To expand a Nintendo Switch 2’s game storage, use a microSD Express card—look for the microSD EX symbol—with a capacity of up to 2 TB. A regular microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card that lacks the Express standard cannot store Switch 2 games, even if it worked in the original Switch. You’ll need an internet-delivered system update the first time you use an Express card. Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ gives the compatibility rule and first-use requirement.

Which microSD card works with Nintendo Switch 2?

Choose a card that explicitly meets the microSD Express standard. Nintendo’s compatibility rule is: “Any card (up to 2 TB) that meets the microSD Express standard can be used on Nintendo Switch 2.” The card’s capacity or brand name alone does not prove compatibility; look for the microSD EX marking and verify the specific model.

An ordinary microSD card from the original Switch is not an expansion card for Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo allows a limited exception: an older, non-Express card can temporarily provide access to screenshots and videos when transferring data from an original Switch. It does not become usable for Switch 2 games. In other words, “it fits” or “it worked in my old console” is not a compatibility test. The Express designation is the key requirement for adding game-storage capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Switch 2-specific license can make it easier to identify a compatible product, but Nintendo’s stated requirement is the Express standard, not a particular brand or license. Two manufacturer examples are Samsung’s 256GB model MB-MZ256S, identified in its 2025 product sheet as a Switch 2 microSD Express card, and SanDisk’s Switch 2-specific line, which its © 2026 sheet describes as officially licensed. These are examples rather than a complete list of compatible cards. If a product listing emphasizes capacity or speed but does not clearly identify microSD Express, do not infer compatibility from those other specifications.

Before buying, check the exact model and standard on the card packaging or manufacturer’s product information. Nintendo’s rule is standard-based, and cards are sold separately. A Switch 2-specific license is a useful product identifier, not a substitute for checking what standard the card actually meets.

What does an Express card add—and what stays in console memory?

The card adds space for downloaded software, software updates, downloadable content (DLC), screenshots and videos. Game save data remains in the console’s system memory, so installing a larger card does not add more space for saves. This distinction matters if you are trying to solve a particular storage problem: an Express card can provide room for more downloaded software and captures, but it does not expand the space available for save files.

Nintendo lists 256 GB of built-in UFS storage for Switch 2, with some of that capacity reserved by the system. The usable free space you see will therefore be less than the headline built-in capacity, and it will also change as you install content and save captures. Check the free-space figure in HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management before deciding how much additional capacity you need. Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications list the built-in storage.

For a practical choice, think about what you want to store locally rather than treating the largest supported card as a requirement. If you mostly need space for a few downloaded games, a smaller card may be enough; if you plan to keep a larger downloaded library and many captures on the console, more capacity may be useful. Your current free space is a better starting point than the advertised internal-storage figure alone.

How do you install and set up a microSD Express card?

Have a compatible Express card ready, and connect the console to the internet for its first-use update. Follow these steps rather than inserting the card while the console is simply asleep. Nintendo’s support material and illustrated manual show the slot location, insertion direction and first-use update requirement.

  1. Power off the console fully. Do not use sleep mode as a substitute for powering down before inserting the card.
  2. Open the adjustable rear stand. The microSD Express slot is beneath the stand. Nintendo’s illustrated manual shows the card’s insertion direction; follow that diagram instead of guessing the orientation.
  3. Insert the microSD Express card carefully. Use the card only if it meets the Express standard, and do not force it into the slot. If it does not appear to align or seat as shown, stop and check the diagram rather than trying to push it in.
  4. Turn on the console and connect to the internet. Complete the system update prompt required for first use of an Express card. The first-use update is an online system-update requirement, not a reason to choose a different card standard.
  5. Check available space. Open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management to see free space.

If no update prompt appears but an update is needed, the manual route is HOME Menu → System Settings → System → System Update. Nintendo’s FAQ explains the first-use requirement and its support instructions cover the slot and update process. Make sure the console can connect to the internet when setting up an Express card for the first time.

