Do not decide whether to buy Siam Cement (SCC) from a single quarterly profit number. Build a comparable three-to-five-year and four-to-eight-quarter history, separate SCG’s businesses, explain the operating drivers, test profit against cash flow, examine debt and liquidity, check management guidance against delivery, and value normalized earnings under several scenarios. Only then set a buy price, position size and clear reasons to sell.

What a decision-grade SCC earnings analysis must answer

Your analysis should answer five questions in order:

  • What changed? Revenue, EBITDA, EBIT, net profit and margins compared with the prior year and prior quarter.
  • Why did it change? Selling prices, volumes, product mix, energy and feedstock costs, freight, plant utilization, foreign exchange, construction demand and chemicals spreads.
  • Is the profit repeatable? Operating cash flow, free cash flow, working capital and the share of earnings coming from recurring operations rather than exceptional or non-cash items.
  • Can the balance sheet carry the business? Gross debt, net debt, maturities, cash, interest expense, covenants and refinancing requirements.
  • Does the share price offer a margin of safety? A valuation based on normalized earnings, realistic scenarios and appropriate Thai or regional peers.

A headline profit can rise because of a one-time gain, a favorable currency movement or an inventory effect while the underlying businesses weaken. Conversely, a temporary earnings dip can be acceptable when cash generation, leverage and the cycle are improving. The job is to distinguish those cases before committing capital.

Start with a clean comparison set

Download annual reports, quarterly financial statements, management discussion and analysis (MD&A), results presentations, dividend resolutions and financing disclosures from SCG’s listed-company newsroom. Cross-check the same periods in the Stock Exchange of Thailand SCC factsheet and the Thai SEC financial-statement database. The SEC records showed consolidated and company filings through the second quarter of 2026 and were updated on 18 October 2026; still, refresh the latest quarter immediately before making an investment decision.

Use consistent periods and accounting scope

Pull at least three to five complete annual years and the latest four to eight quarters. Keep the following consistent:

  • Consolidated versus company-only statements.
  • Baht currency and the same unit scale, such as million baht.
  • Continuing operations versus discontinued operations.
  • Reported accounting basis, including any restatements.
  • Segment definitions and the treatment of intersegment sales.

Create a change log for restatements, acquisitions, disposals and segment reclassifications. A growth rate is not meaningful when the comparison period includes a business that is no longer consolidated or when management has moved activities between segments.

Build a working data sheet

For each quarter and year, record sales, EBITDA, EBIT, net profit, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, free cash flow, gross debt, cash, net debt, interest expense, shares outstanding and dividends. Add the reported explanation for material changes beside each number. This prevents a later narrative from becoming detached from the underlying statements.

Analyze SCG by segment before looking at the group total

SCG discloses six principal business groupings: SCG Cement and Green Solutions, SCG Smart Living, SCG Distribution and Retail, SCG Decor, SCG Chemicals and SCGP. They do not share the same demand cycles, margins, capital requirements or exposure to energy, raw materials and foreign exchange. A group-level margin can therefore conceal a sharp improvement in one business and deterioration in another.

Reconcile segment figures to consolidated results

  1. Copy each segment’s sales and EBITDA from the quarterly and annual disclosures.
  2. Add the segment figures and compare the sum with consolidated sales and EBITDA.
  3. Investigate reconciliation items, eliminations or changes in presentation rather than forcing the numbers to match.
  4. Calculate each segment’s share of group sales and EBITDA for every period.
  5. Identify which segment explains the change in group EBITDA, operating profit and cash flow.

Look for mix effects. A business can report flat sales but higher EBITDA if a larger share comes from higher-margin products. The reverse is also possible: sales growth may be low quality when it comes from lower-margin volume or pass-through pricing that adds little profit.

Questions for each business

  • Cement and Green Solutions: Check construction demand, selling prices, volumes, fuel and electricity costs, freight and kiln utilization.
  • Smart Living: Separate housing and renovation demand from product-mix changes and distribution effects.
  • Distribution and Retail: Examine same-market demand, inventory turns, gross margin and working-capital requirements.
  • Decor: Track housing-related demand, export exposure, utilization and product mix.
  • Chemicals: Focus on product spreads, feedstock costs, plant operating rates, inventory gains or losses and the cycle in regional petrochemicals.
  • SCGP: Examine packaging demand, fiber and recovered-paper costs, energy, volumes, capacity utilization and geographic mix.

These are analytical lenses, not assumptions that every factor moved in a particular quarter. Confirm the actual driver in SCG’s MD&A and results presentation.

Measure growth, margins and the quality of the change

Calculate year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter changes for revenue, EBITDA, EBIT and net profit. Pair every growth figure with a margin: EBITDA margin, EBIT margin and net margin. A useful formula is EBITDA margin = EBITDA ÷ consolidated sales. Also calculate segment margins so that a group improvement can be traced to its source.

