To accept photos or videos through a public WordPress form, add a file-upload field in a form plugin, limit it to the formats and file size your workflow needs, and check where the plugin saves submissions. The host can impose its own upload-size limit, so a form setting alone cannot guarantee that a large file will upload.
Use a form upload field—not the Media Library alone
The Media Library and editor are WordPress tools for managing media on the site. For visitors to send a photo or video with a form submission, use a form plugin that provides a file-upload field. As one example, WPForms documents a File Upload field and its settings in its File Upload Field guide.
The exact controls and storage behavior depend on the form plugin. Check that plugin’s documentation for its field options, submission handling, and access controls before building the workflow around it.
Configure the form’s upload field
- Create or edit the form. Open your form plugin and select the form that should accept the upload.
- Add a File Upload field. Give it a specific label, such as “Upload a photo of the damaged item” or “Upload your video.” Tell visitors what the file should show and which formats you accept.
- Restrict accepted extensions. Choose only the formats needed for this form. WPForms lists common image formats such as PNG, GIF, and JPG, and video formats such as MPG, MOV, and WMV. Its guide describes an allowed-extension setting for limiting the field. Confirm the exact extensions supported by your plugin and site.
- Set a field-level maximum size. Choose a limit suited to the upload’s purpose, then check the hosting environment’s limit as well. There is no universal maximum that applies to every WordPress site.
- Choose how files are stored. Decide whether uploads should go to the WordPress Media Library or remain in the form plugin’s submission storage. WPForms documents a setting to store uploaded files in the Media Library; other plugins may handle files differently.
- Test a photo and a video. Submit each through the published form and confirm that the entries and files appear in the expected place for administrators.
Check the file-size limits that affect an upload
A successful upload may depend on both the maximum configured in the form field and limits imposed by the server or hosting provider. WordPress’s Media > Add New screen documentation notes that the screen displays the maximum upload size set by the host. A form plugin’s limit does not necessarily override the host’s limit.

- If a small test succeeds but a larger video fails, check the field’s configured maximum and the host’s upload limit.
- If the form displays one limit while the site accepts less, investigate the server or host configuration rather than assuming the field setting is the only constraint.
- Use a limit appropriate to the media visitors actually need to submit; do not advertise an upload size that the form and hosting setup cannot accept together.
Keep accepted file types narrow
WordPress restricts accepted file types by default. WPForms says, “By default, we only allow uploads of safe file types (the same ones allowed by WordPress core).” That is the vendor’s description of its default behavior, not an independent security assessment.
If a required extension is rejected, first check its spelling and the form plugin’s existing settings. Only add types when the workflow genuinely needs them. WPForms documents a separate guide to allowing additional file-upload types; its File Upload Types plugin listing describes a way to change WordPress’s allowed-type list. Treat that broader allowlist as a site configuration decision, and continue to account for host upload limits.

An extension allowlist is not proof that every uploaded file’s contents are safe. Do not treat a browser’s file chooser accepting a selection as confirmation that the server will accept or validate it. Use the form plugin’s documented access controls and handle submitted files according to the sensitivity of the material.
Choose an approach for unsupported formats

Do not broaden the accepted types simply to make the form appear more flexible. If the form plugin already supports the required formats, a separate type-allowlist plugin may not be necessary.

Where to find submitted files
Confirm the destination before publishing the form. If uploads are saved in the WordPress Media Library, WordPress provides tools to manage media there; see its documentation on using image and file attachments. If the form plugin keeps files with its entries instead, follow that plugin’s instructions for retrieving them and controlling access. Do not assume all plugins use the same storage location or permissions.
