You can add scenes, graphics, labels, camera and screen content, and web overlays to a live stream using software such as OBS Studio—no hardware video switcher is required. Build scenes from sources, arrange their layers, and use Studio Mode, transitions, or hotkeys to control what viewers see. A green screen is optional and is needed only if you want to remove a camera background with chroma key.

What production software can do instead of a video switcher

A software production application combines separate inputs and graphics into scenes, then sends the chosen scene to the live output. In OBS Studio, sources can include a camera, screen capture, images, text, media, audio, and browser content. You can position, resize, crop, hide, or show sources without physically routing them through a hardware switcher. OBS documents these source types and controls in its Sources Guide.

This approach covers common production needs such as switching between a camera view and a presentation, showing a logo or lower-third label, and displaying a browser-based alert or chat widget. It does not establish that software is faster or performs better than hardware; the official documentation describes capabilities, not a controlled performance comparison.

Build scenes and add production elements in OBS

1. Plan a few repeatable scenes

Create a scene for each distinct moment in the show rather than rebuilding the layout live. A practical starting set is Welcome, Main, Break, and End. OBS’s overview guide also gives examples such as Desktop and Game scenes. Keep the initial set small, then add layouts only when they serve a clear purpose.

2. Add the sources each scene needs

Select a scene, then use the plus button in the Sources dock to add the inputs and graphics. OBS documents browser, image, text, media, video-capture, display-capture, and audio sources. For example, add a Video Capture Source for a camera, Display Capture for a screen, an image source for a logo, and a text source for a name or label. A browser source can show web content such as alerts or chat widgets. See the OBS Sources Guide for the documented source types.

3. Arrange and control the layers

In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear above sources lower in the list. Put a frame, logo, or label above the camera or screen content it should overlay. Reorder sources in the list, then position and resize them in the preview. Crop a source when you want to show only part of it, and use its visibility control to hide or show it without removing it from the scene.

4. Prepare scene changes before showing them

OBS Studio Mode lets you edit or prepare a scene while the current scene remains live, then transition the prepared scene to the output. This is useful for changing a title, adjusting a layout, or checking a source without exposing those edits to viewers. OBS documents built-in Cut and Fade transitions, along with options such as Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe. Hotkeys can switch to a specific scene or hide and show sources. The OBS Studio Overview Guide explains these workflow features.

5. Test the full show flow

Before your first broadcast, preview each scene and test its sources, transitions, and stream smoothness. Check that the intended camera or screen is visible, text and logos are legible, browser elements load, and scene changes reveal the right layout. OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before going live to identify configuration or performance problems; this is setup guidance, not a guarantee about any particular computer or scene.

Choose the right control for each element

Production element OBS approach How you control it
Static logo, frame, or graphic Image source Position and resize it in the scene; toggle visibility or use a different scene when needed.
Name, title, or label Text source Edit the text in the source or prepare a separate scene; use visibility controls or scene changes.
Web alert or chat widget Browser source Show it in the scene where it belongs, or hide it with the source visibility control.
Camera or screen layout Video Capture Source or Display Capture Arrange and crop the input in the scene; prepare a different layout for another show moment.
Change to a different show moment Separate scene Use Studio Mode to prepare and transition, select a transition, or assign a scene hotkey.

OBS identifies browser sources as useful for web pages such as stream alert overlays and chat boxes, and image and text sources for graphics and customizable text. Its browser-source documentation is maintained in the obs-browser README. Interfaces and feature packaging can change, so check the current application if a control appears in a different place.

Adding an overlay with Streamlabs or moving it to OBS

Streamlabs documents three ways to work with overlays: install one from its library, import an existing overlay file, or build scenes manually and add image files as sources. If you want the overlay in OBS, Streamlabs also documents importing a Streamlabs scene collection; that transfer path does not require its plugin. Library contents and product features can change. Follow the current Streamlabs overlay instructions for the option you choose.

When a green screen is—and is not—needed

A green screen is a physical backdrop for a camera effect, not a requirement for adding graphics or switching scenes. If you want to remove a camera background using chroma key, add a webcam as a Video Capture Source and apply OBS’s Chroma Key filter. OBS describes that use in its webcam guide. A green screen backdrop kit is relevant only to that camera-background setup. Static graphics, browser overlays, text, and scene transitions do not require one.

Common problems and fixes

  • A graphic is hidden behind the camera or screen. Move its source higher in the Sources list; higher sources appear above lower ones.
  • A source appears in the wrong scene. Select the scene where it should appear and add or configure the source there. Check that the source’s visibility control is enabled.
  • A browser overlay or chat widget is missing. Confirm that the browser source is present and visible in the intended scene, then check the web content and connection it depends on.
  • An edit appears to viewers before it is ready. Use Studio Mode to prepare the scene separately and transition it to the live output when ready.
  • The camera background remains visible. Chroma key is an optional filter that requires a suitable green-screen setup; it is not applied automatically by adding a webcam source.
  • The broadcast is not smooth or a scene behaves unexpectedly. Test the scenes and settings before going live, as OBS recommends. The documented guides do not establish a specific CPU, latency, or performance advantage for one overlay method over another.
