To add or change a custom thumbnail, open the video in YouTube Studio, choose Upload file in the Thumbnail section, select an image, and save. Your account must be verified. For a Short, YouTube’s current instructions say to upload the thumbnail in Studio on a computer; the Android Studio app supports custom thumbnails for standard videos, not Shorts. YouTube’s recommended image shape also differs: 16:9 for standard videos and 9:16 for Shorts.
Add a thumbnail to a standard video on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content from the left menu.
- Open the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, select Upload file, then choose the image on your device. You may also see Get suggestions.
- Select Save.
If you are uploading the video for the first time, the thumbnail controls are part of its video details in Studio. For a video that is already published, open it from Content and edit its thumbnail there. YouTube says a change can take time to appear, so do not assume it failed just because the old image is still visible immediately after saving.
Change a standard-video thumbnail in the Android Studio app
YouTube’s Android instructions support custom thumbnails for standard videos in the YouTube Studio app. Open Content, select the video, tap Edit, then tap Edit thumbnail. Choose Custom thumbnail and select the image from your device. You can also choose one of the automatically generated options. The Android steps are documented in YouTube Help.
What about iPhone or iPad?
The cited instructions establish a desktop workflow and an Android Studio-app workflow; they do not establish an equivalent custom-thumbnail workflow in the iOS app. If you do not see the custom option on your device, use YouTube Studio on a computer rather than relying on an unverified mobile-app path.

Add or change a thumbnail for a Short
Use YouTube Studio on a computer:
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the Shorts tab and select the Short.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file and select your image.
- Select Save.
YouTube’s current desktop guidance describes this Studio-on-computer workflow. Its Android guidance says custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added on a computer, even though the app can edit thumbnails for standard videos. Changes may take time to show.
Choose the right image dimensions and file size
YouTube gives different recommendations for standard videos and Shorts. The values below are the current recommendations and limits stated on its Help page; that page does not give a publication year for them.

The mobile 2 MB limit is specifically listed for video thumbnails; the cited page lists a 50 MB desktop limit for video thumbnails and Shorts. If Studio rejects the file, check the format and size as well as the dimensions. Resizing or exporting a lighter JPG can help when an image exceeds the applicable limit, but keep enough detail for text and faces to remain legible at small display sizes.

Vertical video display caveat
A 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video may be replaced with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. YouTube says the custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. If the vertical-video preview on one of those surfaces matters, do not assume that the image uploaded in Studio will be shown identically everywhere.

YouTube’s Help page also lists a 10 MB mobile limit for podcast thumbnails and recommends a 1:1 shape for podcast playlists. Those are podcast-specific details, not the standard-video or Shorts settings in the table.
Prepare an image that works at thumbnail size
The upload controls determine whether YouTube accepts the file; they do not guarantee that a viewer can understand it at a glance. Before uploading, check the image at a small size similar to how it will appear in a feed. Make the main subject easy to distinguish, keep any wording brief, and leave breathing room around important details so they are not lost when the image is scaled or cropped. Preview it against the intended video: a thumbnail should accurately represent that video rather than imply content it does not contain.

You can create or edit the image in an editor of your choice and export it as JPG or PNG within the relevant dimensions and upload-size limit. YouTube does not require a particular design app in the cited instructions. Its Studio interface may also offer Get suggestions; YouTube separately documents an Ask Studio workflow that can suggest thumbnail concepts based on a video’s transcript and themes. You can prompt it for a concept, provide the video or reference images, ask for revisions, and review the suggestions. Treat suggestions as a starting point: inspect the result and make sure it accurately reflects the video.
Use YouTube’s thumbnail comparison feature when eligible
YouTube documents Test & compare thumbnails in Studio on a computer. Its feature page describes comparing up to three thumbnails and says the feature requires advanced features. It supports public long-form videos and podcast episodes; private videos, made-for-kids videos, and mature-audience videos are excluded. Eligibility and interface details can change, so check the current YouTube Help instructions in Studio before planning a test.

Prepare your alternatives at comparable quality and inspect how they look at the size viewers will encounter. A comparison is useful only when the images differ in a deliberate way; changing many unrelated design elements at once can make it harder to understand what viewers preferred.

Fix common upload and display problems
The custom-thumbnail option is missing
Check that the account is verified; YouTube requires verification for custom thumbnails. If you are editing a Short in the Android app, switch to YouTube Studio on a computer. For a standard video on Android, use the Studio app’s Content → video → Edit → Edit thumbnail path.
Studio rejects the image
Confirm you selected the correct file and that it meets YouTube’s listed format and upload-size limit for the device and video type. Use JPG or PNG for standard-video thumbnails, and check the separate Shorts dimensions and minimum height. If uploading from mobile, account for the listed 2 MB video-thumbnail limit rather than the desktop limit.
The image saved, but viewers still see the old one
YouTube says thumbnail changes may take time to appear. Allow time for the change to propagate, then check again. Also consider where the video is being viewed: for vertical videos, the 16:9 custom image may be replaced by an automatic 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and subscription pages.
“Daily custom thumbnail limit reached” appears
YouTube says the daily limit can vary by country or region and channel history. If you see this error, its guidance is to try again in 24 hours. Copyright and Community Guidelines strikes can affect eligibility or limits.
The thumbnail is rejected or custom thumbnails are unavailable
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. The Help page names nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as grounds for rejection or a strike. Repeated violations may lead to loss of custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or account termination. YouTube may also turn off custom thumbnails for certain search results when it considers them inappropriate for viewers. Review the image and the applicable official guidance before trying again.
