Show the volume icon in the taskbar
- Open Start > Control Panel.
- Open Sounds and Audio Devices, then select the Volume tab.
- Select Place volume icon in the taskbar.
- Click Apply. The speaker icon should appear in the taskbar if Windows can control the sound card’s volume through software. Microsoft’s SysTray and SndVol32 documentation describes this setting and condition.
If you prefer, open Start > Run, type mmsys.cpl, and press Enter. This opens the Sounds and Audio Devices applet directly.
If the checkbox is unavailable or the icon does not appear
Check whether Volume Control opens
Choose Start > Run, enter sndvol32.exe, and press Enter. Windows XP’s SndVol32 program controls master volume and individual sound-source levels, including wave, CD, and synthesizer. If the Master Volume window opens, the program is available; if Windows reports that Volume Control has not been installed, that is a clue that the program or its files may be missing or affected. A 2011 Microsoft Q&A community response describes this diagnostic and error wording.
Consider the audio device and driver
Windows displays the speaker icon when the sound card’s volume can be changed through software. Microsoft’s documentation explains that, at logon, SysTray checks whether the audio driver exposes a speaker or headphone mixer destination; if neither is available, it does not display the icon. The cited material does not identify a universal driver repair for a particular PC, so check the installed audio device and consult its manufacturer for an appropriate driver rather than downloading an executable from an old community thread.

What the taskbar icon controls
The icon represents Windows XP’s SndVol32 volume control: it provides access to master volume and sound-source levels. SysTray.exe is responsible for showing or hiding the speaker icon. Microsoft notes that the icon is hidden by default in Windows XP, with Windows XP Service Pack 1 identified as an exception to that default-visibility statement.
