You can add a video to an EC2-hosted YouTube stream without restarting only if the playout system feeding the encoder supports adding media while it is running. Copying a file to EC2 is not enough: the running playout process must recognize and queue it, while the encoder stays connected to YouTube. There is no universal hot-add command for an unspecified EC2 setup.
Understand what needs to stay running
A YouTube encoder sends the live content to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. The file sequence or playout system determines what content the encoder sends; uploading a file to the EC2 filesystem does not, by itself, insert that file into the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not define an EC2 file upload as a way to update a live stream. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
To avoid restarting, keep the encoder’s outgoing session connected and add the new video through the queue or media-source mechanism used by your playout software. Exact steps depend on your operating system, encoder, startup command, file formats, and queue implementation.
Add a video without stopping the YouTube-facing encoder
- Check the running setup. Identify the encoder and playout component, how they are launched, where media files are stored, and whether the playout system supports adding files while active. Do not assume that a watched folder or playlist is dynamically reloaded unless your particular software documents that behavior.
- Keep the YouTube stream configuration intact. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and configure the encoder with the stream server URL and key. Treat the key as a credential. If you reset it, replace the key in the encoder configuration before expecting it to connect. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Upload the file to EC2. Copy it to the location your playout system uses, but consider this only the file-transfer step—not confirmation that the live sequence has changed.
- Add it to the active playout sequence. Use the encoder or playout controller’s documented queue, playlist, or watched-media feature. Verify that it has recognized and scheduled the new file before relying on it for continuous playback.
- Monitor the transition. Check the encoder output and YouTube’s live preview to confirm the expected file is playing and the stream remains connected. Test this behavior in your actual configuration; seamless transitions are not guaranteed by the general workflow.
YouTube’s stated end action is to stop sending content from the encoder. If continuous playback is the goal, do not stop the sender as a way to change the file sequence. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Can FFmpeg pick up a new file from a concat list?
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a sequence of files, provided the inputs have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Its documentation describes sequential reading; it does not promise that an already-running FFmpeg process will hot-reload edits to the concat list. FFmpeg documentation: concat demuxer
Therefore, adding a filename to a list file while FFmpeg is already running is not a universal no-restart method. Use a playout controller that explicitly supports live queue updates, or verify the behavior of your exact FFmpeg command and version in a test stream before relying on it. Avoid stopping the running sender if doing so would end the live session.

When EC2 is not the right architecture
If you need a managed media workflow rather than a process you operate on an EC2 instance, AWS Elemental MediaLive is an adjacent option. AWS documents RTMP push and other input types for MediaLive, and its solution architecture can encode and originate adaptive-bitrate HLS delivery. That is a different managed workflow from running FFmpeg on EC2; it is not simply a way to hot-add files to an existing EC2 process. The appropriate choice depends on whether you need to retain your EC2 workflow, use local file sequences or live sources, and dynamically add files with defined interruption behavior. Common problems and fixes
- The uploaded file never plays: File transfer and playout scheduling are separate. Confirm the active queue or media source recognizes the file and that it is scheduled.
- The new video is rejected or plays incorrectly: Check the playout system’s supported formats and, for FFmpeg concat sequences, compatibility of streams, codecs, and time bases.
- Editing the concat list has no effect: The documentation does not establish hot-reloading by an active process. Use a live queue feature or test the precise setup rather than assuming list changes take effect.
- The YouTube stream disconnects: Check whether the encoder stopped sending and whether the configured stream URL and key remain valid. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the replacement.
- A change causes an interruption: The interruption behavior depends on the playout implementation. Test queue updates and transitions in the actual configuration before using them on a stream that must stay live.
