Steam Frame can run Android APKs locally through SteamOS and its Lepton Android compatibility layer. The supported sideload method is to enable Developer Mode, pair the headset with a computer, and upload the APK with Valve’s SteamOS Devkit Client. The uploaded title becomes a Library > Non-Steam entry.

Valve documents uploading and launching, but not a consumer-facing update or uninstall button for manually sideloaded APKs. To update, upload the newer build through the same Devkit workflow. Package-level replacement and removal with adb are community procedures, so use them carefully and expect commands or helper tools to change with SteamOS and Lepton updates.

What you need before sideloading

Prepare the headset, computer, APK, and connection before opening the Devkit Client. The official workflow assumes that the app is distributed as an Android APK and that its behavior is compatible with Steam Frame’s hardware and Lepton runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steam Frame headset: It runs SteamOS and provides a local Android runtime based on Lepton.
  • Developer Mode: This exposes the development and ADB access needed for pairing and troubleshooting.
  • SteamOS Devkit Client: Install and launch it on your computer.
  • APK folder: Put the APK in a folder you can select in the client. The upload operation sends the selected folder recursively.
  • Correct APK filename: You will enter this exact filename as the Devkit start command.
  • Data-capable USB-C cable: A cable that carries only power cannot transfer ADB data. A wired connection is especially useful during long development sessions.
  • Android SDK Platform Tools: Install these if you need the adb command. Valve specifically points to Platform Tools for users who do not already have ADB.

Keep a backup of important app data before replacing files or using package-management commands. Sideloaded apps are not automatically covered by the same installation, update, or cloud-save behavior as a Steamworks-distributed title.

Official Devkit upload or community ADB tools?

Use the Devkit Client for the supported installation and launch path. Use ADB or a helper utility only when you need package-level operations that Valve does not expose in the normal library interface.

Criterion SteamOS Devkit Client ADB or community helper tooling
Primary purpose Upload and start a local title Manage an installed Android package, including replacement or removal
Setup effort Enable Developer Mode, pair a host, then configure a title Install Platform Tools, establish an ADB connection, and identify the exact package ID
Steam library shortcut Yes. The upload creates a Devkit Game entry under Library > Non-Steam Not necessarily. Package commands operate below the library-shortcut level
Update workflow Upload the newer APK through the title workflow and start it again Some community notes describe replacing an existing package’s APK
Uninstall workflow No public Valve-documented uninstall command for manually sideloaded APKs adb uninstall <package> is documented in unofficial frame-control notes
Support status Valve-documented Unofficial and sensitive to SteamOS, Lepton, and helper-tool changes
Main risk Incorrect title settings or an APK that is incompatible with the runtime Removing the wrong package, losing app data, or breaking a procedure after an update

How to add an Android APK with the SteamOS Devkit Client

This is the repeatable, Valve-documented route for putting an APK into the headset’s Steam library.

  1. Enable Developer Mode on Steam Frame

On the headset, open Settings > System > Developer Mode and turn Developer Mode on. Without it, the development host cannot pair and ADB access is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Pair the computer

Still on the headset, open Settings > Developer > Pair new host and confirm the pairing request. Leave the headset available while you connect from the computer.

  3. Open the Devkits tab

Launch the SteamOS Devkit Client on the computer. Open the Devkits tab and connect to the headset by its IP address or hostname.

  4. Choose Title Upload

After the headset appears as a development target, select Title Upload. This opens the fields that define the library entry and the command used to start it.

  5. Enter the library name

Set Name to the title you want displayed in the headset library. This is the human-readable name of the generated entry; it does not have to be the APK filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. Select the local folder

Set Local Folder to the folder containing the APK. Valve’s guide says the client uploads that folder recursively, so keep any files the app needs inside the selected folder and check that you have selected the intended directory.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
    • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
    • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
    • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
    • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
    • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  7. Set the start command and runtime

In Start Command, enter the APK’s filename exactly, including its extension. Set Runtime to Android. The runtime selection tells the Devkit environment to execute the file through the Android compatibility layer rather than as a native Linux executable.

  8. Upload and start

Click Upload and wait for the transfer to finish. Click Start in the client to launch immediately. The uploaded title is also added to the headset at Library > Non-Steam as a Devkit Game entry.

Valve describes the resulting location as “Library > Non-Steam > Devkit Game: (Your Game Title).”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the title does not appear, allow the upload to complete, reconnect the Devkit Client, and check that the selected folder and start-command filename match the APK on disk.

How to launch and close the sideloaded app

Launch from the Devkit Client

For a quick test after uploading, select the title in the Devkit Client and click Start. This avoids navigating the headset library while you are checking whether the APK opens.

Launch from Steam Frame

On the headset, open Library > Non-Steam, locate the generated Devkit Game entry, and select it. The entry uses the name you supplied in the Devkit Client.

Close the app

Steam Support says running applications can be quit through their conventional menus or controls. You can also open the dashboard, select the running application, and choose Close. If an app stops responding to its own exit control, use the dashboard’s application-close action rather than immediately disconnecting power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to update a sideloaded APK

There is no Valve-documented consumer “Update APK” button for a manually sideloaded library entry. The safest supported interpretation of Valve’s upload workflow is to send the newer APK through the same title configuration.

  1. Prepare the replacement build

Place the newer APK in the local folder you intend to upload. Confirm its filename before changing the Devkit settings.

