To make donation messages speak aloud on a live stream, enable text-to-speech (TTS) for the tip or donation alert in your alert service, add its alert widget or overlay to the live scene, and test both the alert and its audio in your streaming software. In the dashboards, payments are often called “tips,” so look for tip-alert settings if you do not see “donations.”
Before you start
Identify the tipping page and alert service your viewers use. TTS must be enabled on the corresponding tip event, and its alert source must be present in the scene you stream. If you configure a different provider from the one connected to your viewers’ tipping link, their messages may not trigger the alert.
- Have access to the alert service dashboard and your streaming software.
- Know which scene you use for the live stream.
- Decide whether to allow freeform donor messages. Those messages are user-submitted text and can be offensive or disruptive when read aloud.
No special microphone, capture card, headset, or stream controller is required for the alert configuration described here.
Set up donation TTS with Streamlabs
Streamlabs’ procedure is to configure the tip alert in its dashboard and make sure an Alert Box is in your live scene. The service’s support guide says viewers hear a tip message live when TTS is enabled. Its November 5, 2025 guide reports over 50 voices; that is Streamlabs’ stated feature count and may change.

- Add the alert source. In OBS, add the Streamlabs Alert Box widget URL as a Browser Source. If you use Streamlabs Desktop or the Streamlabs OBS plugin, the guide also documents a native Alert Box source. Make sure the source is in the scene you intend to stream.
- Open tip alert settings. Sign in at Streamlabs.com, open Alert Box, select Tips (or Bits if you also want TTS for Bits), and open Text-to-Speech.
- Choose controls. Select a voice and set a minimum tip amount if available. Configure the spam filter, then enable TTS for the event. Streamlabs recommends starting with its spam filter at Low or Medium; test the setting to make sure it blocks unwanted messages without suppressing legitimate ones.
- Set profanity handling. In the alert settings, use the default or custom profanity filter as appropriate. Streamlabs documents options to replace or hide blocked words, or suppress alerts containing them.
- Save and test. Use the dashboard test dropdown, Live Preview, or the software’s test widgets. Confirm that the visual alert appears and that speech reaches the stream mix.
Streamlabs says its core Alert Box is free; it identifies Ultra as an optional way to access a larger theme library. Its documentation does not make a paid tier a prerequisite for donation TTS.
Set up donation TTS with StreamElements
StreamElements configures TTS in an overlay’s AlertBox widget. Its alert instructions focus on Twitch and say the process is broadly similar on other platforms, but dashboard labels and available options may differ. Check the settings for the platform and tipping page you actually use.

- Configure tipping. In StreamElements, set up the tipping provider and page first. Its documentation names PayPal and SE.Pay as options; provider eligibility can vary by country.
- Create or edit an overlay. Add an AlertBox widget and open the settings for the tip alert.
- Enable speech. Scroll to the TTS settings, enable text-to-speech, and choose a voice.
- Review variations. Inspect any alert variations as well as the base tip alert. A variation can override the base configuration, so check that TTS is enabled wherever you expect a tip message to be spoken.
- Add the overlay to OBS and test it. If the overlay is separate from your streaming software, add its URL as a Browser Source. Test the alert in the dashboard and then verify the result in OBS.
StreamElements’ tipping settings include provider options, minimum and maximum amounts, a maximum message length, and moderation controls. Its moderation guide documents standard and custom profanity protection, message filters, repeated-character TTS anti-spam, and optional manual approval of tips. Filtered tip events remain in the activity feed but do not trigger an alert; the guide says tip moderation does not affect fund transfers.
Which workflow should you use?
If you already have a tipping page and alert provider, configure that provider first so the donation, message, and alert stay connected. If you are choosing a setup, compare the parts that affect your stream:

Neither choice removes the need to test the actual scene and stream audio. A dashboard preview can work even when a browser-source audio route in OBS is wrong.
Moderate messages before they go live
Donor TTS turns submitted text into audible stream content. Before enabling it for viewers, decide how to handle profanity, spam, and abusive messages.

- Consider manual approval if your service offers it and you want to review messages before they trigger alerts.
- Test with ordinary messages and messages that should be filtered. Confirm whether a filtered event is hidden, altered, held for approval, or simply prevented from alerting.
Test the alert and troubleshoot missing speech
Run a test after saving settings, first in the service dashboard and then in your streaming software. Check both what viewers see and what they hear.
