Analyze Meta earnings by separating three questions: how fast revenue is growing, whether advertising growth comes from more impressions or higher prices, and whether the infrastructure and talent required for AI are consuming the resulting profit and cash flow. Meta reported $200.97 billion of 2025 revenue, $60.46 billion of net income and $23.49 of diluted earnings per share. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue reached $60.80 billion, up 28% year over year, while ad impressions rose 14% and average price per ad rose 12%. The same quarter brought $42.03 billion of costs and expenses, up 55%, and $31.08 billion of capital expenditures. The right conclusion therefore depends on both the income statement and the scale of the AI infrastructure build-out.
A practical framework for reading Meta’s earnings
Read the release in a fixed order so a strong headline number does not hide a deteriorating driver. Start with revenue and the next-quarter outlook, decompose advertising into impressions and price, compare engagement with monetization, then test whether expense growth and capital spending are outpacing operating progress. Finish by checking cash conversion, guidance changes and the limitations Meta attaches to its metrics.
| Question | Metric to read | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is the business expanding? | Reported revenue, year-over-year growth and next-quarter guidance | Shows current scale and management’s near-term expectation. |
| What is driving ad revenue? | Ad impressions and average price per ad | Separates volume growth from monetization. |
| Is user activity supporting future sales? | Daily active people (DAP), ad load and pricing | Connects engagement to the inventory available for advertisers. |
| What is AI investment doing to profits? | Expenses, depreciation, infrastructure, cloud, technical compensation and capex | Shows whether investment is merely increasing costs or building capacity for future returns. |
| Are accounting profits turning into cash? | Operating income, net income, operating cash flow and free cash flow | Large infrastructure payments can compress cash even when earnings rise. |
1. Establish revenue scale and direction
Use the full-year baseline
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K reports total revenue of $200.97 billion, net income of $60.46 billion and diluted EPS of $23.49. Net income divided by revenue implies an approximately 30.1% net margin, calculated from the reported figures and rounded. This baseline lets you judge whether a later quarter is accelerating, decelerating or simply growing from a much larger base.
Read the quarter and the guide together
For Q2 2026, Meta reported $60.80 billion of revenue, an increase of 28% from the same quarter a year earlier. Management guided Q3 2026 revenue to $61 billion to $64 billion. Treat the range as a planning envelope, not a promise: compare the midpoint with the prior year’s quarter, then revisit the range after the next report to see whether management raised, maintained or cut it.

Revenue growth should be compared with expense growth in the same period. Q2 2026 costs and expenses were $42.03 billion, up 55% year over year. A 28% revenue increase alongside 55% expense growth means the quarter cannot be judged on sales momentum alone; operating leverage, margins and cash generation become central parts of the analysis.
2. Decompose advertising growth into impressions and price
What each metric means
Meta defines average price per ad as total advertising revenue divided by the number of ads delivered. Ad impressions measure the quantity of ads shown. The two metrics answer different questions: impressions indicate inventory and demand for placements, while price indicates how effectively Meta monetizes each delivered ad.
Apply the two-factor test
In Q2 2026, ad impressions increased 14% year over year and average price per ad increased 12%. That is a healthier pattern than growth powered by only one factor because Meta was both delivering more ads and receiving more revenue per ad on average. The percentages should not be mechanically added to recreate reported revenue: advertising revenue includes measurement and mix effects, percentages are rounded, and total company revenue also contains non-advertising items.
The 2025 annual pattern was similar but slower: ad impressions rose 12% and average price per ad rose 9%. Compare the annual figures with the Q2 2026 figures to identify acceleration in both volume and monetization, while remembering that a single quarter can be affected by seasonal advertiser budgets, geography and product mix.

