To judge whether a non-banking financial company (NBFC) is creating durable earnings, analyze three linked measures: how quickly its loan book grows, how much net interest margin (NIM) it earns after funding costs, and whether asset quality is deteriorating as it expands. A high growth rate or high NIM is not automatically favorable. The useful conclusion comes from reconciling growth with product mix, capital and liquidity; reconciling NIM with yields, funding costs and credit costs; and reading GNPA, NNPA, provisions and early delinquencies together.
The framework below gives you comparable definitions, formulas, a repeatable two-company comparison process and red flags that headline ratios can conceal.

| How fast is lending expanding? | Gross loan book, advances or AUM growth | The quantity of balance-sheet expansion | AUM may include co-lending or off-balance-sheet assets; acquisitions, securitisations and write-offs can change the balance without matching disbursements |
| Is lending priced profitably? | NIM = net interest income divided by average total assets | The recurring spread earned from assets after interest expense | Companies may use different average-asset conventions, and a spread-on-loans figure is not the same as RBI’s NIM formula |
| Is the book becoming riskier? | GNPA, NNPA, PCR, slippages, roll rates and recoveries | Current impairment, provisioning protection and emerging stress | Write-offs, sales, restructuring, securitisation or a changing denominator can make a headline ratio look better without reducing underlying risk |
Do not select a “winner” from one column. Faster growth with a higher NIM can be attractive if early delinquency, credit cost, capital and liquidity remain controlled. Slower growth with stronger coverage and stable collections may be the safer model in a stressed cycle.

How to measure loan-book growth correctly
Choose one balance measure and keep it consistent
Use the reported gross loan book, advances or assets under management (AUM), but label the measure precisely. On-book loans are assets recognized on the NBFC’s balance sheet. AUM can include loans originated under co-lending arrangements or other managed assets that are not fully on the balance sheet. Portfolio purchases, securitisation and partial sell-downs can move AUM and on-book loans in opposite directions.
For year-over-year growth, calculate:
Growth = (closing balance ÷ prior-year closing balance) − 1
For a multi-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR), calculate:
CAGR = (ending balance ÷ beginning balance)^(1 ÷ number of years) − 1
Use closing balances from the same reporting perimeter. If one company reports consolidated AUM and the other reports standalone advances, the percentages are not directly comparable until you reconcile the perimeter.

Reconcile the balance change
A change in the closing loan balance is the result of several flows, not just new originations. Build a bridge from the opening balance to the closing balance that identifies:
- Gross disbursements and portfolio purchases.
- Scheduled repayments and customer prepayments.
- Write-offs and recoveries on previously written-off accounts.
- Loans sold, securitised or transferred under co-lending arrangements.
- Acquisitions or transfers that alter the reported portfolio.
- Foreign-exchange or other presentation effects where applicable.
If management reports strong disbursements but the book grows slowly, repayments, prepayments or sell-downs may be large. Conversely, a sudden balance increase without a similar rise in disbursements may reflect an acquisition or purchased portfolio rather than organic origination.

Headline growth can hide a concentration that has not yet seasoned. Split the loan book by:
- Product, such as vehicle finance, housing, microfinance, consumer credit or business loans.
- Geography and individual regions with different employment, crop, weather or regulatory risks.
- Borrower type, employer or industry.
- Ticket size and borrower income band.
- Secured versus unsecured exposure.
- Origination vintage, so newer cohorts are separated from seasoned loans.
Compare each segment’s growth with its delinquency and credit-cost trend. A rapidly expanding unsecured product can lift reported yield and NIM while adding collection expense and future losses. A secured book may show lower loss severity, but collateral value, enforceability and realization time still matter.
Test whether growth is financeable
Expansion consumes capital and liquidity. Compare loan growth with internal capital generation, regulatory capital adequacy, risk-weighted assets, leverage and external funding capacity. Review the maturity profile of borrowings against expected collections. A book financed heavily with short-term commercial paper or other near-term liabilities can face rollover pressure even when asset quality is currently sound.

