You can install custom maps in Celeste on a Windows, macOS, or Linux PC by installing Olympus, using it to install the Everest mod loader, and then adding maps from GameBanana. The safe route is to use Olympus’s 1-click installer and leave each downloaded map as a .zip file. This works with legitimate Steam, Epic Games, and itch.io PC copies; it does not work with the Nintendo Switch or Microsoft / Xbox Store versions.
What do you need before installing Celeste mods?
You need a moddable PC copy of Celeste, the Olympus installer and mod manager, and Everest, the loader that lets Celeste read mods. Olympus and Everest are free; a legitimate PC copy of the game is the paid prerequisite. Custom maps are also generally free.
- A supported game copy: Steam, Epic Games, or itch.io for PC. Launch the game once before installing Everest, and make sure Celeste is version 1.4.0.0. The EverestAPI install-issues page still presented 1.4.0.0 as the current required Celeste version when accessed on October 29, 2026.
- Permission to write to the game folder: Everest needs access to the Celeste installation. Close the game before installing or updating it.
- Olympus: Get it from the official Everest site. The Windows Olympus installer is also listed on GameBanana tool 6449. On Linux and macOS, follow the platform-specific instructions on the Everest site rather than using the Windows installer.
- Everest: Install it through Olympus. Installing Olympus alone does not enable custom maps; Everest must also be installed.
Do not try this with a Switch copy, a Microsoft / Xbox Store UWP copy, or a pirated build. Everest’s FAQ says Steam, Epic Games, and itch.io PC versions can be modded, while the Microsoft / Xbox Store version cannot. It also answers the Switch question with “No.” The UWP version is locked down like the Xbox version, and the Celeste developers and modding community cannot change that. Pirated copies are unsupported because their prior modifications are unknown.
How do you install Olympus and Everest?
Install Olympus first, register your Celeste installation in it, and then install Everest from Olympus. For ordinary play, select Everest’s stable branch; beta and dev builds are intended for people testing or developing newer features.

Install Olympus on Windows
- Download Olympus from the official Everest site or the GameBanana tool page linked above. Avoid third-party download mirrors.
- Run the installer. If Windows SmartScreen warns about it, verify that you downloaded the genuine file from one of those official locations before choosing to run it.
- If antivirus software blocks the installer, do not treat the warning as proof either that the file is malicious or that it is safe. Olympus modifies Celeste.exe to install Everest; the project is open source. If the download looks spoofed or came from an unfamiliar host, delete it and download a fresh copy from the official source instead.
The Everest site explains that Olympus can update itself and injects Everest code into Celeste.exe, and that both projects are open source. The GameBanana tool page also warns that a system may falsely flag the patcher because it modifies the executable. There is no published malware-incident count or independent antivirus-lab certification established for Olympus or Celeste mods, so the practical safeguard is to use the official hosts and verify the download source.
Install Olympus on macOS
- Download the latest Olympus autobuild from the Everest site and open the downloaded archive. If it contains another zip, extract the inner zip as well.
- Move Olympus to the Applications folder. Leaving it in Downloads can interfere with self-updating.
- If macOS blocks the unverified app, open System Settings, choose Privacy & Security, and use Open Anyway for Olympus.
Install Olympus on Linux or Steam Deck
- Use the Linux instructions on the Everest site to download the autobuild, unpack the nested zip if present, and run
install.shin a terminal. - Launch Olympus. The bundled LÖVE runtime may require FUSE 2. Do not blindly install a FUSE package without checking what your distribution needs. Arch users may encounter an unofficial AUR package, and a Flathub package is listed as
io.github.everestapi.Olympus. - On Steam Deck, follow the Everest site’s Linux instructions; the Deck uses the Linux workflow.
Register Celeste and install Everest
- Open Olympus and choose Manage, then add your Celeste installation. On Steam, use Manage > Browse local files to locate it. On macOS Steam, use Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources.
- Return to the main Olympus screen and select the Everest installation button. Choose a branch and use Install/Update.
- Choose stable for playing maps unless a map specifically requires a newer compatible version. Beta is for developing or testing new features; dev changes very frequently.
Everest versions 4465 and later run on .NET Core; versions 4449 and earlier are legacy, according to the EverestAPI FAQ accessed October 29, 2026. If you have not played in a while, update Everest to a compatible current build. The FAQ says the 4GB memory limit is no longer present on 64-bit Windows core-branch installs, so Celeste can use system RAM beyond that old limit. It also reports that load times have been reduced by up to half on .NET Core, while noting that first launches can take longer as the relinker cache rebuilds. Those are Everest’s published claims, not a guarantee that every setup or map will load at the same speed.
If Olympus displays a red exclamation mark on Options, update Olympus first. If Olympus cannot complete its Everest installation, there is a manual install path: download the stable artifact linked on the official site (observed there as stable-1.6642.0 on October 29, 2026), place the contents of main.zip so Celeste.Mod.mm.dll sits beside Celeste.exe, then run the platform-appropriate MiniInstaller: MiniInstaller-win64.exe, MiniInstaller-win.exe, MiniInstaller-linux, or MiniInstaller-osx. Use this only as a fallback; Olympus is the simpler way to manage installs and updates.
How do you install a custom Celeste map?
Find a map on GameBanana or in Olympus’s mod browser, then use the page’s Olympus 1-click installer. If that option is unavailable, keep the map as a zip and put it in the Mods folder beside Celeste, or drag the zip onto Olympus.

