Add scene transitions in your streaming software—not in YouTube’s Live Control Room. In OBS Studio, create your scenes, choose a transition in Scene Transitions, and set its duration. Streamlabs Desktop also offers a Motion transition. YouTube Studio’s Go live flow manages the broadcast; the encoder controls how scenes change on air.
Set up scene transitions in OBS Studio
OBS scenes are layouts made from sources such as a game, webcam, device, or media. Build the layouts you need, then choose how viewers move from one to another.
- Create your scenes. In OBS, add a scene for each part of the broadcast—for example, an opening, main content, break, and ending. Add and arrange the sources for each layout. See the OBS guide to scenes and sources.
- Choose a transition. Find the Scene Transitions section in the OBS interface and select an effect. Cut and Fade are available from first launch; other built-in choices include Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe. OBS documents these controls in its Quick Transitions guide.
- Set its duration. Adjust the duration in the transition controls. The appropriate timing depends on the visual style and pace of your broadcast; there is no single duration that suits every stream.
- Switch scenes. Select a scene to apply the chosen transition. If you want to inspect the next layout before it goes live, use Studio Mode, described below.
- Test before broadcasting. Change scenes and check that the effect, timing, and source layouts look as intended. This is especially useful when a transition includes media or a source shared between scenes.
Choose a transition and switching workflow

Transition duration and style are creative choices, not documented guarantees of better retention or engagement. Preview the result with your own scenes and pacing rather than treating a particular effect or timing as universally best.
Preview with Studio Mode
Enable Studio Mode when you want the live scene to remain on air while you prepare another scene in the edit area. Click Transition when the prepared scene is ready to become live. You can also configure Quick Transitions or use a hotkey. OBS notes that viewers cannot see whether Studio Mode is enabled.

Use Motion transitions in Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs Desktop’s documented Motion transition animates sources as scenes change. The setup described in its support guidance is:
- Open the Scene Transition menu and choose Add Transition.
- Select Motion as the transition type.
- Set the duration and acceleration to shape how the motion progresses.
- Check the result with your scene layouts: a source present in both scenes moves between its positions; a source present in only one scene zooms in or out.

Start and manage the YouTube broadcast
Use YouTube Studio’s Go live flow and Live Control Room to create or manage the stream. Configure the scene transition in OBS or Streamlabs Desktop, the encoder sending the broadcast. YouTube’s documented horizontal and vertical live options are platform settings; they do not replace the encoder’s transition controls. See YouTube’s live streaming guidance.