Once the card is inserted, it becomes the default destination for subsequent downloadable software, according to Nintendo. That changes where later software downloads are stored; it should not be read as a promise that the console automatically transfers every game already in internal memory.

Where does Switch 2 save new downloads?

When a microSD Express card is inserted, Nintendo says it becomes the default destination for subsequent downloadable software. The card can hold downloaded games, updates and DLC, as well as screenshots and videos. This makes an Express card useful when you want room for additional downloads without relying only on the console’s built-in storage.

Do not assume that inserting the card automatically moves games already stored in the console’s internal memory. The published guidance establishes the default destination for later downloads; it does not promise automatic relocation of existing installs. Check Data Management for available space and use the console’s available software-management options when you need to manage existing content. If a particular game is already installed internally, do not count on insertion alone to move it.

Also keep the difference between software and save data in mind while managing space. Downloaded software, its updates and DLC can use card storage; the game’s save data remains in system memory. If the card is full, choosing a larger Express card can increase room for supported card content, but it does not change where Nintendo says saves are kept.

How much capacity should you buy?

Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Pick capacity based on your remaining internal free space and how much software and capture data you expect to keep locally; the maximum is a supported limit, not a requirement to buy the largest card. Since some built-in storage is reserved by the system, check the actual free-space number in Data Management before comparing card capacities.

SanDisk’s © 2026 product sheet lists 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions. It estimates those cards can hold about 9, 18 and 36 games, respectively, using an assumed game size of 25GB. Those are SanDisk’s approximations, not Nintendo game-size statistics; actual game sizes vary, and updates, DLC and captures also use storage. Treat the estimates as a rough illustration of how the capacities compare, not a promise of how many games your own library will fit.

The same SanDisk sheet states a read speed of up to 880 MB/s, attributing the figure to the company’s internal testing and warning that device and operating conditions can reduce performance. That is a vendor specification, not a promise that Switch 2 will reach that speed, and it is not a measured Switch 2 game-loading result. Compare cards first on confirmed microSD Express compatibility and capacity. Speed claims should be read with their stated testing conditions in mind.

No current price or comparative reliability ranking is established here, so check the specific card’s listing and seller before buying. A price comparison is useful only after you have established that each listing is for an Express card and identified the exact model. The supported maximum is 2 TB, but a manufacturer’s available lineup may offer different sizes; for example, the SanDisk sheet lists 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Choose among actual available capacities according to your needs, not an assumption that every brand offers every size.

What should you check if Switch 2 does not recognize the card?

Start with compatibility and physical checks before considering formatting. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance recommends the following sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power off the console. Begin with the console switched off before inspecting or reseating the card.
  2. Verify the card standard. Confirm that the card is microSD Express, not an ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card. Check the exact card model and markings rather than relying on its capacity or on the fact that it worked with an original Switch.
  3. Inspect the slot and card contacts for visible debris, and make sure the card is inserted correctly according to Nintendo’s illustration. Do not force the card into the slot.
  4. Consider formatting only after those checks. Formatting permanently erases the card’s contents, including captures that have not been backed up. Console saves remain in system memory, but that does not protect files stored on the card.
  5. Seek console service if multiple Express cards fail. Nintendo directs owners to service when more than one compatible Express card is not recognized.

Nintendo’s card troubleshooting guidance covers recognition checks and the service recommendation. Do not format a card until you have considered what files on it need to be preserved. Formatting is not a harmless compatibility check: it erases card contents. If you have screenshots or videos on the card that you want to keep, back them up before formatting.

What if you replace the card or transfer from an original Switch?

Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card with the console. Its guidance says data can be copied to a larger Express card, but downloads spread across multiple Express cards cannot later be consolidated onto one card. Plan capacity with that limitation in mind if you expect your library to grow. Using several cards as separate destinations may leave you with content divided among them, rather than one larger card that can simply absorb everything later.