Dated Q2 2025 benchmark

SCG’s Q2 2025 disclosure provides a historical reference point, not a current forecast:

Period Consolidated sales Consolidated EBITDA Source and qualification
Q2 2025 124,685 million baht 17,431 million baht SCG Q2/2025 MD&A; quarter ended in 2025
First half of 2025 249,077 million baht Not reported in the cited benchmark SCG Q2/2025 MD&A; cumulative six-month sales

The Q2 figures imply an EBITDA margin of about 14.0% for that quarter (17,431 divided by 124,685). Use the exact reported figures and your own calculation as a check, then replace the benchmark with the latest quarter when assessing today’s valuation.

Separate volume, price and mix

Revenue growth is more informative when decomposed into:

  • Price: Higher selling prices can lift revenue quickly, but test whether customers accepted the increase and whether costs rose alongside it.
  • Volume: More tonnes, units or shipments can improve fixed-cost absorption, although discounting may reduce the benefit.
  • Mix: A shift toward premium products, export markets or higher-value solutions can raise margins without large volume growth.
  • Currency: Translation and transaction effects can change reported baht results without changing local operating performance.

Compare the explanation with utilization, realized prices, energy and feedstock costs, freight and industry demand. Treat a margin rebound as higher quality when recurring pricing, cost reductions or utilization support it; treat a rebound driven by a one-time gain or temporary inventory effect with caution.

Test whether reported earnings convert into cash

Net profit is an accounting result. Operating cash flow shows how much cash the businesses generated after collecting from customers and paying suppliers and employees. Free cash flow is operating cash flow less capital expenditure; it indicates what remains for debt reduction, dividends and reinvestment.

A practical cash-conversion review

  1. Compare net profit with operating cash flow for each quarter and year.
  2. Calculate operating-cash-flow-to-net-profit and free-cash-flow-to-net-profit ratios, while noting that quarterly working-capital swings can distort them.
  3. Read the cash-flow statement for receivables, inventories and payables. A receivables build can indicate slower collections; an inventory build can reflect weak demand or higher input prices.
  4. Identify non-cash gains, associate income, fair-value movements and exceptional items included in profit.
  5. Check whether capital expenditure is maintenance spending, expansion or a required environmental and safety investment.
  6. Review several periods rather than judging cash conversion from one quarter.

Repeated profit without operating cash deserves a lower confidence level, especially when debt is rising or dividends rely on new borrowing. Strong cash conversion does not guarantee a good stock purchase, but weak conversion narrows the margin for error.

Examine debt, liquidity and refinancing risk

Debt determines how much of SCG’s operating profit can support dividends and reinvestment after interest and maturities. Review gross debt, cash and cash under management, net debt, interest expense, maturity dates, covenant headroom and committed credit lines.

Interest coverage 6.5 times SCG Q2/2025 financial results and debt profile; Q2 2025 disclosure

At 5.1 times net debt to EBITDA, a modest fall in EBITDA can raise leverage quickly. Interest coverage of 6.5 times indicates the reported relationship between operating earnings and interest in that disclosure, but it is not a promise that coverage will remain unchanged. Recalculate both ratios using the latest twelve-month EBITDA, current net debt and the latest interest expense.

Debt checks that often reveal hidden risk

  • Map each maturity by year and currency; a large near-term maturity can matter even when total debt is stable.
  • Separate fixed-rate and floating-rate debt to estimate sensitivity to interest-rate changes.
  • Read covenant definitions carefully because lender ratios may differ from your calculation.
  • Compare cash balances with restricted cash and subsidiaries that may not be freely distributable.
  • Check whether planned capital expenditure or acquisitions depend on refinancing.
  • Consider foreign-exchange exposure when debt and operating cash flows are in different currencies.

Compare management guidance with what actually happened

Use SCG’s newsroom for outlook statements, results presentations and financing disclosures. Put each guidance item in a dated log with the assumption, the period covered and the eventual result. Relevant fields include revenue, EBITDA, chemicals spreads, utilization, energy costs, construction demand and capital expenditure.

How to score guidance

  1. Record the original range or directional statement and the date issued.
  2. Write down the assumptions management gave for prices, volumes, spreads, costs, currencies and demand.
  3. Compare the next filing’s actual results with those assumptions.
  4. Record every revision and management’s stated cause.
  5. Distinguish an industry shock from an avoidable forecasting error.

Repeatedly optimistic guidance should reduce the confidence you place in an upside case. Repeatedly conservative guidance can be useful, but only if actual delivery confirms it. Test management’s assumptions against subsequent filings and observable industry conditions rather than treating guidance as a forecast you must accept.

