You can pair a supported Matter accessory in Apple Home with an iPhone or iPad, then assign it to a room. An iPhone running iOS 18 or later can also pair and control supported Matter devices locally without a home hub—but Apple Home automations and remote access still require a configured hub. If you want a sensor or schedule to trigger an action, set up a compatible HomePod or Apple TV as a hub before building the automation.

What do you need before setting up Matter in Apple Home?

Check three things first: whether Apple Home supports the accessory’s category, whether its connection uses Wi-Fi or Thread, and whether your setup needs a home hub. Matter compatibility alone does not guarantee that every advertised feature or device category will appear in Apple Home. Check the product’s Apple Home compatibility details and its connection type before pairing. Apple’s Matter setup guidance lists the supported categories and setup requirements.

It also helps to decide what you want the accessory to do. A light that you plan to control manually has different setup needs from a motion sensor that should turn on a light while you are away. For an automation, confirm that you have a home hub and that the accessory exposes the sensor or control function you intend to use in Apple Home. This avoids treating “it pairs successfully” as proof that every planned feature will work.

Apple Home’s supported Matter categories

Apple lists air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature and humidity sensors. A device may expose only some of its functions in Home, so confirm the specific product’s Apple Home support rather than relying only on a Matter label.

For example, the category list can help you establish whether a motion sensor or smart plug is in a supported class, but it does not promise that every mode or feature advertised by a particular manufacturer is available in Home. Look for explicit Apple Home compatibility information for the product and check whether its instructions require a manufacturer app, firmware update, or a particular network type. Keep any setup instructions and pairing code available while you work.

When is a home hub required?

For local pairing and control, Apple’s May 7, 2026 pairing instructions allow an iPhone on iOS 18 or later to add and control supported Matter accessories without a hub. That does not remove the hub requirement for Home automations or remote access. Apple’s home-hub page, dated September 15, 2025, still says a hub is required to add Matter accessories; for the newer, specific hub-free pairing exception, follow the later pairing instructions. See Apple’s pairing guidance.

In practical terms, separate the question “Can I pair and control this accessory here?” from “Can Home run an automation for it?” An iPhone may provide local pairing and control for supported accessories, but it is not a substitute for configuring a home hub when your goal is an automation or remote access. If you want a schedule to run while you are away, or a sensor to trigger another accessory through Home, plan for a hub.

If you already own a compatible HomePod or Apple TV, you may not need to buy anything. HomePod mini and HomePod become hubs during setup. An Apple TV becomes one when assigned to a room in Home. To check the current hub status, open Home > More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges. Only the Home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV as a hub. Apple’s home-hub instructions cover the setup and account requirements.

Before buying hardware, compare what you already have with what the intended automation needs. Check that the model can serve as a Home hub, that it is assigned to the correct Home, and—if the accessory uses Thread—that the setup has a suitable Thread path. A hub that supports automation and a Thread border router are related but not always interchangeable requirements: a third-party Thread border router can provide Thread connectivity, but it does not itself replace Apple’s home-hub requirement for Home automations.

Check Thread support for the exact device

Thread accessories need a suitable Thread connection. Apple identifies HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation) and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as devices with built-in Thread. Do not assume the Wi-Fi-only third-generation Apple TV has built-in Thread. A compatible third-party Thread border router may provide Thread connectivity, but it does not replace Apple’s home-hub requirement for automations. Check Apple’s current hub and Thread guidance.

Thread and Wi-Fi are the accessory’s possible network transports in this setup; check the product details rather than guessing from its shape or brand. If the accessory is Thread-based, make sure the relevant Thread path is available before treating a pairing-code problem as the cause. If it is Wi-Fi-based, follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions for joining the network. The exact Apple TV configuration matters: the third-generation Wi-Fi + Ethernet model is the one Apple lists with built-in Thread, not the Wi-Fi-only variant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple also says qualifying Thread-enabled iPhones can locally pair and control Thread accessories. Its Thread alert names iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or later on iOS 18, and notes that some battery-powered accessories may need a manufacturer firmware update. Treat that capability as local pairing and control, not as a replacement for a hub when you want Home automations. Apple’s Matter setup page.

