To add custom alerts to a YouTube live stream, set up subscriber, member, or Super Chat alerts with a provider such as Streamlabs or StreamElements, then add its widget or overlay to your streaming software. In OBS Studio, you typically add the alert as a Browser Source. Test it and confirm it is visible in the scene you plan to use before going live.
How YouTube live alerts work
The alert’s design and behavior are configured with an alert provider. The provider’s widget or overlay then displays those alerts in your broadcast scene. YouTube-specific setup matters: available alert events depend on the selected platform and provider configuration. Streamlabs’ YouTube Alert Box guide covers subscriber, member, and Super Chat alerts.
OBS describes third-party alert overlays as Browser Sources. You do not need a webcam, microphone, green screen, or controller just to add an alert overlay.
Add Streamlabs alerts to OBS
- Choose YouTube in Streamlabs. Sign in and select YouTube as the platform or account context, then open Alert Box. The available event types and controls can depend on the selected platform and account.
- Customize the event alerts. Set the appearance and behavior for the alert types you want. Depending on the event and provider settings, customization may include message templates or text-to-speech. Check the controls shown for each event rather than assuming every option applies to all alert types.
- Add the alert to your broadcast software. In Streamlabs Desktop, add the Alert Box widget from Sources. In OBS Studio without the Streamlabs plugin, copy the widget URL and add it as a Browser Source. Other compatible programs can also use the widget URL.
- Test and check the scene. Use Streamlabs’ test function before going live. Confirm the alert appears, is legible, and is not hidden or cropped in the intended scene. If you use more than one scene, check the scenes where you expect alerts to appear.
Set up alerts with StreamElements
- Open the Elements or Overlay editor. Create an alert box using an existing element or a custom alert box.
- Customize the overlay. Choose the visual assets and dynamic text to suit your stream. The exact controls depend on the elements and configuration you use.
- Add the overlay to OBS. Copy the widget URL supplied by StreamElements and follow its instructions to add the overlay to OBS.
- Test it in the intended scene. Check that the overlay renders in the broadcast composition before you start streaming.
Which alert provider should you use?
Neither provider is universally the best choice. Both workflows configure alerts with a provider and display them in the broadcast software. Choose based on the event types and customization you need, how you prefer to add the widget, and whether you already use one of the services.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube events | Confirm the events you want are available in the provider’s YouTube configuration. Streamlabs’ YouTube guide lists subscriber, member, and Super Chat alerts. |
| Adding the alert | Streamlabs offers an Alert Box widget in Streamlabs Desktop and a widget-URL Browser Source path for OBS and compatible software. StreamElements provides an overlay widget URL and OBS instructions. |
| Customization | Check the available controls for alert text, visual assets, sound, animation, and any provider-specific features you want. Options vary by provider and event. |
| Familiarity | If you already use one provider, its existing overlay workflow may be simpler to manage than setting up another service. |
Fix alerts that do not appear
- Check the source or overlay: make sure you added the correct provider’s widget or overlay URL.
- Check the active scene: verify the Browser Source is present in the scene currently being broadcast and is visible rather than hidden or covered.
- Run the provider’s test: if the test alert does not appear, recheck the widget setup and scene placement before going live.
- Check the final composition: confirm the alert is not positioned off-screen, obscured, or cropped.
These checks follow the documented integration steps; they do not explain every possible account, event-delay, permission, or YouTube API issue.
Or let it run in the cloud
Custom alerts are added through your alert provider and streaming software. If you also want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
