To add captions to a live stream, provide a caption track through a route your streaming platform supports, then verify it on the actual viewer-side player before the event. A viewer’s captions button can display an available track; it cannot create one. YouTube supports automatic captions in some streams and creator-supplied captions through embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 encoding or supported caption-ingestion software. Twitch supports streamer-provided captions through routes including its Closed Captioning OBS Plugin.
Automatic captions are convenient, but speech recognition can fail. For events where transcription errors would matter, consider a professional live captioner or CART provider. Captions can make synchronized audio accessible to people who cannot hear it; greater reach is a possible benefit, but the cited guidance does not establish a quantified increase in views or engagement.
Choose how captions will be generated and delivered
Caption generation and caption delivery are separate jobs. Captions may be generated automatically by a platform, encoded into the video by an encoder, or produced by software or a human captioner and sent to the platform. The route must be supported by both the destination and your streaming setup.

W3C explains that live captions address access to synchronized audio for people who cannot hear it, and notes that professional real-time captioners and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) providers are common ways to caption live content. How to add captions to a YouTube live stream
YouTube’s documented creator-supplied routes are embedded captions and supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP POSTs. The available setup depends on your encoder or software; check YouTube’s Live caption requirements and verify the current event labels before configuring a production stream.
Option 1: Send embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
- Create or open the YouTube Live event in the streaming setup.
- Open Settings > Setup, enable Closed captions, and choose Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder to send captions encoded as EIA-608/CEA-708. YouTube says the underlying standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one track through this embedded route.
- Before the event, confirm the encoder can send the selected caption format and that the captions appear in the YouTube player.
Option 2: Send captions through supported software
- In the event’s settings, enable Closed captions and copy the Captions Ingestion URL.
- Configure supported caption software to send captions to that URL. Confirm the software’s current requirements and compatibility with your event before relying on it.
- Set a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay in the event’s advanced settings, as YouTube’s documented ingestion workflow calls for. Verify the exact controls in your current live setup.
- Run a rehearsal and check that captions arrive at the destination player in sync with the audio.
Option 3: Use YouTube automatic captions when available
YouTube says speech recognition can generate live captions, but it is not guaranteed. Poor sound quality or speech the system cannot recognize can prevent captions from appearing. YouTube also lists latency-related limitations, including low- and ultra-low-latency streams such as mobile live streams. Review YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance for current limitations. Do not assume that enabling a viewer’s captions preference will create captions or that automatic captions replace a creator-supplied delivery route when one is needed.

How to add closed captions on Twitch
Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions explains that streamers can provide real-time captions, including through the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin. Captions are not present on every stream by default.
- Choose a streamer-side caption route supported by your setup, such as the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin.
- Configure the current plugin and streaming setup according to Twitch’s instructions, and confirm that it matches your channel’s encoder and stream configuration.
- Rehearse on the destination stream and check that the captions appear in the player.
- Ask a viewer or test account to confirm the CC control is available when captions are sent. Twitch viewers can toggle available captions and adjust their appearance in the video player.
Test captions before the event
A caption feature can appear enabled in a setup screen yet fail at the viewer’s end. Use a private or unlisted rehearsal where possible, and verify the complete path from microphone to destination player.

- Confirm the intended microphone is the audio source and speech is clear. YouTube identifies poor sound as one reason automatic captions may fail.
- Check the actual destination player, not just the encoder preview or caption software.
- Test speaker changes, names, and other terms that matter to your event. Correct any caption errors that your workflow lets you edit.
- Check timing against the audio and confirm the captions remain readable without covering essential on-screen information.
- Test viewer controls and appearance where the platform provides them.
- If the event is consequential, assess whether a professional captioner or CART provider is more appropriate than relying on speech recognition alone.
A microphone may help capture speech clearly, but it does not create captions. YouTube’s guidance supports the importance of sound quality; it does not establish that any particular microphone improves recognition.
Facebook Live: verify current support before planning a workflow
A Meta post from June 2017 discussed Facebook Live closed captions and speech recognition for non-live Page videos. That historical information does not establish Facebook Live’s current interface, integrations, or delivery steps. Do not rely on an old menu path: check current official Facebook documentation and test your chosen caption route on the destination before announcing an event.