When comparing equipment, use the exact setup you need: existing equipment versus a new hub, Wi-Fi versus Thread transport, a built-in Thread radio in the exact Apple TV variant versus a separate compatible border router, support for the accessory’s Home category, and any firmware or setup prerequisites. A purchase may be unnecessary if your existing devices already meet those needs.

How do you add a Matter accessory to Apple Home?

Have the accessory powered and ready, your pairing iPhone or iPad updated, and the Apple Account you intend to use for the Home signed in. If you plan to automate the accessory, configure the hub first. For Thread devices, confirm the required Thread connectivity before troubleshooting a pairing code.

  1. Create or open your Home. Open Home on the iPhone or iPad. On first launch, follow the prompts to create a home and add rooms. Use the Apple Account associated with that Home. Apple’s setup instructions.
  2. Start accessory setup. In Home, tap Add > Add Accessory. For a new Matter accessory, follow the prompts to scan its setup QR code or use the proximity flow when offered.
  3. Use the multi-ecosystem flow for an already-paired device. If the accessory is already paired in another app, tap More Options, select the accessory, then obtain the additional pairing code in its existing app as directed. Do not assume the original QR code is the right cross-ecosystem procedure. Apple explains the previously paired-device flow.
  4. Finish setup and organize it. Complete the prompts, give the accessory a recognizable name and assign it to a room. Then try controlling it in Home before making it part of a scene or automation.
  5. Check its connection if needed. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Matter Accessories to see paired Matter accessories and inspect their connected services. Apple’s Matter accessory instructions.

For a new accessory, use the setup route Apple presents for that device, including the QR scan or proximity prompt if offered. For a device already in another ecosystem, use the additional pairing code supplied through that accessory’s existing app. Those are distinct situations; reusing the original QR code is not necessarily the right way to add an already-paired device to another service.

Once the accessory appears in Home, give it a name that makes sense in voice commands and automation lists, and put it in the room where it is installed. Then test basic control in Home. If it is a sensor, confirm that Home can see the relevant event; if it is a light or outlet, try the intended on/off state. This gives you a useful checkpoint before you add more steps, such as grouping it in a scene or using it as an automation trigger.

How do you create a scene and an automation?

A scene applies chosen settings to several accessories together; an automation runs an action in response to a trigger such as motion, a schedule or a person arriving. A scene can be the action that an automation runs. Apple’s scenes and automations guide provides the available setup paths.

That distinction is useful when deciding how to structure a setup. If you want a group of lights to change together whenever you choose, create a scene. If you want something to happen automatically when a condition occurs, create an automation. You can make the automation run a scene, so that one trigger activates a set of accessory states rather than requiring you to specify the same group action separately.

Create a scene for a group of accessories

  1. In Home, tap Add > Add Scene.
  2. Choose a suggested scene or select Custom, then select the accessories it should control.
  3. Adjust each accessory’s desired state. Use Test This Scene to check the configured actions, then save.

Apple describes the purpose directly: “With scenes, you can control multiple accessories at the same time.” — Apple Support, scenes-and-automations guidance dated September 15, 2025. Read the guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check each selected accessory’s state before saving. A scene is a group action, not a trigger: it will not run automatically until you invoke it or select it as an action in an automation. Testing the scene helps you confirm that its chosen accessories respond as configured before you rely on it as part of a trigger-based routine.

Make a motion sensor turn on lights

  1. In Home, tap Add > Add Automation > A Sensor Detects Something.
  2. Select the paired motion sensor and choose the detection event offered for it.
  3. Choose the lights to control, or choose a scene you have already created. Set the desired state for those accessories and save.
  4. Use Test This Automation if Home presents that option.