- Open a map page on GameBanana or browse available mods through Olympus. Prefer a map page that displays the Olympus 1-click button.
- Select the 1-click option and let Olympus download and verify the map archive. The button usually appears around 5–10 minutes after an upload, once the community update checker has accepted the zip. A missing button on a new upload can mean it has not passed the structure checks yet.
- Leave the download as a
.zip. If 1-click is not available, place the zip in theModsdirectory next to the game, or drag it onto Olympus. - Start Celeste through Everest in Olympus. If the map needs helper mods, open Mod Options and choose the option to install missing dependencies.
Everest reads mod zip files directly. The Everest site’s instruction is: “That’s it. No need to extract anything.” Olympus’s 1-click installer also verifies the zip, and Everest can hash-check installed zips against its mod update database, with a Banana Mirror fallback if GameBanana is unavailable.
Should you unzip Celeste mods?
No. Keep player downloads zipped. Everest reads zip files as-is, and extracting them can make the operating system handle hundreds of separate files instead of one archive. The Everest common-crashes guidance says this is preferable and warns that unpacked mods can trigger System.IO.IOException: Too Many Open Files.
Some browsers or systems automatically unzip downloads. If that happens, remove the unpacked copy and download or restore the archive so the file in Mods ends in .zip. Do not keep a zip and an extracted folder for the same mod together: duplicate assets can conflict. A folder-based mod is for a developer’s own prototyping, not the normal player installation.

- Use official hosts: Get Olympus from the Everest site or GameBanana tool 6449. For maps, use GameBanana or Olympus’s browser. Treat random “free Celeste mods” sites and unfamiliar mirrors as untrusted.
- Keep the game legitimate and current: Use a supported PC storefront copy and Celeste 1.4.0.0. Do not attempt to make an unsupported UWP, Switch, or pirated copy work.
- Back up saves: Copy the
Savesfolder before installing. On Windows it is[game_location]Saves; on macOS it is$HOME/Library/Application Support/Celeste/Saves; on Linux it is$XDG_DATA_HOME/Celeste/Saves, normally~/.local/share/Celeste/Saves. - Close Celeste during changes: A running game can keep installation files locked. Cloud-sync services such as OneDrive or Google Drive Desktop can also lock files; pause syncing if an install or update reports that a file is in use.
- Avoid overwriting vanilla content: Everest merges assets, but it does not track which mod supplied a colliding asset. Overwriting vanilla textures, maps, or dialog can make conflicts hard to diagnose.
- Keep mods updated with Everest: Old helper mods can crash against newer Everest versions. Use Olympus’s Update All to bring installed mods up to date when updating Everest.
Custom maps should use unique paths such as Maps/yournickname/campaignname/map.bin so one map does not clobber another at the same path. For map makers, Everest’s mod-structure documentation says optional dependencies in everest.yaml were added in Everest 2002. Players can install missing helpers from Mod Options; map creators should declare helpers in their metadata rather than requiring another full map and its dependency tree where possible.
How do you install Strawberry Jam or another large map collection?
Install a large collab the same way as another map: use its GameBanana 1-click button or Olympus browser, keep its archive zipped, and install missing helpers from Mod Options. A large collab can require more memory and take longer to load than a small starter map.
If you want a smaller first project, Everest’s useful-links page points players to Chelito’s List of Starter Maps (GameBanana collection 98635), Celeste Mods List, and Parrot Dash’s “Where to Start” video. Those are community discovery resources rather than separate installation methods; use the same zip-and-Everest process for any map you choose.
How do you troubleshoot a map that will not load?
Start with the exact error and fix the relevant cause instead of reinstalling everything. Many failures come from an outdated game or helper, a damaged archive, or a locked file.

