To add live chat to a Drupal site, create an account with a hosted chat provider, install that provider’s Drupal integration (or use its embed method), enter the widget credentials in Drupal, set page and audience rules, and test the result while logged in and logged out. Installing a module by itself does not create a chat service: the provider account and its hosted widget are still required.
The exact procedure depends on the integration. Chatlio and tawk.to have documented Composer-based modules for current Drupal releases; Alive5 uses a Widget ID; Drift documents Drupal 9, 10, and 11 compatibility; and LiveChat’s vendor instructions describe an older Drupal 8.x plugin path. Check the stated core range and maintenance status before enabling anything on a production site.
What you need before adding chat
- Drupal administrator access to install modules and change configuration.
- SSH and Composer access if you are installing a Drupal.org module through Composer. Use the same deployment process as the rest of your site and commit the resulting
composer.jsonandcomposer.lockchanges. - A provider account. Chatlio and tawk.to explicitly require their own accounts. The Drupal module is a bridge to the provider’s hosted service, not a complete self-hosted chat server.

Choose only an integration whose documented core range includes your site. A provider can still support Drupal through a manual script even when an old module does not, but that is a different implementation and should be documented and tested separately.

Universal installation workflow
1. Confirm Drupal core and deployment method
In the administrator interface, go to Reports > Status report and note the Drupal core version. If your site is managed with Composer, run composer show drupal/core-recommended from the project root and use the version recorded in your lock file. Do not install a module whose declared core range excludes your version merely because the administration page allows an upload.
Make a database and file backup, and perform the first installation on staging. A chat widget is front-end JavaScript, but its module can still change configuration and dependencies.
2. Create and configure the hosted provider account
Sign up with the provider you selected, create a property or site in its dashboard, and configure the widget there. Chatlio requires a Chatlio account and an embed code. tawk.to requires a tawk.to account and a selected widget. Alive5 requires a Widget ID. Drift’s documented process starts by configuring the widget in Drift before enabling account configuration in Drupal.

Record the exact property, site, widget, or workspace you intend to connect. Selecting the wrong property can make a correctly installed widget appear to be missing or send conversations to the wrong team.
3. Install the Drupal integration with Composer
From the Drupal project root, use the provider’s documented package command. For Chatlio’s documented 1.1 line:
composer require 'drupal/chatlio:^1.1'
For tawk.to’s documented 3.0 line:
composer require 'drupal/tawk_to:^3.0'
Composer resolves dependencies and updates the lock file. Commit both files, deploy them through your normal pipeline, then enable the module at Extend. If your hosting platform does not permit Composer commands on production, run Composer in your build environment and deploy the resulting code; do not edit the vendor directory manually.
4. Enable the module and enter provider credentials
Go to Extend, find the installed module, select it, and click Install. Then use the provider-specific configuration path:

- Start a conversation, send a reply, close the chat, and reload the page to check that the widget initializes only once.
- Check the browser console for JavaScript errors and inspect the page source or DOM for duplicate provider scripts.
Test with Drupal caches enabled and with your production aggregation settings. A widget that works only with development settings is not ready for deployment.

1. Chatlio: a documented Drupal 10.3/11 Composer path
Chatlio is suitable when your site runs Drupal 10.3 or Drupal 11 and you want a module that accepts the provider’s embed code through Drupal configuration. The documented 1.1.0 release declares ^10.3 || ^11 compatibility.
Install it with composer require 'drupal/chatlio:^1.1', enable the module, and open /admin/config/services/chatlio. 2. tawk.to: widget selection and extra settings
tawk.to’s documented 3.0.3 release supports Drupal 10 and 11. Install the module with composer require 'drupal/tawk_to:^3.0', enable it, and go to /admin/config/services/tawk_to/widget. Sign in to your tawk.to account, select the site or widget, and save the configuration.

These are useful when different departments own different sections of a site: for example, show the widget on support content types, include authenticated customers, and exclude internal editorial paths. Controlling visibility without breaking the site
Display rules are more than a cosmetic setting. They determine who can open a conversation, which teams receive it, and whether the script loads on pages where it is not useful.
- Path rules: include exact support paths first, then add wildcard sections only after testing.
- Roles: if chat is for customers, test anonymous visitors and every authenticated customer role. Exclude administrator and content-editor roles if internal users should not create customer conversations.
