The exact controls depend on the app, device and publication: adjustable text can often reflow, while a scanned page or fixed-layout magazine may not.
Start in the publication’s reading settings
Open the issue or book and tap the page if the toolbar is hidden. Look for a display, appearance or reading-settings control. Change one setting at a time, then read a few paragraphs at your usual viewing distance and in the lighting where you normally read.
There is no single font size or brightness level that suits every reader or room. The official help pages below describe available controls; they do not establish a universally comfortable setting or promise that a particular adjustment will resolve eye discomfort.
Adjust text size and appearance
Apple Books on iPhone
Open the book, tap the menu, then choose Themes & Settings. Use the large and small A controls to change text size. The panel also documents font, bold text, spacing, justification and margins, along with appearance and brightness options. The available choices may depend on the publication. Kindle app on Android or iOS
Tap near the top of an open book to show the toolbar, then open Aa reading settings. Kindle’s app guidance lists font size and type, spacing, margins and alignment among its reading controls. Visual changes depend on the platform and whether the publication supports them. Amazon’s Kindle app reading-settings help.
Google Play Books on Android
Tap the page, choose Display options, then open Text for text controls. Google documents font-size and related display adjustments there. Android instructions may not match the iPhone or iPad app; Google provides separate iOS instructions. For the Android steps, see Google Play Books Help.

Set brightness and page color separately
Brightness changes the display’s light output; page color changes the background appearance. Try these separately so you can tell which adjustment helps in your room. Apple Books and Kindle document in-app brightness controls. Google Play Books for Android places brightness and color choices under Display options > Lighting; its documented color schemes include Light, Sepia and Dark. Options and labels can differ by app version and device.
Choose a layout that suits the publication
Depending on the app and book, layout controls may include margins, line spacing, text alignment, scrolling, orientation, and a one- or two-page view. In Apple Books, page-turn style, scrolling and layout-related settings are in Themes & Settings. Kindle’s Aa menu includes controls such as continuous scrolling, margins, alignment and, on some devices, orientation lock. Google Play Books for Android documents Auto, one-page and two-page layouts, but notes that not all books offer more than one page layout.

Try one layout change at a time. For example, switch between page turns and continuous scrolling, or between one- and two-page display where available. Keep the option that makes it easiest to follow the text and images without awkwardly moving or resizing the page.

A magazine distributed as reflowable text can adapt its line breaks and page flow when you change text size. A scanned page, image, PDF or other fixed-layout document is different: its words may remain part of the page image, so increasing text size may not enlarge the words independently or rearrange the page like ordinary text.

Apple distinguishes PDFs and other fixed-layout documents in its scrolling instructions, while Amazon notes that visual adjustments depend on book support. If text controls have little or no effect, check whether the issue is fixed-layout and use only the zoom or scrolling options that the specific app and format provide. Do not assume every magazine supports the same adjustments.

Quick adjustment sequence
- Open the issue and tap the page to reveal its toolbar.
- Find reading or display settings: Apple Books uses Themes & Settings, Kindle uses Aa, and Google Play Books for Android uses Display options.
- Adjust text size until it is easy to read at your normal viewing distance, if the publication supports adjustable text.
- Set brightness for the room, then try a different page color or appearance separately if offered.
- Test layout controls such as spacing, margins, scrolling or page count, changing one at a time.
- Check the result in the actual issue. If text does not reflow, treat it as a fixed-layout page and use format-specific viewing controls.
Why settings may be missing or behave differently
- App and device differences: menu names and available controls vary between iOS, Android and dedicated devices, and can change with app releases.
- Publication support: some books and magazines do not permit every font or layout adjustment.
- Fixed-layout content: scans, image pages and some PDFs do not behave like reflowable text.
- Different platform instructions: follow the help page for the device you use rather than assuming Android and iOS menus are identical.
