To improve a bean-to-cup coffee, adjust the right control: grind size changes how finely the beans are ground, strength or aroma changes the coffee dose or intensity, and temperature changes how hot the machine brews. Settings and directions vary by model, so check your machine’s manual before changing a grinder dial or choosing a menu setting.
What each setting changes
Grind size
Grind size controls the particle size of the coffee. On the Philips machines covered by its support guidance, a finer grind is associated with stronger coffee and a coarser grind with a lighter result. The dial’s direction and scale are not universal. Philips explains that its grinder setting can only be adjusted while the beans are being ground.
Strength, aroma, or taste
This is a separate drink control, not another name for grind size. De’Longhi distinguishes the grinder setting, which changes the grounds’ size, from taste selection, which changes the quantity of coffee used. Control names and available steps differ among machines. De’Longhi’s grinder guidance describes the distinction.
Temperature
Some machines let you choose a temperature level in their menu; the number of levels and the path to the setting depend on the model. If the coffee is too cool, a rinse before brewing and a pre-warmed cup may help. De’Longhi also recommends disabling energy-saving mode if the machine has that option. See De’Longhi’s temperature advice.

Adjust the grinder safely
- Identify your exact machine model. Check its manual for the grinder control, scale, finer/coarser direction, and any instruction about when to turn the dial. Do not assume a particular number or clockwise direction means finer.
- Start preparing a coffee. For the Philips and De’Longhi guidance cited here, the grinder should be running when you make an adjustment. Follow your model’s manual if its procedure differs.
- Move the control by one notch only. Adjust in the direction specified by your manual. Philips warns against turning by more than one notch at a time to avoid damage; De’Longhi likewise advises one notch at a time.
- Brew a few cups before judging. A change may not show fully in the first cup. Philips guidance says to make two to three drinks to experience the difference; De’Longhi also says it can take a few coffees. Follow any more specific timing in your manual.
- Make another small change only if needed. Keep other settings the same while evaluating the result, so you can tell whether the grind change helped.
Change strength separately from grind
If the coffee tastes too weak or too intense but the grind seems suitable, adjust the drink’s strength, aroma, or taste control rather than immediately changing the grinder. On the De’Longhi machines described in its guidance, this control changes the quantity of coffee used, while the grinder alters grounds size. Check your manual for what the setting controls on your model and make one change at a time.
Make coffee hotter
- Look in the manual for the machine’s temperature setting and raise it if the model offers one.
- Run the machine’s rinse function before brewing, if available.
- Pre-warm the cup on the machine’s cup shelf or with hot water.
- If there is an energy-saving mode, check the manual to see whether disabling it affects heating.
These are De’Longhi’s general suggestions for its bean-to-cup machines; exact controls and menu steps vary by model.

Example: De’Longhi ECAM29X.5Y
The ECAM29X.5Y manual gives model-specific instructions that illustrate why it is important not to copy a dial direction from another machine. It says the grinder is factory-set initially and directs users to turn its dial only while the grinder operates at the start of preparation. It says a change may take at least two cups to take effect. For that model, it describes one-click directions toward dial position “7” for slow or no delivery and toward “1” for fuller-bodied, creamier coffee. Those positions and directions apply to the documented ECAM29X.5Y, not to bean-to-cup machines generally. The manual also advises rinsing, warming cups, and selecting a higher temperature for hotter coffee. Read the ECAM29X.5Y manual.

Quick troubleshooting
- The grinder dial will not turn: Check the manual; supported Philips and De’Longhi guidance says to adjust during grinding, not while idle.
- The first cup barely changed: Brew the number of drinks your manual recommends before making another adjustment.
- The coffee is still too cool: Check for an available temperature level and try rinsing and pre-warming the cup. Review energy-saving settings if your model has them.
- You are unsure which way to turn the dial: Stop and consult the exact model manual. Scales and directions are not standardized across brands.
