To caption a prerecorded sermon in a continuous YouTube livestream, send captions to the live broadcast while the sermon plays. YouTube supports two routes: embed EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data in the outgoing video, or send a synchronized caption feed to YouTube’s signed caption-ingestion URL using compatible software. Uploading an SRT or other caption file to a regular YouTube video does not add captions to a separate livestream.
Choose how captions will reach the livestream
First confirm that your encoder or captioning software can play the sermon’s existing caption file in time with the prerecorded audio. YouTube documents the live caption transports, but does not provide a universal procedure for importing and synchronizing a sidecar file in every encoder or caption application. Check the specific product’s file-import, time-base, restart, and synchronization behavior with its vendor.
Option 1: Embed EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the video
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and select Embedded 608/708 for captions.
- Configure the encoder to output EIA-608 or CEA-708 caption data along with the sermon video.
- If you are using a caption file, verify that the encoder supports that exact file format and can embed it in sync during playback. YouTube says whether an encoder can read captions from a specific file depends on the setup.
YouTube’s live caption guidance says it currently supports one embedded 608/708 caption track. YouTube’s live caption requirements explain this route and its setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Option 2: Send captions over HTTP
- Turn on captions in the YouTube stream setup and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Enter that URL in compatible captioning software that can send the sermon’s timed captions while the video is streamed by your encoder.
- Set a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, as YouTube’s event instructions require for this route.
- Use no more than one caption feed for each stream entry point.
The caption feed and sermon audio must stay synchronized throughout playback, including after a sermon transition or loop restart. YouTube identifies software that sends captions over HTTP POST as a supported method, but compatibility with a particular prerecorded sidecar file must be confirmed with the software vendor.

Do not confuse a video caption upload with live captions
YouTube accepts caption files such as SubRip (.srt) and SubViewer (.sbv/.sub) for caption tracks on uploaded videos. That upload workflow creates captions for that video; it does not send captions to a separate continuous livestream. For the broadcast, captions must reach the live stream through embedded 608/708 data or the supported HTTP caption route. See YouTube’s supported subtitle and closed caption files.
Set up the continuous stream and test it
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the event viewers watch—from a stream, the audiovisual feed sent by an encoder. The Live Streaming API allows a stream to be bound to up to three broadcasts; Google also describes a continuous feed that remains active while a separate broadcast is started for part of that feed. Neither arrangement changes the requirement to deliver captions through a live caption route. Details are in Google’s guide to broadcasts and streams.

- In Live Control Room, get the server URL and stream key, then connect your encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Before making the stream public, run an unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor audio and video as YouTube recommends in its live-streaming tips.
- Check caption appearance and timing at the beginning, after every sermon change, and after a playlist or loop restart. Confirm that captions remain synchronized with the spoken words.
- For HTTP delivery, verify that the configured delay is present and that the caption feed reaches the intended stream entry point.
Latency and software compatibility
The YouTube Live Streaming API identifies the relevant caption modes as closedCaptionsEmbedded and closedCaptionsHttpPost, and states that ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Do not choose ultra-low latency for a stream that needs captions. See the LiveBroadcasts API documentation.
YouTube’s live-caption page lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or greater), Case CATalyst (BCS version 14.52 or greater), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net. The listings do not establish that each product imports and synchronizes a prerecorded sermon caption file. Ask the vendor about that exact use case before building the workflow around it.

Troubleshooting caption problems
- No captions appear: Check that captions are enabled in Live Control Room and that the encoder is outputting embedded 608/708 data, or that compatible software is sending to the correct signed HTTP ingestion URL.
- Captions appear on the uploaded sermon but not the live stream: The uploaded video’s caption track is separate from live caption delivery. Configure one of the live routes described above.
- Captions are out of sync: Confirm the caption software and encoder use the same playback timeline and compatible time-base. Test the file import and synchronization with the vendor; YouTube’s general instructions do not specify a universal sidecar-file method.
- Captions drift or disappear after a sermon changes or loops: Test transitions and restarts in an unlisted stream. Confirm that the caption timeline restarts or advances as intended with the video.
- HTTP captions fail or arrive late: Check the signed ingestion URL, the caption application’s connection, the 30- or 60-second delay, and the one-feed-per-entry-point limit.
- Captions fail with ultra-low latency: Use a latency mode that supports captions; YouTube’s API documentation says ultra-low latency does not.
