To add a thumbnail to a GeoDirectory listing, upload an image in its Images field, move the image you want displayed into the first position, and choose how it appears with the GD Post Images element. If by “website thumbnail” you mean a screenshot of the website in the listing’s URL field, GeoDirectory also documents a URL Screenshot image type; its setup depends on the URL field key and template configuration.
GeoDirectory and WordPress document the same image behavior for India as elsewhere; the sources do not identify a separate India-specific thumbnail setting. The precise screens and results can vary with your installed plugin version, active theme, and directory configuration.

Choose between an uploaded image and a website screenshot
First decide what the thumbnail should represent. An uploaded image is usually the right choice for a business logo, product photo, or branded listing image. A screenshot represents the website linked from the listing. These are different image sources and may require different configuration.
| What you want to show | Image source | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| A logo, photo, or other image chosen by the listing owner | Image uploaded to the listing’s post_images field |
Put the desired image first, then set up GD Post Images in the archive or detail template |
| A preview of the website linked in the listing | Screenshot associated with the listing’s URL field | Configure the URL Screenshot image type and confirm the field key and template behavior |
Add an uploaded thumbnail to a listing
-
Open the listing in the WordPress backend and edit it. GeoDirectory’s backend guide uses Places > Add New for creating a listing. If your site accepts frontend submissions, you can use its Add Listing page instead; availability depends on your site’s setup and permissions.

Find the listing’s Images field and upload the image. GeoDirectory identifies the field key as
post_images. Images are not required for a listing. -
Arrange the images so the one you want as the thumbnail is first. GeoDirectory treats the first listing image as the featured image and uses it when a single image is displayed.
-
If you need to select or change the listing-entry page, go to GeoDirectory > Settings > General > Pages > Add Listing page. The form on that page is rendered by the GD Add Listing element.
-
Open the GeoDirectory archive item or detail template and configure GD Post Images. GeoDirectory includes this element in its default GD Archive Item and GD Detail templates.

Preview both the directory archive and an individual listing. Some themes show the featured image in a banner or header. If that is not wanted, check GeoDirectory > Settings > Design > Detail for the setting that disables theme featured-image output, and verify the result with your active theme.
For GeoDirectory’s image-field and template details, see its GD > Post Images documentation and backend listing guide.
Use a screenshot of the listing’s website URL
GeoDirectory documents URL Screenshot as an image type. Its example uses the field key url and the corresponding screenshot key url_screenshot. The key on your site may differ, so inspect the actual URL field configured for listings before applying the example. GeoDirectory’s listing setup guide also describes a generated website screenshot as a possible fallback when a listing has no image.
The documentation presents URL Screenshot both as a selectable image type and in the context of a fallback. It does not establish that every GeoDirectory installation automatically generates and displays screenshots without configuration. Confirm the image type, field key, and template behavior in your own site. See the GD Post Images documentation and the listing setup guide.

Choose the layout, image size, and crop
Select how the image is presented
In the GD Post Images element, choose the display that matches the listing card or detail page:
- Single Image: shows one image, typically the first image in the listing.
- Slider: lets visitors navigate multiple listing images.
- Gallery: presents multiple images together in a grid.
The element also supports fallback types and an image-cover setting. Cover behavior can crop the edges of an image so it fills its display area; check the preview if logos or text sit close to the edge.
Adjust image dimensions and responsiveness
WordPress controls the available image sizes through Settings > Media, while the GD Post Images element lets you select a WordPress image size. GeoDirectory documents responsive output by default, but the active theme can affect which image is served. If a thumbnail looks blurry, check the selected size in the element and the available sizes under WordPress Media settings, then check whether the theme changes image delivery. GeoDirectory’s widget documentation and WordPress’s Media Settings documentation describe these controls.
Set a fallback for listings without images
GeoDirectory’s fallback sequence can use a company logo, category default image, custom-post-type default image, or listing default image. The widget uses the first fallback type that has a value. Configure category defaults on the category edit screen, the custom-post-type default in its settings, or the listing default in GeoDirectory’s design/archive settings. To show no fallback, set fallback_types=0 in the widget configuration.

Fallbacks help keep archive cards from appearing empty when listing owners have not uploaded images. Preview several categories and listing types, because defaults may be configured separately.
Troubleshoot thumbnails that do not appear as expected
- No image appears: Confirm that the listing has an image in Images or that the URL Screenshot image type is configured. For screenshots, verify the actual URL field key rather than assuming it is
url. - The wrong image appears: Reorder the listing images so the intended single/featured image is first, then inspect the GD Post Images element in both archive and detail templates.
- A default image appears instead: Check the configured fallback types and whether the expected image field contains a value. If no fallback should appear, set
fallback_types=0. - The image is blurry or oddly cropped: Review the selected WordPress image size, the sizes available under Settings > Media, the widget’s cover behavior, and any theme image overrides.
- The image appears in a banner or header as well as the card: Check the theme’s featured-image integration and the GeoDirectory detail design setting for disabling theme featured-image output.
- The Add Listing page is missing or its form differs: Check GeoDirectory > Settings > General > Pages > Add Listing page, the GD Add Listing element, and the permissions or submission settings on your site.

If you need to generate a website screenshot rather than upload a listing image, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. Its URL is the website to capture; save the response as an image file. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Does the setup differ for a directory in India?
The GeoDirectory and WordPress documentation reviewed describes general plugin and media behavior, not a separate India-specific thumbnail setting. Check the labels and settings against your installed GeoDirectory version, site field names, and active theme; the documentation pages may reflect a different configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are GeoDirectory listing images required?
No. GeoDirectory documents the Images field as optional.
Can I use a different URL field key from url for website screenshots?
GeoDirectory’s example uses url_screenshot for a URL field named url. Check your site’s configured field key and use the corresponding setup rather than assuming the example key applies.