This setup depends on the sensor being paired and visible in Home, and on a configured home hub for the automation. If the sensor is connected but its event is not available, check whether the particular product’s supported Apple Home functions include the feature you want. If you use a scene as the response, create and test that scene first so the automation has a known set of actions to run.

The same automation flow offers other triggers. Choose An Accessory is Controlled for an on/off or open/close event, A Time of Day Occurs for a schedule, or People Arrive and People Leave for arrival and departure. Presence triggers depend on the participants’ Share My Location configuration. Apple’s automation instructions.

Match the trigger to the event you actually want: a time-based automation for a schedule, a sensor event for motion or another supported sensor condition, a controlled accessory for an on/off or open/close change, or a people trigger for arrival and departure. Do not assume a presence trigger will work without the relevant participants’ location-sharing configuration. Use the testing option if Home offers it, and check both the trigger and the resulting accessory state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pause or remove an automation

Open the Automation tab, select the automation and switch off Enable This Automation to pause it. The same view provides a deletion option. For an accessory switched on by an automation, Apple also describes setting a Turn Off duration. See Apple’s automation options.

Pausing is useful when you want to stop a routine temporarily without rebuilding it. If an automation turns an accessory on, a Turn Off duration can be part of the accessory action when that option is available. If the result is not what you intended, review the selected trigger, the chosen accessories or scene, and the states you configured before deleting the automation.

Why does Apple Home say “Thread Border Router Required”?

That alert means Home cannot find the Thread connection needed for the accessory’s setup path. Check the Thread path and pairing prerequisites before replacing a device or resetting the network. Apple’s Thread troubleshooting instructions describe these checks.

  • Confirm that the accessory and the pairing device have an appropriate Thread connection for this setup.
  • Check that Bluetooth is enabled on the iPhone, and check for any manufacturer firmware update required by the accessory.
  • Verify that the relevant hub is powered, connected and using the intended Apple Account.
  • Restart a Thread-enabled hub if the connection remains unavailable.
  • In the specific pairing-failure case Apple describes, check whether an Ethernet-connected Apple TV needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network as the phone.

“Needs Thread Network” and “Thread Border Router Required” can reflect a missing network path rather than an incorrect Matter code. Follow the checks for the accessory and hub combination you have; do not treat a network reset or a new purchase as the first fix. Apple’s troubleshooting page.

Work through the setup path before changing equipment: confirm the accessory uses Thread, check that a suitable Thread connection is present, verify Bluetooth and firmware where applicable, and make sure the hub is powered and connected. If setup fails with an Ethernet-connected Apple TV, Apple calls out checking whether that Apple TV needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network as the phone in that specific scenario. This is a targeted check, not a reason to change network settings in every case.

What should you check if the hub or automation is not working?

Start in Home’s hub list, then verify the hub’s software, power and network connection. Apple also identifies account security settings as prerequisites for hub setup.

  • Open Home > More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges and check whether the intended HomePod or Apple TV appears as connected.
  • Update and restart the hub, and confirm that it is powered and connected to the home network.
  • Check that iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication for the Apple Account are enabled.
  • Confirm that the person configuring the hub is the Home owner.

If the accessory was paired in another ecosystem, inspect its connected services under Settings > General > Matter Accessories before removing a pairing. Removing a service also removes that app’s control of the accessory. Apple’s hub guidance and Matter accessory guidance describe these checks.

If an accessory is controllable but an automation does not run, check the automation’s trigger and action as separate parts. Confirm that the selected sensor or accessory is the one you intended, that the event is available for that device, and that the action points to the correct light, accessory or scene. Then check hub status and the home network. A scene that works when tested but does not run automatically points you back toward the automation trigger and hub rather than the scene’s basic accessory settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not remove an existing connected service casually when a Matter device is shared between ecosystems. First inspect the connected-services list. Removing one service also removes that app’s control, so make sure you understand which app or Home is affected before proceeding.

What is the practical setup order?