If you think you will outgrow your first card, consider that possibility when choosing its capacity. Nintendo’s guidance supports copying data from one Express card to a larger Express card, but it does not say that data distributed over multiple Express cards can be combined later. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether to buy one card with more room or spread downloads across more than one.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

For a move from an original Switch, use Nintendo’s system-transfer process. Digital software downloads onto the target console after transfer; an older non-Express card may temporarily supply screenshots and videos, but it cannot provide Switch 2 game storage. Keep captures you want before formatting or repurposing any card. The old card’s limited capture role is separate from the new console’s game-storage expansion: you still need microSD Express for that.

How do the documented card options compare?

The available manufacturer information supports model and capacity comparisons, but not a price or performance ranking for Switch 2. Confirm the exact model and Express marking before purchase. The following examples have manufacturer documentation; they are not the only potentially compatible products.

Card line Documented capacity or model What the manufacturer states
Samsung microSD Express 256GB; model MB-MZ256S Samsung’s 2025 product sheet identifies it as a Switch 2 microSD Express card.
SanDisk microSD Express for Switch 2 256GB, 512GB and 1TB SanDisk’s © 2026 sheet describes the line as officially licensed; its game-count estimates assume 25GB per game.

These are examples, not an exhaustive list of compatible brands. Nintendo’s compatibility rule is based on the microSD Express standard and capacity limit. A Switch 2 license is one way to identify a product, but the listed examples do not establish that other Express cards are incompatible.

For a fair comparison, check five things: whether the exact card meets microSD Express; whether the capacity matches the amount of additional room you need; whether the model is clearly identified by the manufacturer; whether the merchant appears authentic; and the current price. The price and seller can change, so verify them when you shop. No benchmark here establishes that a particular brand is faster or more reliable in actual Switch 2 use, and a manufacturer’s advertised speed is not a console performance guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Switch 2 require a card that is officially licensed for the console?

Nintendo’s compatibility statement specifies the microSD Express standard and a capacity limit of up to 2 TB; it does not state that a Switch 2-specific license is required. Verify that the exact card model meets the Express standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 2 TB limit apply to all microSD cards?

Nintendo’s stated limit is for cards meeting the microSD Express standard. A 2 TB capacity rating by itself does not make an ordinary microSD card suitable for Switch 2 game storage.

Does SanDisk’s 880 MB/s figure tell me how fast games will load?

No. SanDisk labels that figure as an up-to read-speed result based on its internal testing, and notes that device and conditions can lower performance. It is not a Switch 2 game-loading measurement.

Can I use my original Switch’s microSD card for Switch 2 games?

No, not if it is an ordinary microSD card. Switch 2 game storage requires microSD Express. Nintendo’s limited exception for an older non-Express card is temporary access to screenshots and videos when transferring from an original Switch.

Can I use multiple microSD Express cards with my console?

Nintendo recommends using one Express card. Data can be copied to a larger Express card, but downloads distributed across multiple Express cards cannot later be consolidated onto one card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will adding a card increase space for game saves?

No. An Express card can store downloaded software, updates, DLC and captures, but game save data remains in the console’s system memory.

Does inserting the card move games already installed on the console?

Nintendo says the inserted card becomes the default destination for subsequent downloadable software. That does not establish that existing installations automatically move when you insert it.

What should I do before formatting a card that is not recognized?

First power off, verify that it is microSD Express, and inspect the slot and card contacts for visible debris. Formatting permanently erases card contents, including captures that have not been backed up; saves remain in console memory.

Do I need to buy a card reader to install a new Express card?

No card reader is needed to insert a new card into the console. Nintendo’s installation instructions use the console’s card slot; no particular reader is required for the setup described here.

The Bottom Line

For Nintendo Switch 2 game-storage expansion, buy a genuine card that clearly meets the microSD Express standard, up to 2 TB. Power the console off before inserting it under the rear stand, then connect to the internet for the first-use update. The card can store downloads, updates, DLC and captures; saves stay in system memory. Check Data Management for free space, and back up captures before formatting or replacing a card.
