To adjust Birkenstock straps, open them, place your foot on the footbed, then buckle them so they hold your foot without pressing tightly. BIRKENSTOCK’s product-care guidance suggests about 5 mm of space at the front strap and about 10 mm at the second strap. Treat those as starting points, then adjust for comfort and the sandal’s design.
How to set the straps
- Open every strap. Put the sandal on a flat surface and undo the buckles so your foot can sit naturally on the open footbed.
- Position your foot. Set it on the footbed rather than pulling the sandal up against your toes or heel.
- Buckle comfortably. Fasten each strap so it holds the foot in place without pinching or pressing hard. BIRKENSTOCK’s product-care guidance suggests about 5 mm of space between the front strap and foot, and about 10 mm at the second strap. These are approximate strap clearances, not a requirement to force every foot or sandal into identical settings.
- Walk a few steps and reassess. If a strap creates pressure or your foot feels squeezed, loosen it. If the foot shifts excessively, make a small adjustment rather than tightening all straps sharply.
Check footbed fit separately
Strap clearance is different from the space between your foot and the edge of the footbed. BIRKENSTOCK’s U.S. fit guide suggests about ¼ inch of space around the foot at the footbed edge and says the toes should not touch that edge. If your toes reach the edge, recheck how your foot is positioned and whether the sandal size is appropriate; tightening the straps does not correct a size mismatch.
Adjust differently during break-in
For a new pair, begin with the straps looser to help avoid pressure points. BIRKENSTOCK’s U.S. guide recommends wearing new sandals around the house for 1–2 hours at a time, then increasing wear gradually and tightening the straps as the footbed molds to your feet. Its product-care page likewise advises starting with up to 2 hours and gradually wearing them longer. Neither source gives a universal number of days for break-in, so let comfort guide the pace; do not treat pain as something you need to endure.
What to do if adjustment does not solve the fit
A strap is still too loose
If a strap remains loose at the tightest usable buckle setting, the BIRKENSTOCK UK width FAQ says extra holes can be punched. The FAQ does not specify who should do this, so consider a shoe-repair professional rather than assuming it is a do-it-yourself adjustment.

Your foot has too much room side to side
Noticeable space at the sides can indicate that a narrow-width fit may suit you better, according to the same UK FAQ. Narrow fit should still leave some space: your foot should not slide up along the sides of the footbed. Tightening straps until they hurt is not a substitute for checking width.
Width availability varies
BIRKENSTOCK’s Norway width information says most models come in regular and narrow widths and describes straps and buckles as individually adjustable. That does not mean every model is offered in both widths; availability depends on the model and market.