Interpret common combinations
| Impression trend | Price trend | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Up | Up | Volume and monetization are both contributing; usually the strongest combination. |
| Up | Down | Meta is adding inventory but receiving less per ad, which can signal weaker demand, lower-value mix or deliberate ad-load expansion. |
| Down | Up | Revenue may be protected by pricing, but shrinking inventory can limit future growth. |
| Down | Down | Both demand and inventory are under pressure; investigate engagement, advertiser conditions and product changes. |
Do not infer that price growth means advertisers are simply paying more for identical exposure. The average can change when spending shifts among countries, surfaces, formats, audiences and campaign objectives. Use the direction over several quarters rather than treating one percentage as a complete causal explanation.
3. Check engagement as a leading indicator
Daily active people (DAP) provides a user-base context for ad inventory. Meta reported average DAP of 3.60 billion for June 2026, up 3% year over year. The December 2025 average was 3.58 billion, up 7% year over year. Those dates are not directly comparable seasonal quarters, but the figures show why engagement growth should be tracked separately from monetization: a large user base can still produce faster advertising growth through ad load, pricing and mix even when user growth moderates.
Compare DAP with impressions. If DAP grows slowly while impressions grow much faster, impressions per person are likely increasing, although the published figures alone do not identify the precise contribution of ad load, session frequency or surface mix. If DAP and impressions rise together but price per ad falls, incremental inventory may be less valuable or concentrated in lower-priced markets.
- Record the DAP period and year-over-year rate exactly as reported.
- Compare the trend with impressions and average price per ad.
- Look for several quarters of direction before declaring a structural change.
- Separate user growth from monetization; neither metric substitutes for the other.
4. Measure the cost of AI investment
Start with the income statement
Meta says 2026 expense growth is being driven mainly by infrastructure, depreciation, cloud spending and technical talent, including AI hiring. Q2 2026 costs and expenses of $42.03 billion were up 55% year over year. The quarter included $2.40 billion of legal charges and $1.18 billion of severance. Treat those items as separately identifiable contributors to the total, then examine whether the remaining cost base is also accelerating because of the infrastructure program.

Depreciation is especially important in an AI build-out. Capital equipment is paid for upfront, while depreciation generally enters the income statement over its useful life. Consequently, cash pressure can appear before the full depreciation burden, and the depreciation burden can continue after a particular quarter’s equipment payments have ended.
Track capital expenditures with the same definition
Meta reported $72.22 billion of 2025 capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases. Q2 2026 capital expenditures were $31.08 billion. Management’s Q2 2026 outlook called for $130 billion to $145 billion of full-year 2026 capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases. Meta’s CFO said the range was “narrowed from our prior outlook of $125-145 billion.” An earlier full-year 2025 release had guided 2025 capex to $115 billion to $135 billion; record each guidance range with its date because successive outlooks are not interchangeable.
Capex is not identical to an “AI expense.” It can include data centers, servers, networking and other infrastructure that supports multiple products, and the reported definition includes finance-lease principal payments. Use management’s expense commentary and asset disclosures to connect spending to AI without labeling every dollar as an AI-only cost.

- Revenue: note the growth rate and Q3 guide.
- Operating costs: identify infrastructure, depreciation, cloud, technical compensation, legal charges and severance.
- Capex: compare the quarter’s $31.08 billion with the full-year $130-$145 billion range and the prior guidance snapshot.
- Profit and cash: check operating income, net income, operating cash flow and free cash flow for the same period.
This bridge distinguishes investment from deterioration. Rising costs can be rational if capacity is being built and revenue productivity follows; the warning sign is sustained expense and capex acceleration without corresponding improvement in revenue drivers, margins or future guidance.

5. Test earnings quality and cash conversion
Net income and diluted EPS are accrual measures. Free cash flow subtracts cash capital spending and can therefore fall during a major infrastructure cycle even when reported earnings are strong. Compare, for each quarter:
- Revenue growth with operating-income growth.
- Net income with operating cash flow.
- Operating cash flow with free cash flow after capex.
- Legal charges and severance with the equivalent expense and cash impact disclosed for the period.
- Capex paid with the remaining full-year guidance range.
Meta’s 2025 net income and EPS establish profitability, but those annual figures do not by themselves show how the 2026 infrastructure program is affecting cash. A quarter with strong EPS and compressed free cash flow is not automatically poor: it may reflect deliberate capacity investment. Conversely, strong free cash flow can look reassuring while underinvestment risks future service capacity. The decision depends on whether later revenue, engagement and pricing validate the spend.

