The reliable way to analyze an IT-services company’s quarterly results is to connect five things: the source of revenue growth, the durability of that revenue, the economics of delivery, conversion of earnings into cash, and the credibility of management’s outlook. A headline revenue or earnings beat is only the starting point.

Read the filing and management discussion alongside the earnings release, investor presentation and call transcript. Rebuild growth by service line, geography, currency and contract type; reconcile GAAP with adjusted figures; test working capital and accounting judgments; then update valuation using the quarter’s balance-sheet and cash-flow data. The process below turns those checks into an invest-or-wait decision.

1. Start with the primary documents

Use the same document set for every company and every quarter so that comparisons remain consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Quarterly filing and MD&A: Treat this as the control document. It contains segment definitions, accounting policies, footnotes, unusual charges, contract balances, debt, stock compensation and legally required risk disclosures. Kyndryl’s 10-Q, for example, explains results for four geographic segments—United States, Japan, Principal Markets and Strategic Markets—and shows how workforce-rebalancing charges, impairment, taxes and a divestiture-related gain affected the quarter.
  2. Earnings release: Use it for the concise income statement, cash-flow highlights, operating metrics and management’s stated outlook. Cisco’s quarterly-results format illustrates the useful combination of headline results, GAAP-to-non-GAAP reconciliations, cash flow, performance obligations and guidance.
  3. Investor presentation: Capture the operating KPIs management emphasizes, such as bookings, annual recurring revenue, backlog, utilization, attrition, cloud or security mix and regional growth. Record definitions exactly; a company’s “bookings” or “recurring revenue” may not match another company’s.
  4. Call transcript: Look for explanations that are not prominent in the filing: changes in client budgets, sales-cycle length, pricing, subcontractor use, hiring constraints, large-deal timing and the assumptions behind guidance. Separate a disclosed fact from management’s interpretation.

Create a one-page record with the quarter-end date, fiscal year, reporting currency, share count, debt and cash, segment definitions, non-GAAP adjustments and every KPI definition. Do not mix a company’s fiscal quarter with a calendar-quarter comparison without labeling the difference.

2. Build a growth table that explains the headline

Calculate both year-over-year (YoY) and sequential growth. YoY reduces seasonality; sequential growth identifies acceleration, deceleration and deal timing. Use the same currency basis throughout the table and show reported and constant-currency changes when the company provides them.

Line to capture Why it matters Questions to answer
Total revenue Sets the scale of growth but says nothing about its durability. What was YoY and sequential growth? Was the comparison affected by an acquisition, divestiture or a 53-week period?
Service line Separates managed services, maintenance, subscriptions, consulting, systems integration and project work. Which lines grew? Which carry higher or lower margins?
Geography Reveals regional demand, currency exposure and concentration. Did growth come from one country or broad-based demand?
Customer vertical Shows exposure to public sector, financial services, health care, manufacturing or technology spending cycles. Are the fastest-growing verticals recurring or project-driven?
Contract type Distinguishes recurring work from one-time projects and fixed-fee risk. Did the mix shift toward time-and-materials, fixed fee, subscription or managed service?
Currency basis Prevents exchange-rate movements from being mistaken for operating growth. What was reported growth versus constant-currency growth?

Itron’s reporting demonstrates the discipline required: it presents reported, foreign-exchange and constant-currency changes. Recalculate the difference yourself when possible. A business growing 8% in reported currency but 3% in constant currency has a different operating story from one growing 8% on both measures.

For each segment, calculate (current-quarter revenue ÷ comparable prior-period revenue) − 1. Keep acquisitions, disposals and reclassifications in a separate column rather than treating them as organic growth. If management does not disclose a requested split, mark it “not stated” instead of inferring it from a total.

3. Test whether revenue is recurring, visible and collectible

Separate recurring services from project work

Managed services, maintenance, subscriptions and support usually provide more repeatable revenue than a large implementation completed once. Project and consulting revenue can still be attractive, but it is more exposed to client approvals, utilization, change orders and sales-cycle timing. Calculate the percentage of revenue in each category when disclosed, and track the mix over several quarters rather than judging one quarter.

