To add StreamElements to a YouTube Live stream, set up its OBS integration if you want StreamElements tools inside OBS, add an overlay to your OBS scene as a browser source, and separately authorize the chatbot as a YouTube moderator if you want chat automation. These are three related but separate steps—not one switch.
Choose how to connect StreamElements to OBS
SE.Live integrates StreamElements tools into OBS. Alternatively, you can configure OBS to stream to YouTube with your YouTube stream key, then add a StreamElements overlay as a browser source. Use SE.Live if you want its streaming tools and docks inside OBS; use the standard OBS route if you prefer not to install the integration or want to configure the stream service and overlay separately. The official guides describe both approaches but do not provide a controlled performance comparison.
Check compatibility before installing SE.Live
StreamElements’ current documentation lists SE.Live for Windows with OBS Studio 31.x or newer, and macOS availability in beta. Requirements can change, so check the current SE.Live installation guide if your operating system or OBS version differs.
Install SE.Live and connect your accounts
- Close OBS. Install SE.Live with OBS closed, then reopen OBS.
- Sign in to StreamElements. In OBS, open the StreamElements menu and sign in as prompted.
- Connect YouTube or configure OBS manually. Follow the connection flow in StreamElements’ YouTube setup tutorial. If using OBS’s standard stream configuration instead, select YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the service and enter the YouTube stream key shown under Encoder setup.
Treat the stream key like a password. StreamElements’ tutorial warns, “never share your stream key!” Do not show it in a recording, screenshot, or public chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings before broadcasting.

Add video and audio sources to your OBS scene
StreamElements is not itself a camera or microphone input. If your scene needs those sources, add them in OBS: use Sources → + → Video Capture Device for a camera and Sources → + → Audio Input Capture for a microphone or other input. These are ordinary OBS scene settings, not prerequisites imposed by StreamElements; select and configure the devices you actually use.
Create an overlay and place it in OBS
- Choose or create an overlay. In StreamElements, open Themes Gallery and select a YouTube theme, or use an existing overlay. The tutorial suggests choosing a static theme for optimal CPU performance.
- Customize the overlay. Adjust AlertBox settings and hide any finished countdown, starting-soon, or frame layers that you do not want visible.
- Copy the overlay URL. Use the overlay’s URL from StreamElements. An overlay can combine items such as alerts, labels, goals, and chat; OBS renders it through a browser source.
- Add it to the scene. In OBS, select the scene, choose Sources → + → Browser, paste the overlay URL, and set the dimensions. StreamElements’ tutorial uses 1920 × 1080 as its example; use dimensions appropriate to your scene rather than treating that example as a universal requirement.
- Check it before going live. Confirm that the browser source fits the scene and that the elements you intend to show are visible. If you change the overlay in StreamElements, check the OBS preview again.
For the underlying browser-source approach, see StreamElements’ overlay documentation.

Enable the StreamElements chatbot separately
The chatbot is optional and requires YouTube authorization; adding an overlay or installing SE.Live does not automatically make the bot a moderator.
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community.
- Add or approve the StreamElements chatbot account as a moderator, following the StreamElements YouTube chatbot guide.
- Make the broadcast public and live so the bot can join. When checking its messages, select Live chat; YouTube’s Top chat may hide bot messages.
Know which StreamElements features work on YouTube
StreamElements says some loyalty features are not currently available on YouTube accounts, including giveaways, Stream Store, viewer queue, and media requests. Do not assume that every feature shown in a Twitch-oriented onboarding flow is available for a YouTube channel.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- SE.Live does not install or connect: Check that you are using Windows or the macOS beta and, on Windows, OBS Studio 31.x or newer. Close OBS during installation and reopen it afterward. Recheck the current installation guide if the available options differ.
- The stream does not reach YouTube: Check that OBS is configured for YouTube and that the correct stream key was entered. Keep the key private; replace it in YouTube settings if it may have been exposed.
- The overlay is missing or misplaced: Confirm that the OBS browser source contains the overlay URL and that its dimensions suit the scene. The 1920 × 1080 values in the tutorial are an example, not a universal setting.
- The chatbot is not joining: Verify the moderator approval in YouTube Studio, then check that the broadcast is public and live. Use Live chat rather than Top chat to look for bot messages.
- A loyalty feature is unavailable: Check whether it is among the YouTube limitations StreamElements lists; the Twitch-oriented feature set does not apply in full to YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera input. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