Meta’s advertising engine is primarily associated with the Family of Apps, while Reality Labs has a different investment and loss profile. When reviewing segment results, keep the operating businesses separate from the infrastructure and AI spending that can support several products at once. Do not treat a consolidated revenue increase as proof that every segment is improving, and do not attribute all consolidated cost growth to Reality Labs when management identifies infrastructure, cloud and technical hiring as major 2026 drivers.

7. Record guidance changes instead of relying on memory
Guidance is a time series. Save the publication date, range, midpoint and definition each time Meta updates it.
| Guidance snapshot | Capital-expenditure range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier full-year 2025 release | $115 billion-$135 billion | Historical baseline for the 2025 spending plan. |
| Prior outlook referenced in the Q2 2026 CFO commentary | $125 billion-$145 billion | Benchmark that the latest Q2 2026 range was narrowed against. |
| Q2 2026 release | $130 billion-$145 billion | Current full-year 2026 range in that release, including finance-lease principal payments. |
Also record full-year 2026 expenses of $165 billion to $169 billion from the Q2 2026 update. A raised capex range can indicate stronger expected demand for compute or a decision to accelerate capacity; a raised expense range can reflect hiring, depreciation or cloud usage. The interpretation depends on the accompanying revenue and margin outlook.
8. Account for measurement limits
Meta cautions that geographic and advertising metrics are estimates and can be affected by data limitations, methodology changes and technical errors. That warning applies to how you interpret location mix, impressions, average price and year-over-year comparisons.

- Do not claim that one reported driver explains all revenue movement.
- Use multi-quarter trends and compare definitions before calculating changes.
- Flag methodology changes in your notes rather than mixing old and new series without qualification.
- Treat small differences between rounded percentages as inconclusive.
- Keep the reported period, geography and metric definition beside every number.
These limitations do not make the figures unusable; they define the confidence level of conclusions drawn from them.
9. A worked reading of Q2 2026
Apply the framework to the reported quarter in sequence:
- Scale: Revenue was $60.80 billion, up 28% year over year, with Q3 guided to $61-$64 billion.
- Advertising: Impressions grew 14% and average price per ad grew 12%, indicating positive volume and monetization contributions.
- Engagement: June DAP was 3.60 billion, up 3%, so monetization growth was materially faster than user growth.
- Costs: Expenses reached $42.03 billion, up 55%, including $2.40 billion of legal charges and $1.18 billion of severance.
- Investment: Capex was $31.08 billion, against a full-year 2026 range of $130-$145 billion.
- Quality check: Review operating income and free cash flow before concluding that the 28% revenue growth translated into proportional shareholder returns.
The result is a balanced interpretation: demand and monetization were strong, but the cost and infrastructure cycle was substantially larger than revenue growth. Whether that trade-off is attractive depends on subsequent margin, cash-flow and guidance trends.
10. Checklist for the next earnings report
- Copy reported revenue, year-over-year growth and the next-quarter range.
- Update the annual revenue, net-income and diluted-EPS baseline.
- Record ad-impression growth and average-price-per-ad growth separately.
- Update DAP with its exact measurement month or quarter.
- List infrastructure, depreciation, cloud, technical compensation, legal and severance commentary.
- Capture quarterly capex, full-year capex guidance and the definition including or excluding finance-lease principal payments.
- Capture full-year expense guidance and the change from the prior range.
- Compare operating income, net income, operating cash flow and free cash flow.
- Review Family of Apps and Reality Labs separately where segment figures are provided.
- Annotate any methodology, data-availability or technical-error warning before comparing periods.
How to form the investment conclusion
A defensible conclusion states both the operating result and the investment cost. For example: revenue growth is supported by rising impressions and prices, while DAP growth is slower; expenses and capex are rising faster than revenue because Meta is expanding infrastructure and technical capacity; the next test is whether future guidance, operating margins and free cash flow improve enough to justify that build-out. This wording ties the verdict to observable metrics instead of assuming that AI spending will automatically produce a return.