| MonoModRules or XNA error | Celeste has not completed a vanilla launch before Everest setup. | Launch vanilla Celeste once, close it, and retry Everest. |
| File in use or installer cannot write | Celeste is still open, or a sync service has locked a file. | Close Celeste. Pause OneDrive or Google Drive Desktop syncing temporarily, then retry. |
| Unsupported game version | The game is not at version 1.4.0.0, or the copy is unsupported. | Update a legitimate Steam, Epic, or itch.io PC copy. Pirated copies are not supported. |
Ionic.Zip.BadCrcException or “End of Central Directory” |
The mod zip is corrupt or incomplete. | Delete that archive from Mods and redownload it through 1-click. |
| “Unexpected MonoMod patcher” | Olympus is outdated. | Update Olympus, then retry the Everest operation. |
| OutOfMemory | Too many or memory-intensive mods are enabled. | Disable unused maps in Mod Options or Olympus under Manage Installed Mods. You can also use Mods/blacklist.txt. Large collabs can be memory-intensive; adding cleanup software is not the fix. |
| Missing helper or dependency | A map requires another mod that is not installed. | Open Mod Options and use Install missing dependencies. |

A Linux crash involving vanilla libfmodstudio.so.10 was fixed by a Celeste update pushed on February 7, 2025, according to the Everest common-crashes page. If the specific crash persists, check that the base game is updated before treating it as a map problem. For unresolved mod issues, the Everest guidance points players to the Celeste Discord’s #modding_help channel and an Olympus log-sharp log.
How do you play a map you made in Lönn?
Install Lönn through Olympus or its GitHub releases, point it to your Celeste installation, and create a new map rather than editing the vanilla Summit. Each playable room needs a Player Spawn Point; save the map inside a mod folder and launch Celeste through Everest to find it.
- Install Lönn through Olympus if available, or use the Lönn GitHub release. Point it at
Celeste.exe, or atCeleste.dllfor a .NET Core installation. - When Lönn opens the vanilla Summit map, choose File > New. The Everest tutorial explicitly warns not to edit the vanilla Summit.
- Create a Player Spawn Point in every room the player can enter. Save the map at
Mods/YourMod/Maps/YourName/YourMod/YourMap.bin, beside the mod’severest.yaml. - Launch Everest and use the DEBUG save to locate the custom map in chapter select. Set display names in
Dialog/English.txt. - For a quick one-off test, a bare
.bincan be dropped intoMods; it appears as Uncategorized. Use the full mod structure before sharing the map.
When packaging a mod for other players, the archive should be a .zip with everest.yaml visible at the archive root—not a nested extra folder or a different archive format. That is a creator’s packaging rule; players should still leave the received zip unopened. Do not leave both a zipped and folder copy of your mod installed, because their assets may conflict.

How should you choose a safe map download?
A visible Olympus 1-click button is a useful practical filter: it appears after the community update checker accepts the uploaded zip, typically within 5–10 minutes. It does not establish a malware certification, so still check that the page is on GameBanana and that Olympus itself came from the official Everest site or tool page.

Finished maps are commonly hosted on GameBanana. Work-in-progress maps may also be shared in the Celeste Discord’s #modding_showcase and #modding_wip channels, as the Everest FAQ notes. WIP builds and random mirror links are different from a verified 1-click download; for the safest first installation, choose a map with the button and let Olympus handle the archive.
How was this installation path selected?
The recommended path follows Everest’s documented player workflow: Olympus manages the installation, installs and updates Everest, and verifies map zips delivered through its 1-click integration. The alternatives—manual installer use, dragging a zip to Olympus, or placing it in Mods—are fallbacks for cases where the 1-click option is unavailable or Olympus cannot install Everest. Extracted folders are not recommended for player installs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a custom map if I do not want to install a large collab?
Yes. Choose a standalone starter map from a community map list rather than a large collaboration. The Everest useful-links page identifies Chelito’s List of Starter Maps, collection 98635, as one place to begin.
Why does Celeste show my test map as Uncategorized?
A bare .bin placed directly in Mods is suitable for a quick one-off test but has no full mod metadata or structure for the game to use as a named campaign. Add it to a properly structured mod with everest.yaml and dialog entries before sharing it.
What should I send when asking for help with a Celeste mod crash?
The Everest troubleshooting guidance directs unresolved players to the Celeste Discord’s #modding_help channel and an Olympus log-sharp log. Include the exact error text and identify the map or helper involved so others can narrow down the failure.