Understand ARR, RPO and deferred revenue

These measures improve visibility but are not interchangeable. Itron defines annual recurring revenue (ARR) as “an annualized calculation of quarterly recurring revenue” and says it reflects the ability to attract, retain and expand customers. Itron reported ARR of $417 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. ARR is a run-rate measure, not revenue already recognized in the income statement; it can change when customers expand, cancel or alter contract terms.

Remaining performance obligations (RPO) represent contracted work that has not yet been recognized. Cisco reported $46.7 billion of RPO in fiscal 2026. RPO can include obligations that will be delivered over multiple periods and may depend on customer options or conditions in the contract. Read the timing disclosure before treating the balance as near-term sales.

Deferred services revenue is cash or billings received before the associated service is recognized. It can support future reported revenue, but it is not the same as ARR or RPO. Track additions, releases and the portion expected within twelve months.

Measure What it represents What it does not prove
ARR An annualized run rate of recurring revenue, using the company’s stated definition. That the amount is recognized revenue, contracted for a fixed term or collectible without churn.
RPO Contracted performance obligations not yet recognized as revenue. That all obligations convert to revenue in the next quarter or carry the same margin.
Deferred revenue Amounts billed or collected before revenue recognition. That future cash collection will increase; the cash may already have been received.
Bookings New orders or contract value recorded under the company’s definition. That delivery capacity, pricing or customer spending will support the stated value.

Check churn, renewal rates, net retention, contract duration and customer concentration where disclosed. A rising ARR number with falling renewal or expansion metrics deserves an explanation. Conversely, stable recurring revenue can cushion a temporary decline in discretionary projects.

4. Explain every margin movement

Track gross margin, operating margin and operating-expense rates at company and segment level. Then write a bridge from the prior period. A useful bridge has separate lines for:

  • Pricing and contractual pass-throughs.
  • Service and customer mix.
  • Employee utilization and bench time.
  • Wage inflation, hiring costs and subcontractor rates.
  • Delivery productivity, automation and offshore or nearshore mix.
  • Acquisitions, divestitures and integration costs.
  • Restructuring, impairment, litigation, tax and other one-time items.

Do not accept “margin expanded” as a complete explanation. Ask whether the improvement came from repeatable delivery economics or a temporary mix benefit. A fixed-fee project can show strong revenue growth while creating a future loss if estimated costs rise; inspect changes in estimates and loss-making contracts in the notes.

Reconcile GAAP and non-GAAP results line by line. Cisco reports both GAAP and non-GAAP margins and provides reconciliations. Record the adjustment categories, their size and whether they recur. Repeated “one-time” restructuring or acquisition charges are economically recurring even if excluded from adjusted earnings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kyndryl’s quarter illustrates why a bridge is essential: net loss reflected workforce-rebalancing charges, impairment, higher selling and administrative expenses, taxes and a divestiture-related gain. A reported loss or profit cannot be interpreted correctly without identifying those components and deciding which belong in a sustainable forecast.

5. Follow earnings into cash

Compare operating cash flow (OCF) with net income and calculate OCF conversion as operating cash flow ÷ net income when net income is positive. Also calculate free cash flow using the company’s stated definition and keep capital expenditure assumptions consistent.

Inspect the working-capital lines that can delay or accelerate cash:

  • Accounts receivable: Rising receivables faster than revenue can signal slower collection, disputed invoices or a large quarter-end shipment.
  • Contract assets: Revenue recognized before the right to invoice can consume cash until billing milestones are reached.
  • Deferred revenue and contract liabilities: Billings or cash received before delivery can support future revenue, but releases may reduce the balance later.
  • Payables and accrued expenses: A temporary increase can boost OCF and reverse when suppliers are paid or bonuses settle.
  • Capitalized costs: Capitalized commissions or implementation costs defer expense and require later amortization.

Dell stated that OCF in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 was $4.1 billion, driven by revenue growth and profitability and partly offset by working-capital dynamics. Use that type of disclosure as a prompt to quantify the offset: determine which receivable, inventory, payable or contract-balance movements caused the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quarter with rising earnings but falling OCF is not automatically a problem; growth can consume working capital. It does require a specific explanation, a reasonable reversal timetable and evidence that collections and billing are functioning normally. Persistent divergence across several quarters is a stronger warning than one seasonal movement.