Look for management’s stated funding plan, diversified lenders and access to bank loans, bonds, deposits where permitted, commercial paper and securitisation. A growth rate materially above internally generated capital requires a clear plan for equity, retained earnings or other eligible capital; otherwise leverage can rise faster than loss-absorption capacity.
How to calculate and interpret NIM
Use the RBI definition first
The Reserve Bank of India publishes the formula:
Net Interest Margin (NIM) = Net Interest Income ÷ Average Total Assets
Document the company’s stated period and denominator. “Average assets” may mean a simple average of opening and closing balances or a daily average. A reported NIM based on average total assets should not be compared with a spread-on-loans measure that divides interest spread by average earning loans. If a company provides both, keep the measures separate.
Build a four-part NIM bridge
Asset yield
Asset yield is interest income divided by average interest-earning assets. Higher-yield products often carry higher borrower risk, operating cost and collection intensity. A rising yield is therefore not evidence of improved economics unless losses and expenses are stable. Check whether the yield increase came from product mix, repricing, late fees or a larger share of unsecured lending.
Funding cost
Funding cost is interest expense divided by average borrowings or other interest-bearing liabilities. Track the rates and maturity mix of bank loans, bonds, commercial paper and deposits where the NBFC is permitted to accept them. Rising market rates may reprice liabilities before a fixed-rate loan book can reprice, compressing NIM. Longer-tenor funding can cost more initially but reduce rollover and repricing risk.

Mix and repricing
Map fixed-rate and floating-rate assets against fixed-rate and floating-rate liabilities. Note the benchmark, reset frequency and lag between liability-cost changes and customer-rate changes. A company with a high share of floating-rate assets may protect NIM when resets are passed through promptly; a company with a large fixed-rate book may experience a temporary squeeze when funding costs rise.
Non-accrual income and fees
Non-performing assets may stop accruing interest, reducing reported interest income even when the contractual rate is unchanged. Keep fee income separate from net interest income unless the company’s accounting presentation clearly includes it. Origination fees, foreclosure charges or securitisation gains can lift total revenue without representing a recurring lending spread.
Read NIM with operating expense and credit cost
NIM is only one layer of profitability. Compare it with operating expenses, credit cost and return on assets. A higher NIM that requires expensive collections or produces rising impairment charges may generate less sustainable profit than a lower NIM on a cleaner, more efficient book. Also examine whether a recent NIM increase coincides with a larger unsecured share or rising 30–60-day delinquencies; that combination can indicate riskier origination rather than durable pricing power.
How to analyze asset quality beyond GNPA
Understand when an account becomes non-performing
RBI prudential guidance says an asset becomes non-performing when it ceases to generate income. For a term loan, the master circular defines an NPA when interest or principal is overdue for more than 90 days. RBI directions for NBFCs in the middle layer (NBFC-ML) similarly use more than 90 days overdue for specified interest, instalment, bill, lease or other dues. Confirm the applicable regulatory layer and accounting policy when comparing companies.
GNPA: impaired exposure before eligible deductions
Gross non-performing assets (GNPA) are gross NPAs divided by the relevant gross loan or advance base. GNPA shows the stock of impaired exposure before eligible provisions and other deductions. A stable GNPA can still conceal stress if the denominator expands rapidly or if older bad loans are written off.

NNPA: residual exposure after permitted deductions
Net non-performing assets (NNPA) are the residual after the deductions and provisions permitted by the applicable rules. RBI’s disclosure template expresses the ratio as net NPAs divided by net advances. NNPA is useful for estimating the exposure left after recognized protection, but it depends on provisioning policy, collateral eligibility and the deductions allowed. Compare the underlying gross amount and provisions, not just the net percentage.
Provision coverage ratio
Provision coverage ratio (PCR) is generally provisions held against NPAs divided by gross NPAs, using the company’s disclosed convention. Higher coverage usually means more loss absorption before capital is affected. It is not a guarantee of recovery: compare PCR with collateral quality, collateral haircuts, write-offs, recoveries and the age of the impaired pool. A falling NNPA accompanied by a falling PCR can mean the apparent improvement came from lower provisions rather than better collections.
Slippages, roll rates and recoveries are leading signals
Track fresh standard-to-NPA additions, often called slippages, each quarter. Review movement from 30–60 days past due to 60–90 days past due, because roll rates can worsen before GNPA rises. Measure recoveries from written-off accounts and the cash actually collected after a sale or restructuring. A lower GNPA with high slippages and weak recoveries is not a clean result; it may simply reflect aggressive cures, sales or write-offs.

List restructured loans separately and ask how many are current under concessions versus genuinely cured. Reconcile write-offs to opening GNPA, recoveries and closing GNPA. If reported asset quality improves only after large write-offs, the risk has been recognized but not necessarily eliminated; the economic loss may already have reduced capital.
Use RBI’s NPA ageing categories
RBI classifies NPAs as sub-standard, doubtful or loss. A sub-standard asset has remained non-performing for no more than 12 months. It becomes doubtful after more than 12 months in the sub-standard category. A growing doubtful or loss bucket generally indicates older, harder-to-recover stress even if the total GNPA ratio is unchanged.

