for mobile and desktop. That is a user-experience target, not evidence by itself that an image caused a poor result.
Confirm which element is LCP
Use the LCP element diagnostic in PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse, or record a page load in Chrome DevTools’ Performance panel. Verify the element before changing images: LCP can be an image, text block, or video. If it is an image, note its URL and find the corresponding request in the Network panel or performance trace.

Compare the request and render timings, not only the asset’s byte size. The request may start late, take a long time to transfer, or finish promptly while the element renders later. Delayed discovery, prioritization, or other page and server work can matter more than compression. Inspect what the browser actually downloads
Check dimensions against the rendered image
Compare the image’s intrinsic pixel dimensions with its rendered dimensions and the viewport or device needs. A source delivered at far higher dimensions than the page displays may be a candidate for responsive variants. Inspect the selected resource in the browser: the original file or a CMS setting does not necessarily tell you which variant the browser received. Choose format and compression by testing
WebP and AVIF can offer better compression than older JPEG or PNG alternatives, but support differs across browsers and contexts. Check current browser support for your audience and test representative assets. The web.dev image guide reports that AVIF tests have shown savings greater than 50% compared with JPEG in some cases; this is a possible result, not a guaranteed reduction for a particular image or workflow.
Use lossy compression where its visual trade-off is acceptable. Detailed photographs often tolerate it better than images with small text, sharp edges, or flat artwork, where artifacts can be conspicuous. There is no universally correct quality setting: compare file size and the rendered result against your site’s quality bar.

Make one targeted change, then measure again
- Oversized asset: test a right-sized image or responsive candidates and verify which one the browser selects.
- Large transfer for the required dimensions: test an appropriate modern format and compression level; inspect the output at its actual display size.
- Image below the fold: evaluate deferred loading, but do not unnecessarily delay the initial viewport or its LCP asset.
- Late request start: investigate how the browser discovers and prioritizes the image rather than repeatedly reducing its file size.
- Fast download but late LCP: inspect the remaining LCP timing stages and page or server work.
Repeat the test under comparable conditions and compare the metric and diagnostic evidence, not just a single overall score. Lighthouse is useful for repeatable lab checks and regression detection; after release, field data helps show what users experience. A lab improvement does not automatically establish a matching field improvement.

When interpreting any result, ask whether it is field or lab evidence, page- or origin-level, which device and network conditions it represents, whether it identifies the LCP element and resource timing, and whether you can repeat it for regression checks.