6. Read the accounting notes for timing and estimation risk

IT-services contracts often move revenue between periods through milestones, estimates and contract modifications. Dell notes that a substantial portion of services revenue is deferred and recognized over time, so services growth can differ from product growth.

CGI states that fixed-fee consulting and systems-integration revenue is recognized over time using the percentage-of-completion method when the contract has no alternative use and the company has an enforceable right to payment for work completed. Under this method, changes in estimated total cost, scope or completion can change current-quarter revenue and margin. Review:

  • Changes in estimates of contract revenue, cost or completion percentage.
  • Loss provisions for contracts expected to be unprofitable.
  • Contract assets and liabilities and their expected conversion.
  • Receivable aging, allowance changes and customer disputes.
  • Goodwill and acquired-intangible balances, impairment tests and assumptions.
  • Capitalized implementation, commission and software costs.
  • Stock-based compensation and other non-cash adjustments.
  • Tax-rate changes, valuation allowances and discrete tax items.

Compare the current policy wording with prior filings. A change in a definition, estimate or contract classification can make a trend appear stronger or weaker without an equivalent change in operations.

7. Check whether people and delivery capacity can support growth

Services revenue depends on skilled employees being available when contracts require them. Track total headcount, billable headcount, utilization, attrition, net hiring, wage increases and subcontractor dependence where disclosed.

Low utilization can depress margins even while bookings rise. High utilization may improve the current quarter but create delivery risk, overtime and wage pressure in the next one. Heavy subcontractor use can provide flexibility but may reduce gross margin and control over quality. CGI identifies the ability to hire and retain qualified IT professionals as a factor affecting future cash flows.

Ask management:

  • Is hiring keeping pace with signed work?
  • Are scarce skills being filled with higher-cost contractors?
  • Did attrition change by geography or practice?
  • How much of the margin outlook assumes productivity gains?
  • Can delivery be shifted among regions without harming customer commitments?

When a company reports bookings growth but lowers its margin or revenue outlook, capacity constraints, delayed starts or underpriced work may be the link. Do not treat bookings as valuable growth until the company demonstrates delivery.

8. Test guidance against observable evidence

Put the new quarterly and full-year guidance beside the prior guide, actual results, bookings or RPO, pipeline commentary, margin assumptions and cash-flow expectations. Record the midpoint and range, then calculate the implied growth and margin change from the latest reported period.

Cisco’s results page provides an example of explicit ranges for revenue, gross margin, operating margin and EPS, alongside warnings that demand, competition, technology, acquisitions, cyber incidents, regulation and currency can change outcomes. Use the assumptions and risk language to identify what must go right for the midpoint to be achieved.

Guidance check Evidence to compare
Revenue range Organic growth, constant-currency growth, backlog or RPO timing, renewal rates and sales-cycle commentary.
Margin range Utilization, wage and subcontractor costs, mix, pricing, productivity and restructuring charges.
EPS range Operating profit, share count, interest expense, tax assumptions and non-GAAP adjustments.
Cash-flow outlook Receivables, contract assets, deferred revenue, capital expenditure and seasonal working capital.

Classify guidance as raised, maintained or reduced, and distinguish a change caused by currency or an acquisition from an organic change. Compare management’s prior guidance with the result eventually delivered. A pattern of conservative beats can be positive, but repeated misses indicate that the forecast process or operating model is unreliable.

9. Stress-test the risks in your model

Translate disclosed risks into numerical scenarios instead of listing them abstractly. At minimum, model:

  • Slower client IT spending and longer sales cycles.
  • Lower pricing or a shift toward lower-margin work.
  • Higher wages, subcontractor costs or bench time.
  • Customer or geographic concentration loss.
  • Currency depreciation in major delivery or billing regions.
  • Cyber incidents, outages, regulation or contract penalties.
  • Acquisition integration delays, dilution or impairment.
  • Technology changes that reduce demand for an existing service.

CGI specifically highlights sales-cycle length, technology trends, hiring and retention, and goodwill-impairment assumptions. Build a bear case that changes only the assumptions supported by those risks. For example, reduce revenue growth, widen days sales outstanding, lower operating margin and increase restructuring or impairment costs; then observe the effect on free cash flow, leverage and valuation.

