To add another language to a prerecorded YouTube live stream, open the archived video in YouTube Studio on a computer, go to Languages, add the language, then upload a prepared audio-only track under Dub and publish it. This adds an alternate track to the existing video; it does not dub the recording for you or change how an active live broadcast is sent to YouTube.
What you need before you start
- The archived live stream must be available as a video in YouTube Studio.
- Your channel must have access to YouTube’s Advanced features. YouTube’s current Help page lists this as a requirement for multi-language audio: YouTube Help: Add multi-language audio tracks to your videos.
- Prepare the alternate-language audio yourself or arrange for a dubbing provider to create it. YouTube describes multi-language audio as a way to upload your own dubbed tracks; it does not automatically translate or dub the video through this manual workflow.
- Have the dubbed audio as a supported audio-only file, roughly the same length as the video. YouTube’s Help page gives the workflow and file guidance but does not establish a universal exact duration tolerance.
You do not need a particular microphone, interface, encoder, or other hardware to upload the track. Those may be useful for producing the audio, but they are not prerequisites for YouTube Studio’s upload process.
Upload an alternate audio track in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Languages, then choose the archived live stream video.
- Select Add Language and choose the language spoken in the new audio.
- Next to Dub, select Add.
- Select the prepared audio-only file. YouTube says the file should be roughly the same length as the video.
- Select Publish.
YouTube’s documented labels and workflow are described in its multi-language audio instructions. The feature adds a selectable language track to the existing video; it is not a second broadcast or a new live stream.
Manual dubbing and automatic dubbing are different
With manual multi-language audio, you supply the alternate recording. YouTube’s Help documentation states: “Not automatic dubbing: Multi-language audio lets you upload your own dubbed audio tracks.” You can record the translation or hire a dubbing provider; YouTube does not create that track as part of the upload steps.

Automatic dubbing is a separate feature that generates translated audio for eligible creators. Availability and supported languages can vary, so check YouTube’s automatic dubbing information for current eligibility and language details. Manual upload offers control over the recording, while automatic dubbing avoids commissioning or producing every track yourself when the feature is available.
Replace a track or resolve a language conflict
- An automatic dub already exists for the language: delete that automatic dub before uploading your own track for the same language.
- You are replacing a manually uploaded track: open the video’s Languages page, delete the existing language audio, and then upload the replacement.
- The file will not upload or align as expected: confirm it is an audio-only file in a supported format and that its duration is roughly the same as the video. The Help page does not specify a single exact length tolerance that applies to all videos.
Check rights for the alternate audio
Make sure the secondary track does not introduce copyrighted material that differs from the original audio. YouTube says it may remove a secondary track if it detects copyrighted content that differs from the original. Review the multi-language audio guidance and ensure you have the necessary rights to the dubbed speech, music, and other material in the new track.

Should you add another language?
YouTube suggests the feature may suit channels that already receive views from multiple geographies or frequent comments in different languages. Its guidance recommends concentrating on one or two languages and translating video titles and descriptions as well as adding audio tracks. That can help viewers identify the version they can understand without spreading production effort across languages with little demonstrated audience demand.
YouTube reports that creators who uploaded multi-language audio tracks saw over 25% of their watch time come from views in the video’s non-primary language. This is YouTube’s aggregate observation; it is not a forecast or guaranteed result for an individual channel. The accessed Help page does not state the publication year for this statistic.

Archived stream audio is not an active-stream setup
The steps above apply after the live stream is an archived video. An active broadcast uses an encoder workflow: the encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key, and the creator manages the broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube documents that separate process in encoder live-streaming instructions and its live streaming methods overview. Uploading a dubbed track to an archive does not add a language feed to a broadcast already in progress.
