To accept UPI, cards and digital wallets online, you need two things: a merchant account with a payment gateway and an integration for your store platform. Shopify merchants configure Shopify Payments where it is supported or install a third-party gateway app. WooCommerce merchants install a gateway plugin and configure it under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments. Complete KYC, test every payment and refund path with sandbox credentials, verify webhooks and order statuses, then replace the test keys with live credentials.
What you need before adding payment methods
UPI, card and wallet buttons do not come from Shopify or WooCommerce alone. The gateway is the service that presents payment methods, authorises the transaction, sends a success or failure result to your store and settles money to your bank account.
- A supported store platform: Shopify requires an app or built-in payment option; WooCommerce requires a WordPress plugin.
- A merchant account: The provider will request business, bank and identity information and may approve methods separately.
- Verification (KYC): Your country, business type, products and website details affect eligibility.
- Credentials: Shopify apps usually connect through an authorised account; WooCommerce gateways normally require API keys or merchant key and salt values.
- A test environment: Use sandbox or test mode before accepting real money.
- A live bank account and refund process: Decide who handles refunds, disputes, failed orders and settlement reconciliation.
Method names can be misleading. “Wallets” may include only the wallets enabled for your approved account, while a UPI option can appear as a collect request, a QR flow or an intent that opens a supported mobile app. PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm availability therefore depends on the gateway, your country and the provider’s approval; installing an app does not guarantee every wallet will appear at checkout.

Do not confuse a platform’s billing methods with customer checkout. Shopify documentation for paying a Shopify bill may mention UPI or Visa, Mastercard and RuPay cards, but those options pay Shopify; they do not automatically enable those methods for shoppers on your storefront.

Which gateway should you use?
There is no universal “best” gateway. Compare the options against the payment methods your customers actually use and the operational work your team can support.

Published provider pages establish method coverage, but they do not provide a dependable cross-provider comparison of fees or payment success rates. Ask each provider for the current commercial schedule, settlement timing, refund rules, international-payment eligibility, chargeback handling and support terms before choosing.
How to add payments to Shopify
1. Check Shopify Payments eligibility
- Sign in to Shopify admin.
- Open Settings > Payments.
- Review the Shopify Payments section and start activation if your country and business are supported.
- Submit the requested account, business and identity information.
- Wait for verification. Card acceptance becomes available after setup and approval.
Shopify Payments is country-dependent. If the option is missing or your business is not eligible, use a supported third-party provider instead of trying to bypass the location or verification checks.

2. Install a third-party gateway when you need local methods
For an Indian storefront that needs UPI and wallets, install the provider’s official Shopify app. Razorpay documents a Shopify integration for UPI, cards, wallets and netbanking. Cashfree documents UPI, cards, wallets, EMI and pay-later activation through its Shopify integration.
- Open the Shopify App Store and locate the provider’s official payment app.
- Install it and approve the requested Shopify permissions.
- Sign in to an existing merchant account or create one through the provider’s onboarding flow.
- Complete KYC and connect the bank account used for settlement.
- In the provider dashboard, enable only the methods approved for your account.
- Return to Settings > Payments, select the connected provider and save the configuration.
Shopify allows a third-party provider to process cards while Shopify Payments remains available for additional methods where supported. Review the checkout configuration carefully so you do not present two confusing card paths or accidentally disable a method that customers rely on.
3. Configure checkout and order behaviour
- Use the provider’s hosted or embedded checkout exactly as documented; do not paste API code into theme files unless the provider explicitly requires it.
- Confirm that the store currency, tax display and shipping totals sent to the gateway match the final Shopify order.
- Set the provider’s return URL and webhook or callback permissions if the app exposes those settings.
- Check how the app marks an order after payment: paid, pending, failed, cancelled or refunded.
4. Test before going live
Keep the provider in test mode. Place successful and deliberately failed transactions, close the payment window, cancel a UPI request and test a refund. Check the result in three places: the provider dashboard, the Shopify order timeline and the customer’s email or notification. A checkout page that displays “success” while the order remains unpaid indicates a callback or webhook problem that must be fixed before launch.

How to add payments to WooCommerce
1. Open the provider account first
Create and verify the merchant account before installing the plugin. Razorpay lists account creation and API-key generation as prerequisites. PayU requires a merchant account and plugin credentials. Keep test credentials separate from live keys and never email secret keys or place them in public theme code.

