To add Halo weapons and armor to Fallout: New Vegas without crashing, use a reversible Mod Organizer 2 profile, install xNVSE in the game folder beside FalloutNV.exe, build the stability layer first, and test the Halo mod on a disposable save. What a safe Halo installation looks like
A safe setup separates three things:
- The game root: the folder containing
FalloutNV.exe. xNVSE belongs here. - The virtual Data directory: MO2 supplies this to the game at launch. Ordinary Halo meshes, textures, animations, scripts, and plugin files belong in an MO2 mod entry.
- Your saves: long-term saves should not be used for first tests. Use a new test character or a disposable profile until the equipment survives every check.
This arrangement makes removal practical. You can disable the Halo mod, restore the original profile, and leave your established load order and saves untouched. Installing files directly into the physical Data folder removes that safety net and makes conflicts harder to identify.
Check your Fallout: New Vegas edition before installing anything
Run the game once from its normal launcher. This creates the configuration folders and INI files that mod tools expect. Close the game after reaching the main menu.

- Keep enough disk space for the Halo archive, extracted files, and a backup of your profile.
- Close cloud-sync or overlay software temporarily if it prevents MO2 or the game from writing configuration files.
Create a dedicated Mod Organizer 2 profile
In MO2, create a profile specifically for the Halo project instead of changing the profile used for an established playthrough. A profile stores its own enabled-mod list, plugin order, and INI settings, so you can experiment without silently changing another game setup.
- Open MO2 and select the Fallout: New Vegas instance.
- Open the profile selector and choose Create new profile.
- Name it clearly, such as
FNV Halo test. - Enable profile-specific INI files if MO2 offers that option for your installation.
- Leave the profile empty until xNVSE and the stability prerequisites are ready.
Do not overwrite your existing profile or move its saves into the test profile. If the test profile fails, you should be able to switch back immediately.
Install xNVSE in the correct location
xNVSE expands the engine and scripting capabilities of Fallout: New Vegas. It is not an ordinary Data-folder mod. The official xNVSE README instructs users to copy its .dll and .exe files to the Fallout: New Vegas directory and specifically says not to copy them to Data or install them through MO2 as a normal mod.

- Download the xNVSE build appropriate for your supported edition.
- Open the archive with 7-Zip or another archive utility.
- Copy the supplied xNVSE executable and DLL files into the folder that contains
FalloutNV.exe. - Do not place those files in
Data, an MO2 mod folder, or a nested subfolder. - In MO2, open the executable drop-down, add
nvse_loader.exe, and set it as the launch target for this profile.
After applying the 4GB patch, launching FalloutNV.exe is supported according to the xNVSE documentation, but launching through nvse_loader.exe is the straightforward verification path. If the loader cannot find the game, check that both files are in the same physical directory and that MO2 points to that installation rather than another copy.

Build the stability layer before adding Halo assets
The first hour of New Vegas modding is not about adding content; it is about making the game stop crashing. Add the stability components to the Halo profile first, then launch once before installing weapons or armor.

Download the archive from the author’s listed source and install it with MO2’s archive installer. Do not drag ordinary content into the physical game root.

- In MO2, click the archive-install button and select the downloaded file.
- Inspect the archive’s top-level folders before confirming. You should be able to identify a virtual Data structure containing folders such as
meshes,textures,scripts, or plugin files. - If the archive contains an extra wrapper folder, use MO2’s file tree to select the directory that actually contains the Data contents. A mod entry whose files are buried one level too deep will appear installed but will not load.
- If a FOMOD installer appears, select only options documented by the author. Options may distinguish between standalone equipment, replacers, animation frameworks, and texture resolutions.
- Enable the finished mod in the left pane, then examine its plugins in the right pane.
Halo equipment can consist of more than a plugin. A weapon may need meshes, textures, animation files, scripts, and leveled-list records. An armor pack may additionally require body meshes, first-person arms, skeleton support, or an armor framework. A plugin that loads without its assets produces invisible objects, purple textures, or animation errors rather than a clean installation.
Determine whether the pack is a replacer or a standalone addition
This distinction controls compatibility. A standalone pack creates new item records and normally leaves vanilla equipment intact. A replacer edits or redirects existing records, meshes, or leveled lists, so another replacer touching the same resources can overwrite it.

Read the description before choosing an option. When a Halo replacer edits the same vanilla records or meshes as another replacer, treat that as a conflict even if both plugins technically load. Use an author-provided compatibility patch when one exists; do not guess at record priority.
Read requirements and compatibility notes in the right order
On the mod page, start with the Requirements tab. Then read Posts, Bugs, and the author’s compatibility section. This catches dependencies and known installation choices before they become a crash.

