Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no single PS5 brightness setting that works for every horror game, TV or monitor. For clearer dark scenes without flattening their mood, check the display and PS5 HDR setup first, calibrate HDR if you use it, then make small adjustments in the game itself while checking both shadow and highlight detail.
Why the same setting can look different across setups
PlayStation describes HDR as delivering “a higher contrast—or larger color and brightness range—than Standard Dynamic Range (SDR).” Whether that produces the image you want depends on the display and the rest of your home entertainment setup; PS5 HDR capability alone does not guarantee identical results on every screen. See PlayStation Support’s HDR guidance.

Start by checking your TV or monitor’s manual for HDR support and its recommended HDR or game picture mode. Display menus and behavior vary by model, so avoid applying picture-setting values intended for a different screen. If your display does not support HDR, use SDR rather than expecting an HDR setting to add detail.
Choose how the PS5 handles HDR
On the console, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. PlayStation offers two behaviors:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Roam the cursed lands: Awaken as consciousness itself in a realm of death, a world consumed by Necrophosis. Explore freely through its dark macabre landscapes where all things rot and decay eternally. Navigate eerie landscapes, grotesque architecture and haunting visuals that bring Lovecraftian and cosmic horror to life.
- Uncover hidden truths: Delve into evocative narrative poems and unravel the world’s enigmatic backstory while engaging with decayed gods caught in an eternal cycle of death and rebirth.
- Master chilling puzzles: Solve unsettling puzzles as you explore a world consumed by rot. Certain challenges demand brain detachment and possession, while others rely on careful observation. Face gods, eldritch entities, and Lovecraftian beings who have taken refuge here, learning their histories and the horrors they embody. Each environment features minimalist, droning ambience, layered with whispers, distant groans, and echoing cryptic voices that heighten tension and unease.
- Second Awakening: Return to the realm of death in the Necrophosis: Subconsciousness expansion. Explore new landscapes, entities, and story as your journey leads ever deeper. Includes Bonus Game – The Shore: Andrew ventures into the unknown to find his lost daughter, exploring a forbidden island of nightmarish entities and solving puzzles that test his sanity.
- Languages: English in-game voice. English, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and Ukrainian in-game text.
- On When Supported: HDR is used for HDR-supported games and apps; non-HDR content remains in SDR.
- Always On: the console converts non-HDR content to HDR output as well.
PlayStation does not identify Always On as universally better. If you are unsure, On When Supported provides a straightforward way to leave non-HDR material in SDR; compare the options on your display rather than assuming conversion improves every game.
Run the PS5 HDR calibration
With HDR selected, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen instructions. PlayStation describes the adjustment as a way to fine-tune brightness and optimize HDR rendering. It does not provide one target brightness value for every screen, so use the console’s calibration prompts instead of a universal number. More detail is available in PlayStation’s HDR instructions.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Adjust the game’s own image controls
Open the specific game’s display, video or HDR options and follow its instructions. Depending on the title, you may find brightness, gamma, contrast, black-level or visibility-test controls. The labels are not interchangeable across games, so do not assume a slider called “Brightness” changes the same part of the image everywhere.
For example, Naughty Dog’s documentation for The Last of Us Part II Remastered says: “You can use Contrast to adjust the peak brightness in SDR and HDR modes, and Brightness to adjust the grayscale from black-to-white.” That describes this game’s controls, not a general rule for other titles. See Naughty Dog’s control explanation.

Make restrained changes and check a useful scene
- Choose a scene where you need to distinguish objects or paths in shadow, not just a bright menu or opening screen.
- Change one game control at a time, using small increments if the game allows them.
- Check whether important shadow detail becomes visible while bright areas remain readable.
- If dark areas turn gray or the scene loses contrast and depth, reduce the adjustment until the image feels balanced.
This is a practical way to judge the picture, not a published numeric calibration standard. Where a game offers SDR and HDR, compare both on the same display and in the same scene: look at shadow detail, highlights, black level and whether the intended contrast remains. The available official guidance does not establish one mode as best for every horror game.
Leave unrelated output settings alone
RGB Range is not a general brightness control. PlayStation advises changing it only when the HDMI device does not report RGB range correctly. If the image looks wrong, check the display instructions and the console’s video-output guidance before changing it as a visibility fix.

Use other comfort options for separate problems
Visibility and overall comfort are not the same issue. PS5 game presets include options such as performance or resolution mode, camera movement, subtitles and audio, but not every setting is available in every game. These may help with comfort or accessibility, but they do not replace the game’s image calibration. See PlayStation’s guide to game presets.
