To add Yahoo Mail to Outlook, use Outlook’s automatic setup first: New Outlook has an Add Account option under Accounts settings, while classic Outlook uses File > Add Account. Outlook then sends you to Yahoo to sign in and approve access. If automatic setup in classic Outlook fails, configure the account manually as IMAP with Yahoo’s server settings.
Before you add Yahoo Mail to Outlook
- Have your full Yahoo email address ready.
- Be able to sign in to Yahoo and complete any configured two-factor verification.
- Use IMAP if you want Outlook and Yahoo Mail to synchronize folders and mailbox actions.
- Update Outlook if you encounter setup problems.
Yahoo describes IMAP as two-way synchronization: actions in Outlook are reflected in Yahoo Mail. If Outlook asks whether to keep mail on Yahoo’s server, choose yes.
Add Yahoo Mail to New Outlook for Windows
- Open Outlook and select View > View settings. You can also select File > Account info if available.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts, then select Add Account.
- Enter your Yahoo email address and continue.
- Continue to the Yahoo sign-in page, sign in, and complete any configured two-factor verification.
- Review Yahoo’s permissions request and select Agree.
- If asked whether the browser may open Outlook, select Open.
- Return to Outlook, select the folder for your Yahoo address, and open Inbox.
If these screens do not match your Outlook, you may be using classic Outlook. Follow the classic Outlook steps below.
Add Yahoo Mail to classic Outlook for Windows
- Open Outlook and select File > Add Account.
- Enter your Yahoo email address and select Connect.
- Complete Yahoo’s sign-in and any configured two-factor verification.
- Review the Yahoo permissions request and select Agree.
- When Outlook confirms that the account was added, select Done. If offered Outlook Mobile setup and you do not want it, clear that option.
- In the folder pane, select the Yahoo account and open Inbox.
Manually configure Yahoo IMAP in classic Outlook
Use manual setup if automatic configuration fails. The Yahoo-branded sign-in flow is preferred when available; manual third-party IMAP setup may require a Yahoo-generated app password.

- Select File > Add Account.
- Enter your Yahoo email address, open Advanced options, and check Let me set up my account manually.
- Select Connect, then choose IMAP.
- Enter the incoming and outgoing server settings in the account setup fields.
- Enter your full Yahoo email address as the username. If Outlook requests a password for manual IMAP authentication, use a Yahoo app password if required.
- Confirm the settings and select Connect, then select Done after setup completes.

Yahoo also documents export.imap.mail.yahoo.com in a separate download-focused IMAP workflow. Do not substitute it for the general IMAP server above unless following that Yahoo guidance for your account and intended workflow.

Microsoft’s Outlook Team stated in its known-issue article, last updated August 11, 2023, that “With OAuth support, no App Password is needed to add the Yahoo account to Outlook Desktop.” Its reported rollout was 100% of Current Channel as of August 2, 2023; that historical channel status should not be taken as a guarantee about every current installation. The practical rule is to use Yahoo’s secure sign-in when Outlook presents it, and use an app password if manual third-party authentication requires one.

Create a Yahoo app password
- Sign in to Yahoo and open Account Security.
- Under External connections, choose Create app password or the equivalent app-password option.
- Name the app password, generate it, and copy it.
- Enter the generated password in the manual IMAP password field in Outlook.
Yahoo says an app password remains active until deleted, even if you change your main account password. You can delete it from Account Security and create another if needed.
Fix common Yahoo-Outlook setup problems
Outlook rejects my Yahoo password
- Check that you used your full Yahoo email address as the username.
- If Outlook opened Yahoo’s branded sign-in, complete sign-in and any verification there.
- If you are using manual IMAP authentication without Yahoo’s branded sign-in, generate and try an app password.
- Sign in to Yahoo Mail in a browser first and complete any account verification or security prompts.
Outlook never asks for a password
For classic Outlook IMAP setup, check whether Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is selected. Microsoft recommends checking the SPA option when Outlook does not prompt for an IMAP password; if setup still stalls, consult Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for your Outlook version.

Yahoo folders or older messages are missing
Confirm that you added the account as IMAP, not POP, and check the Yahoo account folders in Outlook. Yahoo says large mailboxes may take several days or longer to download. Folders with upwards of 100,000 messages may not download completely; Yahoo’s stated workaround is to split their content into folders.
Mail is not arriving or stays in the Outbox
Confirm Outlook is online, check your internet connection, and verify the incoming and outgoing server, port, SSL, and authentication settings against Yahoo’s current instructions. If mail arrives but messages stay in the Outbox, focus on SMTP authentication and outgoing settings.

Remove Yahoo Mail from Outlook
New Outlook
- Open View > View settings or File > Account info.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Beside the Yahoo account, select Manage, then Remove.
- Choose whether to remove it from this device or all devices if Outlook offers that choice.
Classic Outlook
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the Yahoo account and choose Remove.
- Confirm if prompted, then select Close.
Removing the account from Outlook disconnects it; it does not delete the Yahoo mailbox or its messages.

Can I add Yahoo Mail to Outlook without an app password?