2. Install and activate the gateway plugin
- In WordPress admin, open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for the provider’s official WooCommerce plugin.
- Install it, confirm that the author and compatibility details are correct, and select Activate.
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments. Some plugin versions label this area Checkout or Payments.
- Enable the gateway and select Manage or its configuration link.
Razorpay documents installation through WordPress followed by configuration under WooCommerce payment settings. The exact field names can change with plugin versions, but the required values are normally the key ID and secret or the provider’s merchant key and salt.
3. Enter credentials and select the environment
- Choose Sandbox or Test while validating the store.
- Enter the test API keys or merchant credentials supplied by the provider.
- Set the currency and any country or method toggles required by the plugin.
- Save changes, clear any page-cache layer and confirm that the gateway appears on a test checkout.
PayU’s WooCommerce instructions specifically call for enabling PayUBiz, opening Manage, selecting sandbox or production, and entering currency and merchant credentials. Follow the equivalent fields in another provider’s plugin rather than copying PayU values into it.

4. Configure UPI, cards and wallets
Enable each method in the provider dashboard and, where offered, in the WooCommerce gateway settings. A method may remain hidden when the merchant account is not approved, the currency is unsupported, the order total is outside the provider’s limits or the customer’s device cannot use the relevant app. Keep the checkout labels clear: identify UPI, cards and wallets separately so a shopper knows what will happen after clicking.
5. Validate order status, webhooks and refunds
Run a complete test matrix before production:
- Successful card payment.
- Successful UPI payment and a UPI request that expires.
- Wallet payment, where a wallet is enabled for the test account.
- Declined or failed payment.
- Customer cancellation before authorisation.
- Browser refresh or return from the gateway after payment.
- Full and partial refund from the WooCommerce order screen and from the provider dashboard.
Confirm that a paid order is not left in “pending,” that a failed order does not trigger fulfilment and that a refund updates both systems. Webhook delivery must be reachable from the public internet and must use the provider’s required signing or secret validation. If your security plugin blocks the callback route, payments may succeed at the gateway while WooCommerce never receives the confirmation.
Testing checklist before accepting real money

Use the provider’s test numbers or simulated transactions; never invent a real card number or send test money through a customer’s account. After all tests pass, replace test credentials with live keys, switch the environment to production and make one low-value live transaction before announcing the checkout to every customer.

Go-live and day-to-day operations
Protect credentials and callbacks
- Store API secrets in the gateway settings or a protected secrets manager, not in JavaScript, screenshots or support tickets.
- Restrict WordPress administrator access and enable two-factor authentication where available.
- Validate webhook signatures and process events idempotently.
- Keep the plugin, WordPress core and Shopify app current, but test updates on a staging copy when possible.
Reconcile settlements and refunds
Gateway success is not the same as bank settlement. Reconcile provider transaction IDs against store order IDs, fees, taxes, refunds and settlement batches. Define who can issue refunds and whether refunds are initiated in the store, the gateway dashboard or both. Never refund in both places unless the provider explicitly documents that workflow.
Plan for international payments
International cards, currencies and cross-border settlement require separate eligibility. Ask the provider whether your account, business category and bank support them; do not infer international support from domestic card acceptance. Display the currency and any additional authentication step before the customer submits payment.
Common problems and fixes
The gateway does not appear at checkout
- Confirm the gateway is enabled in Shopify Payments settings or WooCommerce Payments settings.
- Check that the currency, shipping country and order amount meet the provider’s rules.
- Verify that KYC is complete and the required method is approved.
- Disable conflicting gateway plugins or duplicate Shopify payment apps.
- Clear cache and test in a private browser window.
Payment succeeds but the order is pending
Check webhook delivery, callback URLs, firewall rules, SSL and the provider’s event log. A customer return to the store is not proof of payment; the server-to-server confirmation must be accepted and verified. Reconcile the transaction manually before fulfilment and avoid pressing “capture” again until you know whether the first capture succeeded.

UPI or wallet options are missing
Review method activation in the provider dashboard, not just the store plugin. Approval may be method-specific. Confirm that the shopper’s country, device and currency qualify, and that the checkout is not running in sandbox mode with methods unavailable to the test account.
Refunds fail or remain pending
Check whether the transaction is captured, whether the provider supports partial refunds and whether your account has refund permission. Match the refund request to the original provider transaction ID, then monitor the asynchronous refund event instead of assuming that a button click completed the bank-side reversal.
Recommended launch sequence
- Choose a gateway based on required methods, platform integration, settlement and support—not an unverified success-rate claim.
- Create the merchant account and complete KYC.
- Install the Shopify app or WooCommerce plugin.
- Connect the account and enable only approved UPI, card and wallet methods.
- Configure currency, return URLs, webhooks and refund permissions.
- Run success, failure, cancellation, expiry, wallet, callback and refund tests in sandbox mode.
- Review order status and settlement reconciliation.
- Switch to live credentials and production mode.
- Place one low-value live transaction, verify fulfilment and refund it if your launch checklist requires a reversibility test.
- Monitor gateway events, failed orders and settlement reports during the first days of operation.
This sequence gives Shopify and WooCommerce stores the same operational safeguards while respecting their different integration points: Shopify uses payment settings and apps, whereas WooCommerce relies on a plugin and its payment-settings screen.