- Script extenders and plugins: check the required xNVSE, JIP LN, kNVSE, MCM, or other versions.
- Body and skeleton frameworks: armor may require a particular body, skeleton, or first-person setup.
- Animations: verify whether first-person, third-person, weapon-draw, reload, and power-armor animations are included or supplied by another framework.
- Leveled lists and vendors: identify whether the pack injects items into the world or requires a patch for a distribution mod.
- Replacers: note every vanilla weapon, armor record, mesh, and texture that the pack changes.
- Optional files: install texture or animation options only when you understand what they replace.
For a concrete compatibility pattern, the SALVO 2 documentation states that weapons based entirely on custom meshes, such as Another Millenia, can coexist with its weapon options, while some weapon replacers and armor replacers are mutually exclusive. The lesson applies broadly: custom standalone meshes are usually less invasive than replacers, but shared records, lists, and frameworks still need checking.
Review load order and resolve conflicts in the profile
MO2’s left pane controls file-overwrite priority; the right pane controls plugin load order. A mod can win one kind of conflict and lose another, so inspect both.
- Sort or arrange plugins using the load-order tool recommended by your setup, then review warnings rather than accepting every automatic result blindly.
- Look for two plugins that edit the same weapon, armor, leveled list, vendor list, or quest.
- Check MO2’s conflict indicators for meshes and textures. Decide which file should win based on the Halo author’s compatibility instructions.
- Place an official compatibility patch after the mods it patches, unless its documentation specifies a different order.
- Disable duplicate replacers and optional files you are not using.
- Check the active-plugin count again, including patches that were enabled by a FOMOD choice.
Do not “solve” a conflict by deleting files from another mod’s folder. Disable the conflicting mod or change the profile priority so the change remains reversible.
Verify xNVSE and test the equipment before using a real save
Verification should happen in a new game or a disposable profile, not in a character you cannot replace.

- Launch the profile from MO2 using the configured xNVSE executable.
- Open the in-game console and run
GetNVSEVersion. A reported version confirms that the script extender is active; no result indicates that the loader or installation path needs correction. - Start a new test save, or copy your existing profile and use a disposable character.
- Acquire one Halo weapon or armor item by the method documented by its author.
- Equip it in first person and third person. Check the hands, body, holster, aiming position, and camera.
- Enter combat, fire or block, reload, draw and sheathe the item, and use any supplied power-armor or animation functions.
- Travel through an interior door and an exterior cell. Cell transitions reveal missing assets and script problems that may not appear in the starting area.
- Look for missing meshes, purple textures, invisible bodies, incorrect body parts, animation errors, duplicated leveled-list entries, and crashes.
- Quit, relaunch the same profile, and repeat the test once. A problem that appears only after a second launch can indicate a script or load-order issue.
For version-sensitive dependencies, record the versions you installed. For example, the Power Armor Mod Kits page lists version 1.4.0, updated June 6, 2026, and requires xNVSE 6.4.8 or higher. Recheck that requirement when installing it or any pack that depends on it; version-specific requirements can change.
Troubleshoot crashes and visual problems without damaging your save
The game crashes before the main menu
- Confirm that xNVSE’s DLL and executable files are beside
FalloutNV.exe, not inDataor an MO2 mod folder. - Launch the same profile without the Halo mod. If the crash disappears, recheck that mod’s requirements and FOMOD choices.
- Disable other recent additions and reproduce the problem with the smallest possible profile.
- Check the edition: Steam and GOG are supported by xNVSE; Xbox Game Pass, Bethesda.net, and German No Gore are listed as unsupported, and Epic needs its specific patcher.
The item is invisible or textures are purple
- Open the MO2 file tree and confirm that the archive’s
meshesandtexturesfolders are directly under the virtual Data tree. - Remove an accidental extra wrapper folder created during archive installation.
- Check whether another mod wins the same mesh or texture conflict.
- Confirm that the required body, skeleton, or first-person asset package is enabled.
The armor clips or the weapon animates incorrectly
- Verify the required body and skeleton framework.
- Install the specified animation framework, such as kNVSE, when the author requires it.
- Test both first- and third-person views; a pack may support one while missing the other.
- Disable optional animation replacers until the base Halo item works.
The game crashes after entering combat or changing cells
- Remove the Halo mod from the test profile and confirm that the base profile remains stable.
- Review the mod’s Bugs and Posts sections for the exact symptom and required patch.
- Check for duplicate leveled-list injections, missing scripts, and a plugin count above the 139-active-plugin limit reported by the OpenMods guide.
- Use crash logs when available, but treat them as clues; reproduce with fewer enabled mods before changing several variables at once.
Roll back safely and promote the mod to a long-term load order
If the test fails, disable the Halo mod and every optional file added with it, then restore the profile that was working before the experiment. Do not continue playing a damaged test save while removing scripts or records; scripts and inventory references can persist after a plugin is disabled.
Only move the pack into a long-term profile after it passes the complete test sequence and you have identified every patch and framework it needs. Keep the original archive and a note of the installed versions. When the author updates the pack or a dependency, test the update in a copy of the profile first rather than replacing a working installation mid-playthrough.