Comparison axis What to normalize Why it affects the decision
Growth Organic, reported and constant-currency YoY and sequential growth. Separates operating momentum from acquisitions and exchange rates.
Visibility ARR, renewal or retention metrics, RPO, backlog and deferred revenue. Shows how much future work is contracted or recurring.
Margins GAAP and adjusted gross and operating margins, with adjustment categories. Reveals delivery economics and the cost of exclusions.
Capacity Utilization, attrition, headcount growth and subcontractor mix. Tests whether the workforce can deliver signed work profitably.
Cash conversion OCF and free cash flow relative to earnings, plus working-capital movements. Distinguishes accounting profit from cash generation.
Concentration Largest customers, verticals, countries and currencies. Measures the effect of one client, sector or region weakening.
Balance sheet Cash, debt, net debt, maturities and acquisition obligations. Determines resilience and the room for investment or buybacks.
Forecast record Prior guidance versus actual revenue, margin, EPS and cash flow. Tests management’s credibility.
Accounting complexity Percentage-of-completion work, contract assets, capitalization and impairment exposure. Identifies earnings that depend heavily on estimates.
Valuation Forward earnings, EV/EBIT, EV/EBITDA and free-cash-flow yield. Links price to sustainable growth, margins and risk.

Use a consistent peer set and the same currency and fiscal-period conventions. If a peer does not disclose a metric, mark it “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an estimate that makes the comparison look precise.

11. Recalculate valuation after the quarter

Update market capitalization using the latest diluted share count and share price. Add debt and other relevant claims, subtract cash and arrive at enterprise value. Recalculate:

  • Forward P/E: price divided by your forward diluted EPS.
  • EV/EBIT: enterprise value divided by normalized operating income.
  • EV/EBITDA: enterprise value divided by EBITDA, with a clear treatment of stock compensation and leases.
  • Free-cash-flow yield: forward free cash flow divided by market capitalization.

Use the quarter to change the numerator and denominator, not merely the earnings estimate. A cash build can lower enterprise value even when the share price is unchanged; a debt-funded acquisition can do the opposite. Reconcile reported and adjusted earnings before using a multiple, and show how the multiple changes under your bear, base and bull cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The multiple is justified only by the quality of the forecast: durable growth, recurring revenue, defensible margins, balance-sheet strength and cash conversion. A single-quarter beat should not determine a purchase when the valuation already assumes several years of flawless execution.

12. A repeatable quarterly decision checklist

  1. Download the filing, MD&A, release, presentation and transcript.
  2. Record fiscal dates, currency, share count, debt, cash and segment definitions.
  3. Calculate YoY and sequential revenue growth by every disclosed dimension.
  4. Separate reported, constant-currency, acquired and organic growth.
  5. Classify revenue as recurring, subscription, maintenance, managed service, consulting or project work.
  6. Capture ARR, renewal, retention, bookings, RPO and deferred-revenue definitions and balances.
  7. Bridge gross and operating margins to pricing, mix, utilization, labor, subcontractors and one-time items.
  8. Reconcile GAAP and non-GAAP results and decide which adjustments are truly non-recurring.
  9. Compare net income with OCF and free cash flow; explain every major working-capital movement.
  10. Review revenue-recognition estimates, contract losses, receivables, capitalization, goodwill and stock compensation.
  11. Check headcount, utilization, attrition, hiring and delivery capacity.
  12. Compare new guidance with prior guidance and test its assumptions against bookings, margins and cash flow.
  13. Run downside scenarios for demand, pricing, currency, capacity, concentration, cyber and impairment risks.
  14. Update market capitalization, enterprise value and valuation multiples.
  15. Write the investment conclusion in one sentence: what must happen for the stock to work, and what evidence would invalidate that thesis?

What a high-quality quarter looks like

The strongest pattern is broad organic and constant-currency growth, increasing recurring revenue or contracted visibility, stable or improving delivery margins, workforce capacity that matches demand, operating cash flow that broadly follows earnings, and guidance supported by bookings and realistic assumptions.

The weakest pattern is headline growth driven by currency or acquisition, falling renewals, margin expansion caused only by temporary mix, rising contract assets and receivables, repeated “one-time” charges, strained staffing, reduced guidance and a valuation that assumes recovery before the evidence appears.
