To show a preview for each website in a WordPress directory, save the destination URL with its listing, generate a screenshot, and associate the resulting image with that record. You can capture images manually and upload them to the Media Library, or automate capture with a WordPress plugin or screenshot API. The right setup depends on how often listings change, where images should be stored, and whether visitors can submit URLs.

This guide covers ordinary WordPress directories in India. If you mean screenshots displayed on an official WordPress.org plugin page, different asset rules apply; those are covered below.

Choose how to generate and display each preview

Start by deciding whether previews should be updated manually or generated automatically. A directory listing needs a reliable association between its target website URL and its screenshot. WordPress can store that association in the listing’s fields, while the image itself may live in the Media Library or be served by an external screenshot service.

Approach How it works Best fit Points to check
Manual capture and upload Capture each target site in a browser, then upload the image to WordPress and attach it to the listing. Small directories or listings that rarely change. Images must be refreshed by hand. Check image dimensions, file size, and how the listing stores its image.
WordPress plugin A plugin may capture screenshots through an API and expose them through a shortcode, button, or listing workflow. Directories that need a repeatable capture process without building the integration from scratch. Confirm whether it stores images locally or displays external images, what credentials it needs, and whether its current updates and compatibility suit your site.
Custom API integration Your site sends a listing URL to a screenshot API and stores or displays the returned image. Custom directory data models or workflows that need more control. Requires development, API credentials, security checks, and a provider dependency. Verify current pricing, quotas, data handling, India availability, and account eligibility with the provider.

For example, the Urlbox WordPress Screenshots project documents an API-backed shortcode workflow that requires an account and API credentials: Urlbox WordPress Screenshots. It illustrates one integration pattern, not a recommendation that it is currently the best choice for an India-based site. Tida URL Screenshot documents shortcode and custom-post-type button patterns: Tida URL Screenshot. Plugin features and directory metadata can change, so review the live listing before installing.

Connect the screenshot to the right directory listing

Use the fields and templates provided by your directory theme or plugin where possible. At minimum, each record needs a destination website URL and a way to identify its screenshot. Depending on your setup, the screenshot may be a Media Library attachment, a custom field, or a generated image URL.

  1. Identify the listing structure. Determine whether listings are standard posts, a custom post type, or records managed by a directory plugin. Use that system’s supported fields and template hooks rather than assuming every directory stores data the same way.
  2. Store the destination URL. Add a dedicated website URL field to each listing. Validate it when it is entered, and decide whether to allow only public HTTP and HTTPS destinations.
  3. Choose the image storage method. For a local workflow, upload the capture to the Media Library and save its attachment or image URL with the listing. For an API or shortcode workflow, follow the provider’s documented method; not every integration saves a local copy.
  4. Render the preview in the listing template. Display the saved image alongside the listing and make sure its alternative text describes the destination or listing, rather than repeating decorative text.
  5. Define an update process. Decide what happens when a listing URL changes, a capture fails, or a screenshot becomes outdated. For automatic capture, check whether the integration refreshes on demand, on a schedule, or only when an administrator triggers it.

Some plugins describe saving captured screenshots in the Media Library, while API-backed shortcode integrations may serve generated images externally. Confirm the selected tool’s current behavior instead of assuming that a screenshot will be stored locally. The Tida plugin listing is one example of a capture workflow to inspect: Tida URL Screenshot.

Secure URL capture, especially when visitors submit listings

A screenshot service or your own server-side browser may fetch the URL supplied for a listing. If an untrusted user can control that URL, the capture feature can become a path for server-side request forgery (SSRF): a request intended for a public website could instead target private or reserved network addresses. Validate URLs on the server and apply protections to the capture request itself.

  • Accept only the schemes your feature needs—typically HTTP and HTTPS—and reject malformed or unsupported URLs.
  • Prevent requests to private, loopback, link-local, and other reserved IP destinations. Consider redirects too: a public URL can redirect to a restricted destination.
  • Protect administrative actions with nonce checks and capability checks so only authorized users can trigger or change captures.
  • Do not treat a browser-side check as sufficient. Enforce validation in the server-side code that initiates the request.
  • Review the plugin or API’s current security and data-handling behavior before accepting user-submitted targets.

The Tida URL Screenshot changelog describes HTTP/HTTPS-only validation, private and reserved IP rejection, nonce checks, and capability-related settings protections. Those are useful controls to look for, not evidence that every plugin or custom implementation has them. See its WordPress.org listing for the plugin’s published details.

Use ScreenshotNeo to automate captures

If you prefer an API-backed workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Your integration can request a capture for a listing URL and then use the returned image in your directory. Choose whether your implementation will store the image locally or serve it through your own integration; do not assume the API response automatically creates a WordPress Media Library attachment.

For a direct capture, replace the sample destination with a URL you are authorized to capture and use your ScreenshotNeo API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and integration details. The basic call returns an image or PDF; the service also supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. For an API integration, handle the response and headers rather than treating every request as a successful image: the response identifies whether a capture was clean and whether it was billed.

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Or skip the browser setup

Use a single GET request to capture a listing URL. The following cURL example writes a WebP image to a file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan provides 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Check whether the WordPress.org plugin asset rules apply

If you are publishing a plugin in the official WordPress.org Plugin Directory, its screenshots are not the same thing as previews for websites listed on an ordinary WordPress directory site. The Plugin Handbook says: “Screenshots must be local to display. Links to external files won’t work.” For that WordPress.org plugin-page use case, screenshots must be local, named in lowercase as screenshot-1.png or screenshot-1.jpg and subsequent numbered files, and no larger than 10 MB. Captions in readme.txt should correspond to the screenshots. These are rules for plugin assets displayed on WordPress.org, not general requirements for directory thumbnails. See How Your Plugin Assets Work (last updated January 31, 2025).

Common problems and fixes

  • The listing shows no image. Check that the target URL and screenshot field are saved on the same record, and that the template renders the field your workflow uses. If the integration returns an external image URL, check whether it is still valid and accessible.
  • The screenshot is stale. Determine how the plugin or integration refreshes captures. Update or regenerate the image after a destination URL change, and avoid assuming a cached or previously saved image will update by itself.
  • The plugin asks for API credentials. Confirm that the integration requires an account and key or secret, enter credentials only in an authorized settings area, and check the provider’s documentation for quotas, pricing, service availability in India, and data handling. The Urlbox shortcode project, for example, documents an account-and-credentials requirement: project documentation.
  • A capture fails or shows an unexpected page. Check the destination URL, redirects, access restrictions, and the capture service’s response. Some sites block automated browsers or require a consent interaction; do not treat a failed capture as a valid preview.
  • User-submitted URLs are rejected or risky. Verify server-side scheme validation and blocking of private or reserved network addresses, including redirect destinations. Ensure capture actions also enforce nonce and capability checks.
  • A screenshot is rejected on a WordPress.org plugin page. Check that the image is local, has the required lowercase numbered filename, and is within the 10 MB maximum for that specific use case.

What to verify before launch in India

The available plugin and API documentation establishes integration patterns, but it does not establish current provider pricing, quotas, account eligibility, data-retention terms, or service availability for India. Check those details directly with the provider you select. Also test the whole flow using a representative listing: URL entry, capture, storage, display on desktop and mobile, refresh behavior, and failure handling.