  2. Stop the old app

Close the running application from its own menu or from the dashboard. Updating while the app is active can leave files in use and makes it harder to tell whether the new build actually launched.

  3. Open the existing Devkit target

In the Devkit Client, connect to the headset through the Devkits tab and choose Title Upload. Use the same library name if you want to keep a single recognizable entry.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Point the upload at the newer APK

Set Local Folder to the folder containing the new file, set Start Command to that APK’s exact filename, and keep Runtime set to Android.

  5. Upload and test

Click Upload, then Start. Test the app before deleting the older local APK or changing other files. If the library shows more than one Devkit entry, use the name and upload configuration to distinguish them instead of removing files blindly.

Unofficial frame-control notes describe a more package-oriented method in which replacing the APK for an existing app updates that app’s build. Treat that procedure as community guidance, not a Valve guarantee. SteamOS or Lepton changes may alter the paths, helper controls, or behavior. Back up app data before replacing an installed package.

What an update does not guarantee

  • An APK can install successfully and still fail after an update because of architecture, graphics/API, input, permission, or Lepton differences.
  • Replacing an APK does not establish that the app’s data will be preserved; make a backup first.
  • A newer file is not necessarily a compatible file. Keep the previous build available until the replacement has launched and passed the checks you need.

How to uninstall a sideloaded Android app

Valve’s public Steam Frame material does not document a library-level uninstall command for manually sideloaded APKs. Removing a Non-Steam shortcut is therefore not the same as removing the Android package. The unofficial frame-control notes describe package removal through ADB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ADB removal procedure

  1. Enable Settings > System > Developer Mode on the headset. Developer Mode enables SSH/ADB access.

  2. Install Android SDK Platform Tools on the computer if adb is not already available.

  3. Connect to the headset using a supported ADB path. For a USB connection, use a USB-C cable that supports data as well as power; a charge-only cable cannot carry the ADB transfer.

  4. Make sure the app is stopped. Close it from its own controls or with the dashboard’s Close action.

  5. Identify the exact Android package ID. Do not substitute the library title or APK filename unless it is also the package ID.

  6. Run the package-removal command with the exact identifier: adb uninstall <package>.

  7. Check the headset library and the app’s data state after the command completes. A Devkit shortcut may need separate cleanup if it remains visible even though the package is gone.

The command and the helper-tool remove action come from unofficial notes and can change with SteamOS or Lepton releases. A typo in the package ID can remove a different package, while an interrupted operation can leave a stale library entry. When in doubt, stop and verify the identifier before confirming removal.

The host cannot pair

Open the Devkits tab, choose the headset by IP address or hostname, and confirm the pairing request on the headset. If the client is pointed at an old address, reconnect using the current address shown by the headset.

The cable charges but ADB does not connect

Replace a charge-only cable with a USB-C cable rated for data and power. Installing Platform Tools does not make a power-only cable carry data.

The Devkit upload fails or the app does not start

  • Verify that Local Folder points to the folder that actually contains the APK.
  • Check capitalization, spacing, and the .apk extension in Start Command.
  • Confirm that Runtime is set to Android.
  • Wait for Upload to finish before pressing Start.
  • Try launching the generated entry from Library > Non-Steam after reconnecting the client.

The app opens but is unusable

Successful APK deployment does not prove application compatibility. Check whether the app expects a different CPU architecture, graphics or API behavior, touch-only input, permissions that are unavailable in the headset context, or Android behavior that Lepton does not currently reproduce. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that another Android app runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The update appears not to have installed

Close the old process, verify that the newer APK is the one selected in Local Folder, make its filename the Start Command, and upload again. If you use package replacement from community tooling, consult the version-specific instructions for that tool and keep a backup of the previous build and app data.

Compatibility limits you should expect

Steam Frame’s Android support is a platform capability, not a promise that every APK will work. Compatibility is affected by:

  • CPU architecture: The headset supports native ARM64 execution, but an APK may depend on a different architecture or on native libraries that are absent.
  • Graphics and API assumptions: Rendering paths, drivers, and Android API behavior can differ from a phone or tablet.
  • Input model: An app designed around a touchscreen, sensors, or phone-specific gestures may not map cleanly to headset controls.
  • Permissions: Apps requesting hardware, storage, location, notification, or other permissions may behave differently in the Lepton environment.
  • Lepton behavior: The compatibility layer determines which Android services and system behaviors are available.

Test the exact APK build you intend to use. An app that installs, launches, or worked on an earlier SteamOS release is not proof that a different version will behave the same way.

Do not confuse local sideloading with Steamworks distribution

Valve describes a separate path for publishers shipping an Android title through Steamworks. That route requires an Android depot, a top-level APK configured as the executable, and an Android launch option. It is a publishing configuration, not a replacement for the local Devkit upload steps in this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For personal testing or a locally supplied APK, use Developer Mode and the SteamOS Devkit Client. For a packaged commercial release, follow the Steamworks Android-depot requirements instead of treating a Devkit Game entry as a finished store deployment.

A practical maintenance checklist

  • Keep the original APK and a copy of app data before replacing or removing anything.
  • Record the library name, APK filename, runtime setting, and package ID for each sideloaded app.
  • Use the official Devkit upload path for routine installation and relaunching.
  • Use ADB package commands only when you specifically need package-level update or removal controls.
  • Label community instructions in your own notes as version-sensitive and recheck them after SteamOS or Lepton updates.
  • After every upload, launch the app from Library > Non-Steam and verify input, graphics, permissions, and saved data.