For the fewest avoidable setup problems, decide what you want the accessory to do, confirm its Apple Home category and connection type, establish any required hub or Thread path, pair it, and then create its scene or automation. Pairing success alone does not establish that a chosen trigger, accessory function or advertised feature is available in Apple Home.

  • Local control only: an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can pair and locally control supported Matter accessories without a hub.
  • Automations or remote access: configure a compatible HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub.
  • Thread accessory: confirm a suitable Thread connection; verify the exact Apple TV model and network arrangement rather than assuming every Apple TV 4K includes Thread.
  • Already paired elsewhere: use Home’s More Options flow and the additional code provided by the existing app.

For a straightforward manual-control setup, open or create the Home, pair the supported accessory, assign its room and name, and test it. For an automation, add the hub and relevant Thread requirements to that plan before pairing, then create and test a scene if you want a group of actions, followed by the trigger-based automation. If you already have suitable equipment, start there rather than assuming you need to purchase another hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a HomePod to use Matter in Apple Home?

Not necessarily. An iPhone running iOS 18 or later can locally pair and control supported Matter accessories without a hub. A HomePod or compatible Apple TV configured as a home hub is required for Home automations and remote access. A HomePod is one hub option, not the only one.

Can I add Matter devices to Apple Home without a hub?

Apple’s May 7, 2026 pairing instructions allow an iPhone on iOS 18 or later to add and locally control supported Matter accessories without a hub. This is not a replacement for a hub when you want Apple Home automations or remote access.

How do I add a Matter device that is already paired in another app?

In Home, tap Add, then Add Accessory, and choose More Options. Select the accessory and get the additional pairing code in its existing app as directed. The original QR code is not necessarily the right cross-ecosystem setup method.

How do I make a motion sensor turn on lights in Apple Home?

Pair the sensor and lights first, and configure a compatible home hub. In Home, tap Add > Add Automation > A Sensor Detects Something, select the sensor and event, choose the lights or a scene, set the desired state, and save. Use Test This Automation if Home offers it.

Why does Apple Home say “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”?

Home may not have the Thread connection needed for the accessory’s setup path. Check that the accessory and pairing device have a suitable Thread path, Bluetooth is enabled on the iPhone, any needed manufacturer firmware is installed, and the relevant hub is powered and connected. Apple also recommends restarting a Thread-enabled hub; in a specific pairing-failure case, check whether an Ethernet-connected Apple TV needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network as the phone.

Does the Wi‑Fi-only Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) have built-in Thread?

Apple lists the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet model as having built-in Thread. Do not assume the Wi-Fi-only version is equivalent for Thread connectivity.

Can an iPad pair a Matter accessory with Apple Home?

Yes. Apple’s setup instructions include iPhone and iPad. The hub-free local-pairing exception is specifically described for an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, so do not assume an iPad alone replaces a home hub for automation setup.

What happens if I remove a connected service from a Matter accessory?

The app associated with that service loses control of the accessory when its connection is removed. Check the connected-services list before removing anything, particularly if the device is shared across smart-home ecosystems.

Can I use a scene as an automation action?

Yes. A scene groups accessory settings, while an automation runs an action in response to a trigger. Create and test the scene, then select it as the response in an automation if that option fits your setup.

What should I check if an automation does not run?

Check that a compatible HomePod or Apple TV appears in Home Hubs & Bridges, is powered and connected, and is up to date. Then review the automation’s trigger, selected accessory or scene, and intended action. For people-arrival or departure triggers, check the participants’ Share My Location configuration.

The Bottom Line

Start by confirming the accessory’s Apple Home category and whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread. An iPhone on iOS 18 or later can locally pair and control supported Matter devices without a hub, but Home automations and remote access still call for a configured home hub. Use the correct multi-ecosystem flow for devices already paired elsewhere, test basic control before building a scene or automation, and check the exact Thread-capable equipment rather than assuming every Apple TV variant includes Thread.
