To add automated captions to a YouTube live stream, open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, choose Stream, and turn on Closed captions. Choose Automatic captions and the video language. The setting is per stream, and YouTube’s documented live automatic-caption option is English-only, available only to channels that have received the feature rollout, and supported at normal latency.
Turn on automatic captions for a live stream

In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.

In the left menu, select Stream.

In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.

Select Automatic captions as the caption source, then select the video language.
YouTube Help says automatic captions can be turned on for individual live streams, not for an entire channel. The option may not appear on every channel because YouTube describes its rollout as ongoing. Its documented live automatic-caption support is English-only; check the available controls in your Studio account because features and labels can change. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning.
Check the stream conditions before going live
Live automatic captions require normal latency. YouTube lists low and ultra-low latency as unsupported, including some mobile streams. If captions are missing, check these conditions first:

Language: Match the selected video language to the spoken language. YouTube lists unsupported languages and multiple languages spoken at once as possible problems.

Latency: Use normal latency rather than low or ultra-low latency.

Speech clarity: Make speech audible and reduce overlapping speakers where possible. Poor audio or speech the system does not recognize can prevent captions from appearing or affect their accuracy.
These checks improve the chance that captions will appear, but no setting or audio device guarantees accurate speech recognition. YouTube recommends reviewing automatically generated captions because recognition can make errors. See YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.

Rehearse and monitor the stream
Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitor stream health. A short private or unlisted rehearsal is a practical way to check that the caption control is enabled and captions appear under your actual conditions. If YouTube’s built-in option is unavailable or unsuitable, YouTube documents two routes for supplying captions from outside its automatic-caption feature. Both involve more setup than switching on automatic captions.

Embedded captions from an encoder
Configure the stream to carry embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, then select embedded captions in the encoder. The standard allows up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one embedded caption track. This route is most relevant if your encoder and caption workflow already support embedded captions.
Captions from supported software and an ingestion URL
YouTube also describes a workflow using supported caption software and a caption ingestion URL. Its requirements page says this workflow requires adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in advanced settings. Consult YouTube’s live caption requirements for the applicable setup details.
What happens to captions on the replay?
Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. YouTube generates captions for the video-on-demand (VOD) replay separately, and those captions may differ from the live captions. Check the replay after processing and review or correct the captions available there. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning.