Value SCC only after the operating review

Valuation is most useful after you understand the earnings base. Use more than one method:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Normalized P/E: Apply a multiple to mid-cycle net profit, removing clearly identified exceptional items.
  • EV/EBITDA: Compare enterprise value with recurring EBITDA while accounting for debt, cash and minority interests where relevant.
  • Price-to-book: Useful alongside return on equity and asset quality, especially for a capital-intensive group.
  • Dividend yield: Assess the dividend against free cash flow, payout policy, debt maturities and the sustainability of earnings.

Compare SCC with appropriate Thai and regional peers on revenue and EBITDA growth, segment margins, operating- and free-cash-flow conversion, net debt to EBITDA, interest coverage, capital-expenditure intensity, maturity profile, valuation, dividend policy and geographic and end-market exposure. A lower multiple is not automatically cheaper if the company has weaker cash conversion, higher leverage or more cyclical earnings.

Use scenario ranges rather than one target price

Build at least three cases:

  • Downside: Lower chemicals spreads, weak construction demand, higher energy costs, reduced utilization, adverse foreign exchange and limited cash generation.
  • Base: Mid-cycle prices and spreads, normal utilization, manageable input costs and debt reduction consistent with operating cash flow.
  • Upside: Improving spreads and construction activity, better mix, stronger utilization and sustained cost or pricing gains.

For each case, estimate segment sales, EBITDA margin, net profit, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, net debt and the valuation multiple you believe the market would pay. Stress-test interest rates, energy prices, chemicals spreads, construction demand and exchange rates. The buy decision should survive a reasonable downside case rather than depend on the most optimistic assumptions.

Turn the analysis into a buy-or-wait decision

Write the investment thesis in a few precise statements. For example: which segment should improve, which operating driver supports that improvement, how quickly cash flow should respond, and why the current valuation fails to reflect it. Then define:

  • Catalysts: Specific events such as a margin recovery, stronger volumes, a spread improvement or debt reduction.
  • Risks: Factors that could reduce earnings, cash flow or access to refinancing.
  • Valuation range: A price range based on normalized earnings and your scenarios, not a single precise target.
  • Position size: A percentage that reflects cyclicality, leverage and the possibility that the thesis takes several quarters.
  • Invalidation points: Observable conditions that would prove the thesis wrong, such as persistent cash losses, a covenant problem, an adverse segment trend or leverage above your limit.

Buy only when recurring cash earnings, manageable leverage and a valuation margin of safety fit your time horizon and risk tolerance. If the evidence is mixed, waiting for a better price or another filing is a valid decision; owning the stock is not required to benefit from disciplined analysis.

A repeatable pre-purchase checklist

  1. Download the latest annual and quarterly filings from SCG, SET and the Thai SEC.
  2. Confirm the comparison periods, consolidation scope, currency, continuing operations and segment definitions.
  3. Build the three-to-five-year annual and four-to-eight-quarter data series.
  4. Reconcile segment sales and EBITDA with consolidated totals.
  5. Calculate revenue, EBITDA, EBIT and net-profit growth and margins.
  6. Explain price, volume, mix, utilization, energy, feedstock, freight, foreign-exchange and demand effects.
  7. Compare net profit with operating cash flow and free cash flow; investigate working-capital movements and exceptional items.
  8. Update debt, cash, net debt, maturities, interest expense, covenants, net debt to EBITDA and interest coverage.
  9. Score management guidance against actual delivery and document revisions.
  10. Value normalized earnings under downside, base and upside cases and compare suitable peers.
  11. Write catalysts, risks, position size and invalidation points before looking at the buy price.
  12. Refresh volatile figures—latest-quarter results, prices, guidance and dividends—on the day you decide.

Common analytical mistakes

  • Buying the headline: One quarter cannot establish a durable trend.
  • Ignoring mix: Group revenue can rise while the contribution from higher-margin businesses falls.
  • Confusing EBITDA with cash: Capital expenditure, taxes, working capital and interest still have to be paid.
  • Using stale leverage: The Q2 2025 debt figures are historical context, not current balance-sheet data.
  • Annualizing an unusually strong quarter: Cyclical chemicals and construction earnings can reverse.
  • Treating guidance as fact: Record assumptions and test them against subsequent results.
  • Choosing a peer multiple mechanically: Adjust for debt, cash conversion, cycle position, geography and end-market exposure.
  • Setting a target without an exit rule: A thesis needs conditions that would make you reduce or close the position.

Where to refresh the evidence

Use the SCG listed-company newsroom for issuer releases, annual reports, quarterly results, MD&A, presentations, dividend resolutions and financing updates. Use the SET SCC factsheet for exchange-listed company information and the Thai SEC records for filed financial statements. The Q2 2025 documents linked above are useful dated benchmarks, while the SEC database’s 18 October 2026 update confirms that filings through Q2 2026 were available at that date. Always replace historical benchmarks with the latest filing before acting.
