In either case, the voice control should turn speech into text in the store’s existing search field, so shoppers can review the query and get the usual Shopify search results. Keep typed search available as the fallback.
How voice search should work with Shopify search
Shopify’s storefront search already has a form-based path: the form submits to {{ routes.search_url }} and sends the query in an input named q. The theme’s search template can then render results from search.results. A voice feature should populate that same query field rather than create a separate search system. See Shopify’s search template documentation.
For predictive search, Shopify describes a search input, a section that hosts suggestions, and JavaScript that renders the Predictive Search API response. Suggestions can include products, collections, queries, pages, and articles. Shopify points developers to Dawn’s sections/main-search.liquid, sections/predictive-search.liquid, and assets/predictive-search.js as examples. The speech-recognition step is separate: Shopify’s documentation does not provide a complete voice-search recipe. Read Shopify’s predictive-search documentation.
Shopify describes predictive search as helping customers “articulate and refine their search queries” and explore a store. Suggestions may reflect catalog terms and customer searches; speech recognition itself does not make search results more relevant.

Choose an app or customize your theme
Install a voice-search app
A Shopify App Store listing for Voice Search ‑ Speaky describes voice-powered search and says it works with most Shopify themes. The listing surfaced a price from $2.50 per month and a free trial, but those terms can change and should be verified on the current listing before you decide. This listing is not an independent test or endorsement. Check the app’s current price, trial terms, permissions, support, reviews, and compatibility with your theme and mobile storefront. Shopify has a voice-search feature category, but being in that category does not by itself confirm that an app adds a working voice control. Start from the Shopify App Store and verify the exact app listing and its details.
Also check the app’s installation instructions. Shopify’s theme requirements describe Custom Liquid sections as insertion points for certain apps, but that does not establish whether this app uses a Custom Liquid section, an app embed, or another integration method. Customize the theme
Custom theme work gives you control over where the voice button appears and how it interacts with search. Add a clearly labeled button beside the existing search input. When speech recognition returns text, place it in the same q field so the shopper can edit it before submitting. If the theme uses predictive search, update the existing input and use the theme’s established predictive-search behavior rather than building a parallel results interface.
This approach follows Shopify’s documented search structure; Shopify’s search and predictive-search documentation does not specify how to capture speech. The theme files and markup vary, so do not assume your store matches Dawn exactly.

Custom implementation: integration checklist
- Work on a duplicate or development theme. Inspect its search form and predictive-search components before changing code. Publish only after checking the storefront behavior on your target browsers and devices.
- Add a labeled voice control beside the search field. Make its purpose clear to screen-reader users as well as sighted shoppers, and provide visible keyboard focus.
- Handle speech states accessibly. Let shoppers know when listening starts, when a query is recognized, and when recognition fails. Keep the text editable rather than submitting speech results without review.
- Send the query through the existing search flow. For standard search, populate the input named
qand submit the normal Shopify search form. For predictive search, connect the recognized text to the existing input and its current suggestion-rendering flow. - Retain ordinary search controls. Leave the typed input and a usable submit control in place, so shoppers can search without speech or correct a misheard query.
- Test the complete experience. Verify recognition, editing, submission, predictive suggestions if present, keyboard access, focus visibility, and listening or error announcements on the browsers and devices your customers use. Shopify recommends keyboard-operable controls, visible focus, valid page structure, and accessibility checks such as Lighthouse and WAVE. See Shopify’s theme accessibility guidance.
How to decide which route fits
- Theme compatibility: Confirm support for your actual theme and mobile storefront rather than relying only on a broad compatibility claim.
- Search integration: Find out whether speech populates Shopify’s existing search or replaces the store’s search behavior.
- Accessibility: Confirm that keyboard users can operate search, focus is visible, controls are labeled, and typed search remains available.
- Control and upkeep: An app may simplify installation; custom code offers theme-level control but needs attention when the theme changes. This is a practical trade-off, not a measured cost comparison.
- Current terms and data handling: Review app permissions, privacy details, support, price, and trial terms on the current listing before installation.
There is no established comparison here showing that an app or custom implementation performs better, improves conversion, or increases accessibility in every store. Evaluate the fit for your own theme and customers instead of assuming voice search will increase sales.
