First check whether your Blogger theme already outputs Open Graph tags. If it does, add a post-specific Search Description and a suitable image, then verify the rendered post. If it does not, add conditional metadata to the theme’s HTML so individual post pages use their own title, description, URL, and image without assigning article tags to archive and index pages.

What Open Graph tags do on a Blogger post

Open Graph metadata gives social platforms and other link-preview systems information such as a page’s title, type, canonical URL, description, and image. The tags are part of the page’s HTML head; they do not change the visible post content.

Blogger provides template data for page type, page title, and other page values. Its official Layouts Data Tags reference describes pageTitle as the current page’s title, noting: “This is often the blog title, but may contain additional information on archive or post pages.” Use item-page conditions where appropriate so a post’s article metadata is not incorrectly applied to the blog’s index or archive pages.

Check whether your Blogger theme already adds the tags

  1. Open a published post in a browser and view its page source or developer tools.
  2. Search the document’s <head> for og:title, og:type, og:url, og:description, and og:image.
  3. Check that the values describe that specific post, not just the blog or an unrelated page.

Theme behavior varies. In an October 13, 2023 Blogger Community answer, Product Expert Alumni irsah said default themes, especially newer responsive themes such as Soho and Contempo, already deployed Open Graph metadata. Treat that as useful guidance rather than a guarantee: inspect the active theme’s actual output. If suitable tags already exist, do not add a second set that could conflict with them.

What you find What to do
Existing tags with correct, post-specific values Keep the theme tags; provide good post content and verify the preview.
Tags are missing or values are generic or wrong Consider adding or correcting conditional metadata in the theme HTML, then inspect the rendered output.

Prepare the post’s title, description, and image

Open the post in Blogger’s editor and make sure its title is final, its Search Description is available and filled in, and the post has an appropriate image. If Search Description is not available in the post editor, check the blog’s settings for the search-description option. Blogger’s community guidance recommends an image at least 1200 pixels wide and high, but that is a Product Expert recommendation—not an official universal requirement or a guarantee that a platform will show the image.

Add conditional Open Graph metadata to the theme

  1. In Blogger, open the blog’s Theme area and choose the option to edit the theme HTML.
  2. Before changing the template, save a recoverable copy. This is prudent editing practice, not a Blogger requirement documented in the sources cited here.
  3. Find the document’s <head> and inspect nearby metadata to avoid adding duplicates.
  4. If the active theme lacks suitable tags, adapt the following pattern near the existing metadata and before </head>:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
  <meta expr:content='data:blog.pageName' property='og:title'/>
  <meta content='article' property='og:type'/>
</b:if>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.canonicalUrl' property='og:url'/>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.title' property='og:site_name'/>
<b:if cond='data:blog.metaDescription'>
  <meta expr:content='data:blog.metaDescription' property='og:description'/>
</b:if>
<b:if cond='data:blog.postImageThumbnailUrl'>
  <meta expr:content='data:blog.postImageThumbnailUrl' property='og:image'/>
</b:if>

This is a pattern from a 2013 third-party Blogger tutorial, not guaranteed drop-in code for every current theme. Blogger themes and template syntax can vary. Validate it in the active editor and inspect the output after saving. The example uses Blogger’s canonical URL, post title, meta description, and post image thumbnail values; if the theme already defines any of these properties, resolve the duplication rather than leaving competing values.

The reviewed community guidance does not establish that fb:app_id is universally required for ordinary link sharing. If your site uses a Meta integration that requires an app ID, check Meta’s current documentation for that integration rather than adding the property by assumption.

Preview and verify the result

  1. Use Blogger’s post preview to check the post before publication. Blogger documents previewing a post in its post publishing help.
  2. After saving or publishing, inspect the public page’s source and confirm there is one suitable value for each intended Open Graph property.
  3. Check that the title and description are specific to the post, the URL is its canonical URL, and the image points to the intended post image.
  4. Use the preview or sharing-debug tool for the social platform that matters to you. A correct page tag does not guarantee every platform will display a preview identically.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No Open Graph tags appear: The active theme may not emit them, or the edit may not have been saved in the rendered template. Recheck the public page source and the location of the markup inside the head.
  • The preview shows the blog title or wrong description: Check whether the theme uses post-specific values and whether the post has a Search Description. Make sure an older generic tag is not competing with the new value.
  • The image is missing or incorrect: Confirm the post has an image and that the rendered og:image points to the expected image URL. Blogger’s thumbnail value may not suit every theme or platform; validate the actual rendered output.
  • The template editor rejects the markup: Blogger templates use XML-like syntax. Recheck quotes, closing tags, and conditional expressions, and adapt the pattern to the active theme rather than assuming it is universal.
  • Archive or home pages are labeled as articles: Keep the og:type article declaration within an item-page condition so it applies only to posts.
  • Tags appear twice: Remove or adjust the added markup, or the existing theme metadata, so the page does not contain conflicting duplicate properties.
