The reliable way to track a Steam Next Fest discovery is to wishlist the full game, not merely install its demo. From the event hub, open the demo’s associated game storefront, select Add to your Wishlist on the left side, then open the linked developer or publisher page and select Follow. Steam can send email and mobile alerts when a demo becomes available for the first time for a wishlisted game or from a developer you follow, provided your notification preferences allow it.
This guide explains the complete workflow, what each action tracks, how to find demos during and after the event, how privacy affects your wishlist, and what to check when an expected alert does not arrive.
What the wishlist and Follow buttons actually do
Steam treats a Next Fest demo and the unreleased game behind it as related but separate items. The demo is the thing you launch and play. The wishlist entry belongs to the main game storefront listing, which is the durable record Steam uses for the game’s eventual release and certain availability alerts.

Use both controls when you care about a particular title and also want to discover that studio’s future demos. Wishlist is narrow and game-specific; Follow is broader and developer-focused.

When and where to look for Next Fest demos
Open the live Next Fest hub
Steam describes Next Fest as a multi-day celebration of upcoming games with playable demos, browsing by categories and tags, and developer-hosted livestreams and chats. Open the Next Fest hub while the event is live rather than relying on an old bookmark or a search result from a previous edition.
Next Fest recurs three times a year. Steam’s 2025 announcement described a February, June and October cadence, but the exact opening and closing dates vary. Treat those months as a planning guide, not a promise of specific dates. The live hub is the authoritative place to confirm the current event.
Browse by category and tag
Start with a genre, feature or tag that matches what you want to play. This is more efficient than opening every featured tile, especially in a large event. A tag describes how a game is classified on Steam; it does not guarantee that the demo contains every feature associated with that tag.

Use livestreams and chats as additional discovery tools
Some developers host livestreams or chats through the event. These can provide context about a demo’s scope and development status, but they are optional discovery features. A livestream appearance is not a quality rating and does not replace checking the store page for supported languages, accessibility information or the developer’s own description.

Expect the catalog to change after the event
The hub is tied to a particular edition. If a demo no longer appears there, search Steam for the game’s title and open its storefront page, or use the developer’s page to locate related games. The event page’s disappearance does not by itself tell you whether a demo was removed, updated or made available elsewhere; the current store listing is the useful reference.
Step-by-step: add a Next Fest game to your wishlist
- Open Steam’s current Next Fest hub. Choose a demo from the event’s category, tag or search results.
- Select the demo to inspect its listing. Read the title carefully. Steam may present the playable demo as a separate item from the full game.
- Open the associated game’s storefront page. Follow the link or store-page control that takes you from the demo to the main, upcoming game listing. The wishlist action belongs on this full-game page.
- Click Add to your Wishlist. Steam Support gives the instruction this way: “You can add a game to your Wishlist by viewing the storefront page for a specific game and clicking on the Add to your Wishlist button on the left side of the screen.” The control should change to indicate that the game is now saved.
- Confirm that you saved the full game, not only the demo. Return to the game listing or your account’s wishlist and check that the upcoming title is present. This distinction matters if the demo has a separate name, application entry or library tile.
Wishlisting is the best single action for a game you may buy or play later. It keeps the title in your account after Next Fest ends and targets alerts for that particular game rather than every project from the studio.
Step-by-step: follow the developer or publisher
- Stay on the game’s storefront page. Look for the developer or publisher credited on the listing.
- Open the linked developer or publisher page. Use the link Steam provides rather than assuming that a similarly named studio page is the same account.
- Select Follow. This subscribes your Steam account to updates associated with that developer or publisher.
- Repeat only when the relationship is clear. A publisher page may represent multiple studios and projects. Follow it when you want the wider set of releases; otherwise, follow the specific developer page when Steam provides one.
Following is useful when you discovered one promising demo but want to hear about the studio’s other demos. It is broader than a wishlist entry, so expect a wider range of notifications.
Enable the notifications that make these actions useful
Wishlist and Follow are account actions; alerts are controlled separately. Open Steam’s current email and mobile notification preferences and make sure notifications are permitted on the channels you actually check. Steam’s client interface and wording can change, so use the current settings labels rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.

Steam announced this behavior in a client update: “We’ve now also made it so that when a demo becomes available for the first time for a game that you have on your Steam wishlist, or from a developer you follow, Steam can send you an email and mobile notification about that demo.” The important qualifications are can send and for the first time:
- The game must be on your wishlist, or the developer must be followed, when Steam evaluates the availability.
- The notification concerns a demo becoming available for the first time. It is not a promise of a message for every patch, re-release or event appearance.
- Email and mobile delivery depend on your current account and device preferences.
- Steam may revise the notification controls or their location in a later client version.
If a title was already offering a demo before you wishlisted it, do not assume that Steam will send a new “demo available” alert. The documented trigger is first-time availability, not the moment you add an already-available demo to your account.
Control who can see your wishlist
Steam lets you choose wishlist visibility through your Steam Community Profile privacy settings. The available audience choices are Everyone, Friends or Private (only the account owner). Select the audience that matches your comfort level, then save the setting if Steam asks you to confirm it.

Privacy visibility answers a social question—who can view the list on your profile. It is separate from the act of adding a game to the wishlist or following a developer. Review the setting whenever you share your profile publicly, join a community event or change how much of your account activity is visible.

How to choose which demos deserve your time
Next Fest can contain far more demos than one person can finish. Use the information on each store page to make deliberate choices instead of treating event placement as a recommendation.

Do not use wishlist counts as a quality score, and do not assume a prominent event position means a game is better than a less visible listing. Those signals describe visibility or interest, not your personal fit.

- During the event, play demos, attend relevant developer streams or chats, and record any title whose demo is separate from its main store listing.
- Before the event closes, confirm that the full games you care about are wishlisted and that the relevant developer pages are followed.
- Between editions, rely on your wishlist, followed developers and Steam’s current notification preferences rather than expecting the old event hub to remain unchanged.
For scale, Steam’s 2022 Next Fest announcement described more than 1,000 free demos for that edition. That is a historical figure for that event, not a current guarantee. It explains why a personal filtering and tracking method is more useful than trying to inspect every listing.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
The demo page has no wishlist button
This usually means you are looking at the separate playable item. Return to the demo’s associated full-game storefront listing and look on the left side for Add to your Wishlist. If the game has no visible full listing, search its exact title in Steam and verify that you are signed in to the intended account.
You cannot find the developer’s Follow control
Open the developer or publisher link shown on the game’s store page, not a search result with a similar name. Steam’s page design can change, and a listing may identify a publisher, a developer, or both. If the linked page does not expose a Follow control, you can still wishlist the game itself; do not treat playing the demo as a substitute for either account action.
No email or mobile alert arrived
- Confirm the full game is on your wishlist, or that you followed the correct developer page.
- Review Steam’s current email and mobile notification preferences.
- Check whether the demo was already available before you took the tracking action; the documented alert is for first-time availability.
- Check spam, filtered mail and mobile notification permissions on the device you use for Steam.
- Allow for client and account changes. Steam says it can send these alerts, not that every account will receive every message under every configuration.
The event hub no longer lists a demo
Search Steam for the game title and open the current full-game listing. You can also open the followed developer’s page and inspect its games. The hub is an event view, while the store and developer pages are the more durable places to check after the edition ends.

Open your Steam Community Profile privacy settings and set wishlist visibility to Everyone, Friends or Private according to your preference. Recheck the setting after major profile changes or when using a different Steam client, because labels and navigation can move.