Sector figures help establish direction, but they are not universal pass-or-fail levels for an individual NBFC. The following numbers come from RBI reports and refer to the stated dates and sector groupings.
| Measure | RBI-reported figure | Date or comparison | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provision coverage ratio | 65.1% | End-March 2023, up from 51.5% at end-March 2020 | Indicates stronger aggregate provisioning protection over that period; compare each company’s convention and collateral profile |
| GNPA | 4.1% | NBFC sector, end-September 2023 | Use as historical sector context, not as a target that every business model should meet |
| NNPA | 1.5% | NBFC sector, end-September 2023 | Interpret with PCR, write-offs and the applicable net-asset denominator |
| Performing-loan delinquency | 6.1% | End-March 2023, down from 12.3% at end-March 2021 | Shows sector improvement in the cited series; check the definition and portfolio scope before comparing with company data |
| Standard assets with no overdues | 93.9% | End-March 2023, up from 87.7% at end-March 2021 | Supports the direction of improving current performance in that series, but does not remove product or regional concentration risk |
| NBFC-ML GNPA | 3.3% | End-March 2025, down from 5% according to an RBI trend-report extract | Use only as dated directional context; the extract is not a universal benchmark |
| NBFC-UL NNPA deterioration | Attributed primarily to lower provisions | End-March 2025, according to the same RBI trend-report extract | Illustrates why NNPA must be read with provisioning, rather than treated as a standalone improvement signal |
A repeatable two-NBFC comparison method
- Align the reporting perimeter. Record the reporting date, standalone or consolidated basis, regulatory layer and whether each figure is AUM, on-book loans or advances. Note co-lending, securitisation and portfolio-transfer treatment.
- Normalize growth. Calculate year-over-year growth and, where possible, CAGR from identical starting and ending dates. Build the opening-to-closing bridge and identify acquisitions, sell-downs, repayments, write-offs and prepayments.
- Compare the growth mix. Put product, geography, borrower type, ticket size, secured share and vintage in one table. Flag any segment growing materially faster than the total book.
- Reconcile NIM definitions. Capture net interest income, average-asset convention, asset yield, funding cost and repricing characteristics. Exclude fee income from the NIM comparison unless both companies clearly include it in the same way.
- Layer in efficiency and credit cost. Compare operating expense, credit cost and return on assets. A high NIM with high collection expense or impairment may be less durable than a lower NIM with controlled costs.
- Build the asset-quality stack. Compare GNPA, NNPA, PCR, slippages, roll rates, recoveries, restructurings, write-offs and NPA ageing. Ask what changed the denominator whenever a ratio moves sharply.
- Test concentration. Review regional, employer, borrower-group, sector and collateral concentrations. Aggregate ratios can remain calm while one concentrated pocket weakens.
- Check capital and liquidity. Compare capital adequacy, leverage, risk-weighted-asset growth, maturity gaps, liquid assets and funding diversification. Stress the effect of a period in which wholesale funding cannot be rolled over.
- Write a trade-off conclusion. State explicitly whether the faster-growing company compensates for weaker early delinquencies, or whether the slower-growing company’s coverage and funding profile justify its lower growth. Avoid declaring a universally safer NBFC without specifying the risk you are prioritizing.
Red flags that deserve a deeper review
- Growth outruns capital generation: the loan book expands materially faster than retained earnings and there is no clear equity or eligible-capital plan.
- NIM rises with early stress: unsecured exposure, 30–60-day delinquencies or collection costs increase at the same time as NIM.
- GNPA is stable only after cleanup actions: heavy write-offs, loan sales, restructuring or denominator changes do most of the work.
- NNPA falls while PCR falls: the apparent improvement may reflect less provisioning protection. The RBI’s 2024-25 trend-report extract specifically associated NBFC-UL NNPA deterioration with lower provisions.
- AUM and on-book loans diverge: co-lending, securitisation or portfolio purchases make the reported growth rate difficult to interpret.
- Concentration is hidden in the aggregate: one region, employer, borrower group or collateral type accounts for a large share of exposure.
- Short-term funding supports long-term assets: maturity gaps or dependence on commercial paper could force asset sales during a liquidity shock.
- Older NPAs accumulate: the doubtful or loss category grows even when total GNPA is flat.
How to form the final judgment
A durable NBFC model normally shows growth that is supported by capital and diversified funding; NIM that can be explained by sustainable asset yield, funding cost and repricing; and asset quality in which slippages, roll rates and credit cost are stable or improving. The opposite pattern—rapid expansion, NIM lifted by riskier products, and improving headline NPAs only after write-offs or lower provisions—deserves a more conservative assessment.
