Brightness, warmer color, dark theme, and extra dim are separate settings, and names and availability vary by device.
Find the display controls on your Android phone
Android does not use one identical display menu on every phone. These manufacturer examples can help you locate the equivalent setting on your device. If a label or path does not match, use the search field in Settings and try terms such as “brightness,” “Night Light,” or “comfort.”
Google Pixel
Open Settings → Display & touch, then choose the control that matches your goal. Pixel documentation lists brightness, Night Light, Dark theme, color-related options, and comfort filters in its display settings. It also describes an option to dim the wallpaper at bedtime on Android 13 and later. Feature availability and labels may vary by Pixel model and software version. Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings → Display for the brightness slider and Adaptive brightness. Samsung calls its warmer-color feature Eye comfort shield; supported Galaxy devices may also offer Extra dim. Quick Settings can provide shortcuts to several display controls. The exact options and labels depend on the Galaxy model and software version. Samsung: Adjust your Galaxy phone or tablet’s display settings and Samsung: Reduce eye strain on your Galaxy phone or tablet.

Choose a setting for the change you want
Make the screen brighter or dimmer
Use the brightness slider to set the screen’s overall brightness manually. On supported devices, Adaptive brightness can respond to ambient lighting automatically. On Galaxy devices that include Extra dim, turn it on to go below the usual minimum brightness. Extra dim is a brightness control; it does not change the screen’s color tone or switch the interface to a dark theme.
Make screen colors warmer
On Pixel, look for Night Light; on Galaxy, look for Eye comfort shield. These features apply a warmer color appearance. Samsung’s options may include a color-temperature slider and an enhanced-comfort adjustment, depending on device and software. Google and Samsung document these as display adjustments; their help pages do not quantify a medical or sleep benefit.

Change the interface to a dark theme
Pixel’s Dark theme and Samsung’s Dark mode change supported interface surfaces to a darker theme. They are not the same as dimming the screen or warming its colors, and they do not guarantee that every app or page will appear dark.
Explore comfort options on Pixel
Pixel display settings also include comfort filters and brightness options for sensitive eyes. Which controls are available depends on the device. If you are browsing the Pixel display menu, choose the option whose description matches the adjustment you need rather than assuming that all comfort controls do the same thing.

Use quick access or find a missing setting
On supported Galaxy devices, open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen and look for shortcuts such as Eye comfort shield or Extra dim. If a shortcut is absent, check Settings → Display or search Settings by the feature name. On Pixel, start with Settings → Display & touch; Settings search is a useful fallback when labels differ from the example.
Keep in mind that changing brightness, color tone, dark theme, or dimming affects different aspects of the display. A warmer screen can still be bright, and a dark theme does not necessarily reduce the brightness of every image or app.

What these settings do—and do not establish
These are built-in device display controls. Google and Samsung explain how to use them, but the cited manufacturer help does not establish that they prevent eye strain, cure headaches, or improve sleep. A screen protector is not needed for these color or brightness adjustments; Google’s Screen protector mode concerns touch response, not eye comfort.
