To add music to an existing screen recording, open the video in an editor, import a music track, place it on the timeline, then trim and adjust it while previewing the result. On an iPhone or iPad, iMovie can add music from the device or a local file; on Mac, use iMovie’s Audio browser or Finder; Clipchamp works on desktop; and Premiere mobile can import audio stored on your phone.
Choose the right workflow
Adding music after recording is an editing task: the screen recording stays on the video track, and the music sits on a separate audio layer. Choose an editor available on your device and a track you can access as either an editor-provided option or a local audio file. Before publishing, confirm that the track is licensed for your intended use.
- iPhone or iPad: iMovie can use music available to the device or audio files in Files.
- Mac: iMovie can browse music in its media browser or use audio files from Finder.
- Desktop: Clipchamp supports imported audio and offers stock music in its Content library.
- Phone with Premiere mobile: Adobe documents importing an audio file from phone storage.
None of these options makes a track available for every account, device, or region. If a track does not appear in a picker, use an accessible local file in a supported format instead.
Add music in iMovie on iPhone or iPad
- Open the project. In iMovie, open the screen-recording project and move to its timeline.
- Browse device music. Tap Add Media, then Audio, then My Music. Preview a track and add it. iMovie places the song at the start and fits it to the project length.
- Or add a local file. Tap Add Media, choose Files, browse to the audio file, and select it. Apple lists M4A, MP4, MP3, WAV, and AIFF as examples of supported file types.
- Set its start point. For a file shorter than one minute, position the playhead where the audio should begin before adding it.
- Preview and adjust. Play the video from the beginning and check that the music starts where you want and does not obscure narration or important screen audio.
Some protected music-library files may not appear in iMovie. Apple also says that using a song purchased from the iTunes Store in a project requires you to be its copyright holder or have express permission from the copyright holder. See Apple’s iMovie audio instructions.

Add music in iMovie on Mac
- Open the project and media browser. In iMovie, open Audio, then Music, to browse music-library tracks.
- Place the track. Drag the selected audio into the timeline. For background music, place it in the music well; to attach a song or sound effect to a particular video clip, place it beneath that clip.
- Use a local file if needed. Drag an audio file from Finder into the timeline.
- Check timing and mix. Play the edited section and reposition or trim the audio so it fits the screen recording. Adjust by listening rather than relying on a universal volume number: the right level depends on the source audio and whether you need to hear narration or other sounds.
Apple’s instructions for both iMovie platforms are at Add songs and other audio files to your iMovie project.
Add music in Clipchamp on desktop
- Import or choose audio. Drag a local audio file into My media, or use Import media. Clipchamp also provides stock music in its Content library.
- Add it to the timeline. Place the audio beneath the screen recording, then move, split, or trim it to fit.
- Preview the edit. Listen through the start, end, and any section with speech or important original audio. Change the placement or volume if the music masks what viewers need to hear.
Available cloud import options can differ between personal and work accounts, so do not assume every import source is available in your account. If an audio file will not import, check that its format is supported. Microsoft’s walkthrough is How to add audio or music to videos.

Import audio in Premiere mobile
- Open the project’s audio import flow. Adobe’s documented flow offers Files and Audio; an alternate route is Music and audio, then Files.
- Choose a file from phone storage. Browse to the audio file and select it. It will appear on the timeline.
- Edit the track. Trim it, adjust its volume, or combine it with other sounds, then preview the screen recording with the audio.
Adobe’s guide, last updated September 22, 2026, is Import audio from your phone to Premiere on mobile.
Recording audio is different from adding music later
If you have not recorded the screen yet, Android’s screen recorder offers a choice about whether to record audio before capture. That setting concerns audio recorded along with the screen; it does not add a separate music track to an existing video. Capture behavior can vary, and the Android guidance does not establish that every device or app can record all internal app audio. To add a chosen song afterward, use an editor and follow one of the timeline workflows above. See Android Help’s screen recording instructions.

Check music rights before publishing
Being able to play or import a song does not mean you have permission to publish it in a video. Check the license for the track and the rules of the platform where you intend to post. Apple notes that protected music-library files may be unavailable in iMovie and sets a permission requirement for using purchased iTunes Store songs in a project. YouTube warns that copyrighted content in Shorts created outside YouTube’s creation tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a copyright removal request; that warning is specific to Shorts and is not a blanket description of every upload. Read YouTube Help’s guidance for enhancing Shorts on Android.
Troubleshoot common problems
The song is missing from the music picker
- Check that the track is downloaded locally rather than available only through a streaming library.
- It may be protected and unavailable to the editor. Try a local audio file you are permitted to use.
The audio file will not import
- Check the editor’s supported audio formats. Apple lists M4A, MP4, MP3, WAV, and AIFF as examples for iMovie; Clipchamp advises confirming that the format is supported.
- Confirm that the file is accessible on the device or account you are using. For Clipchamp, import sources may differ between personal and work accounts.
The music starts at the wrong point or runs too long
- Move the audio clip to the intended timeline position and trim its ends to fit the screen recording.
- In iMovie on iPhone or iPad, set the playhead before adding a file shorter than one minute.
The music masks narration or screen audio
- Preview the full section with speech or other important sound and lower the music until those sounds remain clear.
- There is no universal numeric volume target established for these workflows; judge the mix by listening on the kind of speakers or headphones your audience is likely to use.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded videos rather than edit music into a screen recording, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
